  • The choir of the Spanish & Portuguese Jews' Congregation of London performing on 24 October 2010 at a concert to honour Maurice Martin on his retirement after over 50 years as choirmaster.
This well-loved melody is sung at the beginning of the Ne'ilah service on Kippur, as we beg G-d to forgive our sins at the hour of the closing of the Gates of Heaven. The Hazan repeats the final stanza in an ornamented form. The soloist is Maurice Martin and the conductor is Eliot Alderman.

It's amazing that these Spanish and Portuguese Jews are able to preserve their identity 500 years after the diaspora of 1492.

What I love about this is the young faces in the choir. It gives me hope for the future of Edut Ma'arab

Thank you. It's lovely. Makes me proud to be Sephardic (on Mom's side- Sananes and Saltiel). Be well and God bless.

We sang Bendigamos at my shul at Shavuot, as Birchat ha Mazon. It's such a lovely melody.

Interesting, beautiful, very artistic. I would define it more as "a distinctly British serving, with a slight aroma of Portuguese-Spanish melody." It is definitely quite far and different from the original but still beautiful as I said. Shana tova.

Yes. Would you agree that there is a strong flavour of the local non-Jewish liturgical music? Presumably we are influenced to a greater or lesser extent by our surroundings wherever we happen to live. I remember the time when members of the Jewish "clergy" wore black capes and "dog-collars"...

Spanish and Portuguese Jews are Western Sephardic, the descendents of the Jews that were driven out of Spain and Portugal 1492 and 1498. Many of them only were able to return to there Judaism in their places of refuge.
There are or were large Spanish and Portuguese communities and synagogues in Hamburg-Altona, Glückstadt, Amsterdam, London, New York, Suriname, and Istanbul.

And when the Rabbi gives a D'rasha, does he face the Heichal?
