Star Wars: A Vergence in the Force [Episodes I-III Fanedit]

  • Although he never released it to the public, Topher Grace is typically credited with starting the trend of re-cutting the Star Wars prequels into one movie. His fan edit suggested that somewhere in between the bloated films, there’s a good movie.
    A few fan edits were made in the spirit of Topher Grace’s cut, but none of them fully satisfied me. They went on too long or the quality of the editing wasn’t strong enough. They also cut too much out of Episode 1. I decided to do one myself.
    After working for a few months with friends to help and give me notes, I’ve created a fan edit that I think satisfies. It sticks to the story of Anakin’s descent into the dark side, his relationship with his mother, his thirst for glory, and his somewhat unhealthy relationship with Padmé.

    Wow so, this was kicked off TH-cam for a few years and then magically reappeared a few weeks ago. Thank you Disney? I'm so happy to see so many people enjoying it. When me and my good friend Paul Odgren made this together back in 2015, we thought it'd get like 514 views. It's been amazing to see the response over the years. Thank you all for watching. ❤

      Obviously the original dialogue in that scene sucked, but the problem with fan edits is that it was not possible to substitute good dialogue. As a result, the story line is just left even more underdeveloped than in the original.
      Similarly, the mute Jar Jar just seems like a recurring joke for the fans. He sucked as a character, but removing all his lines is almost as bad as his racist stereotype of a Jamiacan accent.

      Yeah I actually came to a similar conclusion. I wanted a good edit of the prequels that would tell a more solid story. It seems it's not possible, they will forever be awful. They definitely make me appreciate the orig trig more though, so there's that.

    At first, I didn’t like the change to Maul’s ”death” but the lethal efficiency of it and how we would have reacted to seeing Mail in two pieces as he fell changed my mind.
    It was a more vicious death in this version. One slip in a lightsaber duel and you’re done. It showed the lethality of a lightsaber.

      I agree. Having Obi hanging on with Maul just looking at him, only to flip over him and cut him in half while he just derpily takes it? Yeah.. this is much better.

  • @ChrisWEEZ
    @ChrisWEEZ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Decent edit. It made Anakin and Palpatine's relationship make a little more sense, and emphasized Anakin's concern for Padme. A bit action-heavy for me. I would have omitted the ending where we see Padme giving birth and naming the twins. It would have been more surprising in the original trilogy to find out that not only is Anakin alive, but his children also survived. We also could have assumed Leia grew up with Padma for a time, which would have made her line about remembering her mother in Return of the Jedi make sense.
    That said...when all you've got is lemons, it's hard to make anything more than lemonade. Anakin and Obi-wan's dialogue in Revenge of the Sith is still painful. Anakin's inane reason for turning to the Dark Side and his apparent stupidity are still there.
    Still would love to see the Topher Grace edit. 😎

    Many times I thought about doing a prequel fan edit, but now I don't have to because you got everything perfectly right. This is excellent! This segues perfectly into Rogue One. The original spirit of the story is finally found from your tighter and more focused storyline. I particularly like the transition into Episode III, it's a really good match shot that conveys that time has passed (I also noticed the bit of the Clone Wars rendition of the main theme to make the musical transition- good use of resources, I bet that took ages to find and make work). I was disappointed with the time skip to Episode II when I saw it, but honestly there's just no good material to show the passage of time there. Excellent cutting my dude

      Not a good idea changing the quality of the movie such as zoom-in that you can't see the action you don't know what's going on, ugly sound, backwards, missing action that you cut the scene to shortening the good story. Instead of destroying the quality it might as well put it in the small screen size without changing all those quality as I mentioned. The TH-cam, movie seller, website movie pay won't say anything because it's already in an ugly small screen size movie. The upload quality of the movie is excellent.
      If those qualities were degraded no one will watch it unless if somebody is desperately want to watch even though couldn't understand what's going on just to kill the time lol.
      Editorbinks, thnx for that excellently, smartly, beautiful upload.

    This was genuinely brilliant. During the Mustafar scenes where you've edited out certain lines of dialogue the lack of music is very apparent and slightly jarring. It also sounds like there's some distortion in the last bit where Anakin is lying burning, and Obi-Wan is shouting at him; as though the volume is cutting out a little. Ultimately just technical stuff...
    Frankly this is FAR better than the prequels as a whole. The editing of Episode 2 that made Anakin's and Padme's relationship look more like he was being persistent to the point of gas-lighting, that was great. Makes sense that Vader would have a warped idea of love based on what his own desires rather than a mutual attraction and affection.
    The beginning was very quick cut, perhaps it was a little over-cut; but it ended up being an ultimately far better film as a whole than any of the prequel films alone. Well done.

    • @chriswronka1378
      @chriswronka1378  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      thanks the gaslighting was exactly what I was going for! He's a creep and successfully manipulates Padme into loving him. And that distortion is TH-cam's fault, it caught a copyright on that song at that part and tried to remove it I guess? And it's too late to fix because it has too many views. But I have a copy here, without the distortion: avergenceintheforce-blog.tumblr.com/
      And the beginning is choppy I agree, because I tried to keep as much as I could but still keep the film to a normal film length. And I didn't want to start with the the Maul fight like a lot of other recuts. But I hit what story beats I felt important to the overall story of Anakin so I'm satisfied with it.

