    Great review! I really like that you did the "boring" download of the drivers and configuring with your DAW. This is an aspect almost every other reviewer skips, but can be confusing and frustrating for people who are unfamiliar with that process. Also, your trouble-shooting of your initial input signal with the base was nice too.

    That was an amazing intro and demo for the SSL2+, which I bought yesterday. The sound quality is awesome and I think I had less trouble setting it up than you did, but not by much. I wasn't really looking for a guide, just info about the interface. But I found your vid to be entertaining and informative. Thanks for taking the time. SSL should use this video in their promotional ads 😄

    Which under $300 mic is suitable for this interface or Motu M4 ?
    What other things do I have to buy to set up?
    For rock vocals and window, SSL2+ or M4?

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a lot of great choices for vocal mics under $300 on the market today. Some of my favorites would be the Lewitt LCT 440 PURE and LCT 240 PRO, The Rode NT1 (not the NT1A), and the trusty old SM57/SM58. There are really too many to mention in one comment, but there are some great resources out there to hear them for yourself: the Podcastage channel on TH-cam, the Audio Test Kitchen website, and the Sweetwater mic shootout on their website are all great ways to listen to a variety of mics at various price points and see which ones appeal to you.

    Lol @ the quick TWSS. Great job on the song. I really like how you did the drums, sounds great. And your drumming keeps getting better. I love the roll fills. They don't quite work, but they also work perfectly. Very nice. Good tones on everything. You know I love the 800, but the Jazzmaster and Fender combo sounded beautiful. You did a great job with that little interface.

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a ton, Greg! I stewed over how to do the drums with 2 mics. That SSL Drumstrip plugin is no joke, even though I overdid it a bit. Thanks so much for the compliments, and yeah I have no idea what I'm doing on the drum fills :) The triplet feel was something different to try to keep up with.
      I have to agree that the Jazzmaster and DR combo is something else. As I say with all of my best gear, it's better at making music than I am. And even though I didn't do it justice when I fouled up the recording, the 800 sounded amazing in the room at the time I was playing that solo track with a fuzz pedal and the Boss CS-3. I just couldn't stop moving my hands or else it would have gone into a full-on eruption of feedback. I love that feeling!

    Hey, thanks so much for this great video. I'm on the cusp of purchasing an SSL2+ and doing my due diligence online to find reviews and your video was really helpful. I hope you don't mind, but can I ask a question? I'm not very technologically literate and I couldn't find an answer to the following question anywhere (maybe because it's obvious?), but in terms of my DAW, would the SSL2+ work if I was using GarageBand on an iPadPro? Would really appreciate any guidance you might have. Thanks so much.

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad it was helpful! I don't have any experience using interfaces on mobile platforms, so I can really only tell you what little I know. The key piece of gear to connect an interface to a tablet or phone is the camera adapter kit plus a power adapter. That's mainly because the USB/Lightning port on a tablet/phone doesn't supply the 5V necessary to power up a bus-powered interface like the SSL 2+.
      The other consideration is whether or not the audio interface is USB class-compliant. Since there aren't any drivers for iOS or Android for most audio interfaces, they must comply with the standard set of features that the USB protocol offers, and this is called class-compliance.
      I don't see anything directly from SSL that says that the 2+ is class-compliant, but I do see reputable sources like Sound On Sound report that it is, indeed, class-compliant:
      "The 2 and 2+ are class-compliant devices, and on Mac OS, they use the built-in Core Audio USB driver. There is no control-panel utility and thus no need to install any software."
      I hope that helps!

      I tend to leave my interfaces on all of the time, but if I do shut it off, I just pull the plug. If phantom power is engaged, it'll shut off gracefully as the unit loses power. Although it's probably a good idea to turn off phantom power before shutting down the unit, just so you don't surprise yourself with some pops and crackles next time you turn it on, or if you've got different gear plugged into it next time you power it on.

    Hello there, I'm such a fan of your videos! I was wondering what do you think of the Ammoon AGM02 Mixer and Can I use it as an audio interface to record guitar/mic? And how would it compare to the almighty budget-friendly UMC22 lol
    Thank you in advance

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I'm not familiar with that mixer, so I can't say much about it. I'm a little suspicious that the only retailers that sell it are Wish, WalMart, and AliExpress. But that aside, it does have 2 mic inputs, as opposed to the 1 mic input on the UMC22. It doesn't seem to support ASIO drivers though, which would be a problem when trying to record music in real-time.

  • @reboundbeats
    @reboundbeats 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, I just got the SSL2 today because of your review. Do you know, how to set the asio driver up, so it doesn't "kill" all the sounds of other programs? It is like muting all the other programs when I open the ASIO in my DAW and it's still like this when I close the DAW, I have to replug the interface.

