Morocco's Unlikely Movie Capital, Quarzazate M A

It may seem surprising that Morocco’s motion picture capital should be in a remote high desert town on the south side of the High Altas Mountains as you draw near to the border with Algeria.
But Quarzazate was chosen for its role precisely because of where it is: in the middle of a gorgeous desert mixed with rocky hills and wide dry ranges. In other words, ideal for the spaghetti westerns and biblical epics that helped put this centuries-old place on the motion picture map.
Plus one huge bonus: ancient Berber villages scattered round about where in many ways life goes on as it did a thousand years ago when some of the villages were founded.
In this video I examine Quarzazate’s medina, its motion picture museum and, most of all, it’s unique urbanity in the middle of an otherwise spectacular and empty landscape.