    • @runi5413
      @runi5413 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I've kinda pictured that movie in my head as well... My take would be to do a version of the classic Romulus & Remus myth about brotherly betrayal (or sisters, doesn't rlly matter) as an origin-story for the Jedi and the Sith.
      Set on some primitive backwater planet bereft of modern technology (to set up the swords & knights stuff for later) and then maybe introduce a hostile, more advanced alien species they have to go up against (before turning on each other), so that's how lightsabers enter into the story.

    [Excuse my english. Not a native speaker.]
    God, this is good.
    One can tell you were really concerned with storytelling while making this. Unlike other recuts I've seen, this actually sounds like an actual movie. And it's a good one. You've operated a miracle. Cutting off the whole Kamino plot? That was genious. Works damn well, seriously. Not to mention your choices about episode 1 and all the other details.
    The only problem was in me as an audience. Since I find episode 3 in specific a reasonable movie and I'm used to it, it was hard for me to swallow the cuts made into it. Yet it's clear that these cuts make complete sense to the objective and I'm not blind to the fact that half of the screentime is from that movie.
    I think I'm gonna adopt this as the definitive version from now on.
    I plan on making subtitles to it in my language (brazilian portuguese) so I can share it with my friends.
    Thank you for this excellent job. Congratulations.
    It gets me thinking if it wouldn't be a good idea to keep episode 3 untouched and only merge episodes 1 and 2. What are your thoughts on that?

    • @chriswronka1378
      @chriswronka1378  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Henrique Pardinho Hey thanks for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed it. And about Episode 3, I never did think of keeping Episode 3 fully intact for a few reasons. For one, there are a lot of moments I just don't like, specifically some moments from first 25 mins or so (on the ship, the crash landing, it's all a waste of time). I tried to keep what was important: The awesome opening shot with the two Jedi starships, Griveous's introduction, and Dooku's death.
      I also didn't like the Yoda/Sidious fight. That was so ridiculous. And the plotline where Anakin was a double spy always felt needlessly convoluted to me. There are also so many pointless scenes between Anakin & Padme where they talk about what they just did, and what they're about to do. So I cut those.
      Another consideration I had was length. I wanted to keep this to a normal movie length to keep that regular movie feeling. Otherwise only the hardcore star wars fans would watch it (they're still probably the only ones who will but whatever).

      +Henrique Pardinho I found the story and pacing of the whole first 45 minutes to be very abrupt, lacking any explanation of what was happening. I know its hard to improve on that section! but the cut seemed to throw me around. I get the concept of what you tried to do, and if you know that going in it makes sense.
      However after a somewhat bumpy start (gliding over a few too many things, all too briefly to make a coherent story) it was a brilliant edit, and it works brilliantly in machette order (45 (1) 23 6) showing anikin becoming vader. Its like watching an extended flashback of that change and, on the whole star wars still remains lukes story with a flash of that vader transformation in the middle.
      amazing

    I love the edit, but I would’ve kept in the scene where Palpatine manipulates Padme into holding a vote of confidence it’s by far the most important scene in that entire movie and I’d say of the best parts of it. not to mention is a natural Segway to them leaving for Naboo. As it happens in the edit, they just kind of leave after arriving.

    Honestly, I find the whole 'Young Anakin Skywalker' story contradicts what Lucas originally presented in the first trilogy and by what Obi-Wan Kenobi had told Luke regarding his father and how he knew him.

      Agreed. The brevity of it really gave the action that much more of an impact. Even opens up the quick victory up to the interpretation that Obi had to tap into a sliver of the dark side to get that rage-induced edge for the quick win. Of course, that's just me thinking too deeply into it. Buuut...even with that, that's essentially a apart of the point of these sort of things also!

    This is legit a good movie with this edit. Now, I'm one of those people who grew up with the prequels as a kid, so I'll always view them through nostalgic rose goggles (kinda like the older people do now with Episode 6), so I've always enjoyed Episodes 2 and 3 and I always will. I think Episode 3 is a good film, nostalgia or not. It's certainly the one that tugs on my heartstrings the most, out of both trilogies.
    The Phantom Menace is such a mess, however.
    I loved it when I went to see it with my family as a 9 year old kid, but I just can't stomach it now that I'm an adult. What you see from Episode 1 in this edit are (with one or two exceptions) the things that can be salvaged from that movie.
    Now it's 2018, and Disney has made the terrible and uninspiring Episodes 7 and 8, not including Rogue One (which I enjoyed - it gets a 7/10 from me). I'm catching Ep 8 on bluray, but I don't personally know many people who left the theatre even remotely satisfied. From the internet's reaction, I think something a friend said to me: "If you don't like 7, you won't like 8" is pretty much true, and Episode 7 is not good. The effects are neat, but it is so bloody uninspiring and the main character so uninteresting, it just sucks across the board. Just the way they wasted the old cast...
    Now that we've seen what Disney, Brutus-Kathleen Kennedy and Jar-Jar Abrams have done to the new trilogy (lore-wise, if nothing else), I think I'm not alone in thinking "Gee, I wish it was Lucas making the new trilogy instead".
    Gee, I wish it was Lucas making the new trilogy instead.