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's kind of a question for the ages when it comes to ASIO. It really comes down to the specific drivers, from what I understand. Some ASIO drivers are better about sharing than others. I've read that technically ASIO can't "share" between applications, but some manufacturers can pull it off. You might try looking for an option in your DAW to disable exclusive mode, but that's not exactly sure-fire.

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@reboundbeats The first 6 months after I got my first guitar at age 13, I just sat in my bedroom and made awful noises 😁
      By that point, my parents realized that I might actually stick with playing the guitar so they paid for weekly lessons for the next couple of years. At one point I was taking lessons from 2 teachers. This was pre-internet, so I bought and studied every guitar tab magazine that I could afford. But mainly, I just played. And played. And played. Every day, sometimes for hours at a time. And I kept playing for the next 30 years!
      I think that with any instrument, it's all about repetition. Come back to it every day, even when you get discouraged or bored. It's the moments when you have breakthroughs that make it all worth it. Seek out a teacher or course that can help you establish good playing habits, which is REALLY boring at first, but will pay dividends for the rest of your playing life. I think that the first time you play a familiar song, or create something new that you love, it'll feel so good that you'll want to keep doing it.
      Best of luck in your journey!

    this is the demo that I like. what is hi-z and proximity effect ?

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi-Z means "high impedance", which describes the higher resistance used for guitar/bass cables and jacks. That's opposed to Lo-Z or "low impedance" cables and jacks used for microphones and line-level signals.
      Proximity effect is the exaggerated amount of low frequency that a microphone picks up when you get really close to it. As you back away from the microphone, it picks up less and less low frequency relative to the rest of the frequencies.

  • @Eric_In_SF
    @Eric_In_SF 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What a bummer. On that bass guitar financial picture you had a great sound and then pulled the game down so that it wasn't peaking. That's the delight of an SSL console. Pushing it hard and getting all those harmonics. Would love to see a demo where you push it all the way with the instruments.

  • @alvaroocampo6876

    That bright and thin Precision Bass is probably an standard MIM pre 2018 with ceramic pickups and roundwounds, the tone you are searching for is alnico V pickups and maybe flatwounds too. Then you are set.

    • @YHRS
      @YHRS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The issue that I tend to have with the P-Bass is that it's too boomy, and not too thin. I overdid the low end cut in this mix, so it probably sounds thin if anything. It was after this mix that I finally decided to figure out exactly where this bass is too loud, and it turns out it's right around 110 Hz. So now I know to do my cutting right around there, and I still get a solid low end 😊

    Trying to choose an interface....its so difficult....this one...the audient Id 14 mk2....evo 8....UA Volt 2.....so many very similar unity out there.....but this video gave me a welcome pause from all the head scratching I've been doing....just really wonderfull to watch you go on about your studio stuff...and enjoyed the music you made in the process.

      Thanks so much! The good news is that there is hardly a bad choice among interfaces on the market today. If it's got enough inputs and outputs for your needs, then you'll be in good shape no matter which one you pick.

    so to record vocals it should be on input ?

    wasn't the surface pro itself the reason why the interface was having issues at higher rates ? only 8GB RAM on a 1.9ghz processor. i can see the SSL drivers requiring a bit more juice, which imo, isn't a bad or good thing.
    semi-unrelated, i noticed you didn't uncheck the safemode. on a decent computer, you shouldn't run into any issues unchecking that. it'll let you achieve the lowest latency possible for your system. it'll only become a problem when the computer is under some serious stress. but a sufficiently built rig rarely maxes out on CPU usage when using DAWs/recording.

    What a bout using the monitor mix switch ? To get a balance to record to that's the main recording hardware focus on the SSL can you show or anyone explain how this functions please

    so the question i guess would be, with the SSL and SSL+ ruffly in the same area as the Motu 2M with one would you get for your own studio if you had to spend your own money, because I'm having a really ruff time deciding and in no way can afford both

    does this interface work with the new Apple M1 computers? Cant seem to get a straight answer, even SSL's website fails to mention

      just my two cents here, but I think its more about the OS, the system we are on. Most interfaces are struggling to keep up. Apogee decided not to on their "lower" end products for example. Frustrating and Ive found I have to call the actual company to find out--expensive apogee has great customer service snd others less so.

    Nice video.Was wondering if you could answer a question. I use a MacBook pro 2.2 Ghz Quad Core Intel core i7
    16 GB ram
    i had no issues when i used my old interface.A presonus audioboxUSB 96
    I just bought the SSL 2 plus.And the problem i have is my external drive doesn't show up anymore.
    Has anyone ever heard of this problem
    Thanks
