  • Does your vehicle have a 4-Flat trailer wiring harness, but you need to tow a trailer with a 7-Way harness? In this video we go over how easy and fast it is to convert a 4-Flat harness to a 7-Way harness using U-Haul part# 47185. This conversion will work for the taillight functions, but trailer brakes are not connected.

    Why would you just do the lights if you had a 7-pin connector? I have a Telluride with a 4-pin connector but a 7-pin harness. I need the brake function (and reverse) so I can hook it up properly to a tear-drop camputer.

    Blue wire is for the brake controller output to the trailer brakes. The black wire is a 12V B+.... DO NOT wire this to your trailer brake wire. You will destroy your trailer brakes. I realize this is a vehicle only application specific video, but it helps to tell people.
    Some of your customers tow trailers with batteries which charge off the center pin such as horse trailers, equipment trailers, RVs, Boat trailers, etc.
    The other thing I often do is install a relay so that wire is only powered key on and not key off. Otherwise you will have a dead battery if you don’t unplug your trailer connection and wonder why. (That is an expensive road call 25 miles out in the woods on logging roads if you’re hunting)
    U-Haul has standardized wiring it seems, but not everyone has. Wire by function and test if you are a DIYer. It will save you money. Not that I don’t enjoy your business, but sometimes my paycheck comes from your ruined vacation!
    Other than that, great job!

      You would run the black wire! Just make sure you put the appropriate fuse in place on that wire using a fuse holder when attaching to the battery.

    did you cut the white wire from the four way and then attach to grounding under vehicle. I cant tell if there is 3 or 4 wires still running to the 4 way connect?

    • @aaronlimon4803
      @aaronlimon4803 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The white wire is sperate from the 4 flat on the 7-way. It uses a larger gauge wire so we ground it to the frame. The white wire on the vehicle end's 4-flat is usually a smaller gauge and hooking up different sizes of wire can cause issues down the road.

  • @aaronlimon4803
    @aaronlimon4803 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Hey guys! After reading some comments I'd like to clarify some things. This conversion is for lights only. The trailer the customer owned did not have trailer brakes or need a charge line which is why we did not use those wires. If your trailer has trailer brakes you need to run the blue wire to the brake controller to hook up. If you need power, run the black wire to the battery and connect with a fuse holder and an appropriate fuse. The route to the engine compartment or firewall for those wires are different on every vehicle, but generally you want to follow the brake lines underneath the vehicle. For the purple wire, you just need to connect to the reverse light wire on the taillight. We see how important this is and will have a video out on how to hook those up soon.

  • @rhess10

    So you changed out the plug to tow a big trailer but you cut the brake wire.what would be the point of this? If you're going to tow a trailer you wanted to have brakes.
    And if you have a tiny trailer with a four-pin connector you don't need the brakes.

    • @trailerhitches
      @trailerhitches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are trailers that have a 7-Way plug with no brakes, so no need for the electric brake wire. For a full 7-Way conversion you should see our video for that th-cam.com/video/hqze3Qgz-Ng/w-d-xo.html
