"El Nora Alila" is a Jewish prayer from Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). Spiritually we understand it as a deeper re-connection to the Divine, which is always present within our hearts. "La ilaha illa Allah" - there is nothing but the Divine (GOD) - the islamic creed is added to the song, as it reflects a faith that all abrahamic religions share. It is also the basis of all spirituality and mysticism referring to the oneness of every creature with its creator and the unity of the whole creation. "La ilaha illa Allah" is part of the Dhikurullah, a devotional ritual of the spiritual practise of the sufis. "El Nora Alila" is a liturgical poem (piyyut) and as part of the tradition in Sephardi Judaism sung at the beginning of the Ne'ilah service at the conclusion of Yom Kippur.
Our intention is to spread a message of peace and unity to Jews and Muslims and to all, no matter what they believe in. We would love to remember that we all are God's creation, sisters and brothers in humanity and with all creatures on our precious planet and within the whole universe.
The instruments in the song are among the oldest in the world: the voice, didgeridoo (yidaki), shofar and drum. All of them are both musical as well as mystical instruments. From early on in the history of mankind humans have used their voice to sing upon divine spirits. It's an anthropological constant.
The shofar is the Jewish calling voice and was used in ancient Israel to call people together and to announce the new moon. It is a highly spiritual instrument, a biblical horn that is believed to open up the gates of heaven. In relation to forgiveness and mercy it is blown in Israeli communities during the Hebrew new year (Rosh Hashanah) and the day of the atonement (Yom Kippur). The shofar blast is like a wake-up call out of one's spiritual slumber during a time for re-connecting to source and re-commitment to a divine mission in this world.
Drums have always been used in trance rituals like a spiritual heart beat all over the globe. Up to this day drums have been played to support chanting and dancing, like in ecstatic sufi practises (e.g. Hadra, whirling). They help activate healing powers and strengthen the connection to the source of all life.
The didgeridoo is a wind instrument with distinctive transcendental vibrations. It has been played by aboriginal people in the north of Australia for millenia. The name yidaki, the most common indigenous name for it, is from Yolngu people. The yidaki plays an essential role in spiritual ceremonies. Most importantly, the yidaki player accompanies the ceremonial singing of songmen both harmonically and rhythmically. “El Nora Alila (La ilaha illa Allah)” is inspired by this sacred tradition.
The idea for the song was born during the work on the folk baroque album "Exaltation" by Yaniv d'Or and Ensemble NAYA (Naxos 2018).

Literally “El Nora Alila” means "God of awesome deeds" as in Psalm 66:5, "Go and see the works of God, He is awesome in deeds [נורא עלילה] toward mankind."
