  • A selection of photo's and video's covering the rebuild of my 1980 MC440 Maico. Completely restored by myself except for cylinder boring, crank pressing and wheel lacing. Built from a good rolling chassis and the ashes of eBay. Motor has GS transmission, Motoplat ignition, new rod, all new bearings/seals and is on its 2nd oversize piston. Front brake drum has new cast iron liner fitted, machined for 0.008" interference fit. Starts 4 or 5th kick with choke and decomp when cold even if its been months, once its warm one kick is enough. Just got to get it dirty now.

Rode a couple of those ,greak bikes,a little swifter shifter in the gearbox, helped a ton with the notchy shifting.handled great, pulled like John deere tractors. Jumped extremely well, turned, soso, tall bike! That,is a work of art, hoping one day to find one to restore myself.great job on that one

I was 15 riding my Yamaha TY175 around the local sandpit where I lived and the two blokes where running in there brand new440 Maico and after a while they stopped so I pulled up to talk to them and look at there bikes. They where running them in for the weekend Irish championship and using Putoline oil. Superb bikes, they asked how often I would ride as I new where to go and I explained I would strap a Gallon GTX Castrol can with petrol mix 20-1 and ride until near empty three times a week and go home. Little did I know I would race for 25 years Ireland Wales England and some races in Belgium. I could never get over the size off the rear hub on the Maico but alas never raced one only Yamaha Honda Kawasaki and KTM but always loved the 440 Maico.

Wow! Beautiful. Got roosted by one at Hangtown when i was 12.. coolest thing ever lol... hurt like hell too lol. He rode by me doing a wheelie crossup with long hair flowing from his helmet.. so late 70s 80... and so freakin cool! At the time that was the baddest bike around.

One of my best friends had the same bike in the early 80s it was a very fast & gorgeous bike. Only problem he couldn't find parts in those pre Internet days.

Beautiful piece of mx history... raced with a couple of the beasts in Nebraska City a couple of years ago...not sure how they ended up in the evolution class (I think they combined classes)