    I would like to start out with the fact that I do love the idea of trying to re-cut the prequels to try and improve the quality. However, I don't really agree with some of the edits you made. Please don't take my comments the wrong way, this is mostly me talking through how I would do it if I had the patience to edit the whole thing through.
    First off, you spent way to long on the awkward romance scenes. You easily could have cut out 10 or 20 minutes of just Anakin Padme scenes and had it work just fine. All you need for the story to make sense is to establish that they have become a couple, and in this case I think less is more with showing it happen. This is actually what I think the biggest mistake that George made when making the movies, and in this re-cut you have done nothing to correct it, simply preserved it.
    Meanwhile, many of the plot elements that you cut out I feel were necessary. I don't think that cutting out the entire Kamino arc is the best decision. Establishing that the clone army was already well into production long before anyone was even talking about the possibility of the GAR is important for showing how Sidious was pulling strings in the background the whole time and that it was never the Republic's army but his. It also cuts out the significance of Jango and the reason for Obi-Wan to follow him to Geonosis.
    Then there are the action scenes. It is very important to, as I heard one person put it, keep the "War" in "Star Wars". As such, I think the following battles should be present in their entirety (or at least close to it, including planing phases): Geonosis, Coruscant, Kashyyyk, and Utapau. You mostly hit this, but you did cut out more than I think you should have.
    As far as smaller scale fights go, there are several that are missing when I do not think they should be. Both the Obi-Wan/Jango and Yoda/Sidious fights were excellent and I see no reason to omit them. They are both fun to watch and have plot relevance.
    You did do a good job of highlighting Palpatine's manipulation of Anakin and Anakin's general descent into darkness.

    • @chriswronka1378
      @chriswronka1378  8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Crayshack I think you're right with a lot of things. I may have kept too many of the Anakin and Padme scenes in there. I personally don't mind those scenes because it's showing Anakin being a messed up creep. Of course the actual "love story" is terrible but when viewing it as watching Anakin flail trying to get Padme to like him I find it interesting. But it does still drag, I agree.
      I also agree about the Kamino storyline, I would have liked to keep some of that in but it's hard to do that and also keep the storyline from getting convoluted in other plot details. It would have added too much time. I wanted this recut to focus on Anakin's story, not Obi-Wan's. I'm thinking of revisiting this and doing another cut with more Obi wan and less Anakin but I don't know if I could commit myself again to recutting these films, and I'm not sure if it'd even work that well.
      Thanks for your comment.

      @BrittonFilmmaker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We save Boba Fett by removing the awful Kamino sequence, and the Emperor and Yoda fight was awful. Yoda tells Luke in Empire that lightsabers are a coward's tool (he puts it in a nicer way), and that the force is all reaching. The Emperor straight up says "Take your Jedi Weapon" to Luke in Jedi because such things are below him. It's ridiculous to have the two people about that kind of battle then do battle with what they call primitive weaponry.

    • @hughbrissedits459
      @hughbrissedits459 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thing is once you have these scenes you need to explain them too so the whole thing could be a can of worms and too long.
      The film is about Anakin turning dark. Less is more.
      There could be another edit focusing on Obi Wan but for me this was spot on. A simple back story of the Empire before I watch Rogue One and the originals. With nearly all the cringe moments removed.

    this is really good, id give it an 8/10 , some of the pacing seems rushed at times and a bit of extra time in space would have been good, perhaps adding an extra 15 minutes in total to smooth transitions and allowing the audio to flow a little better. however it is pretty awesome to see it all recut to a single movie

    I think the failure of the prequels was that they *told* us things rather than *showing* us things. I think if we had less exposition and more things in the background, they would have been much better. What if the Republic just kind of built a Clone army because the Separatists had, instead, already built up a droid army and declared war by Episode 2? We wouldn't need to see the Kamino plot. We would just see things work well if we, perhaps, heard Clones talking about training or battles. They're Clones, but they're still people. They talk. They have relationships.
    A movie *following* a squad of Clones through the war would be pretty nice, or at least, a portion of a movie following certain Clones through the war would be pretty nice. The Clone Wars animated series itself was pretty nice because it added a lot more humanity to the characters we'd seen before, and that was one of the major reasons why it was so well-received, at least from what I can tell.
    This is an excellent fan edit, and remains loyal to things that matter. We don't see Jar Jar as a comical idiot, but we do see him take on a serious role. Jar Jar doing serious things is kind of nice. We see Anakin's emotions get the better of him, while still seeing him a bit troubled by questioning his morals and his beliefs. We sort of really do see him seduced by the Dark Side, but not in such a horrible, painstakingly long manner.
