The BMW i5 is the inaugural version of the 5-series luxury vehicle that operates solely on electric power, despite the fact that the model has been available for purchase for many years. Like its gasoline-powered equivalent, the 2025 i5 offers a comfortable journey with a touch of BMW's distinctive nimbleness; the sole distinction being that it operates silently. The release of the electric M5 super car is still in the distant future, but the M60 xDrive, equipped with two motors, offers a comparable performance with 590 horsepower and an estimated acceleration time of 3.3 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour. The 335-horsepower eDrive40 and 389-horsepower xDrive40 variants of the i5 offer extended range, however they are not as speedy. The eDrive40 model with rear-wheel drive offers the highest range among all the options, reaching 295 miles per charge. The i5's digital dashboard extends across the front of the driver and passengers, including customisable gauges and BMW's iDrive 8.5 infotainment system, which illuminates them. Among the electric luxury cars that rival the i5, notable contenders are the technologically advanced Mercedes-Benz EQE, the performance-oriented Porsche Taycan, and the luxurious Genesis Electrified G80. The i5, like to its rivals, integrates ecological sustainability with abundant opulence. The current absence of a trim level capable of rivalling the gas-powered M5 is the only deficiency at present.The projected price range for the 2025 BMW i5 is between $68,000 and $86,000, with the possibility of exceeding this range depending on the chosen trim level and optional features.In comparison to the performance-focused M60 variant, the eDrive40 has a marginally extended range, making it a more suitable option for those aiming to optimise their battery longevity. Nevertheless, as automotive enthusiasts, we would voluntarily sacrifice a portion of the vehicle's driving distance in order to obtain enhanced performance and superior manoeuvrability when navigating turns.The eDrive40, which is the entry-level variant of the i5 with three engines, boasts a robust 335 horsepower and relies on a solitary electric motor to drive the rear wheels. By including an additional electric motor, the xDrive40 variant attains a combined power output of 389 horsepower, rendering it highly suitable for all-wheel drive scenarios. The M60 xDrive model is enhanced with a second electric motor positioned on the front axle, resulting in a higher power output of 590 horsepower. During our initial test drive of the prototype, we were greatly impressed by the i5 M60's agile manoeuvrability, reassuring grip while cornering, and robust twin-motor drivetrain. During our visit to Portugal to test drive production automobiles, we were able to validate our initial observations regarding the i5's handling and experience its comfortable ride even on the uneven roads commonly found in the area. The M60 achieves a greater sense of cohesion and athleticism through the implementation of active anti-roll bars, a more aggressive suspension setup, increased tyre size and rear-wheel steering.
