    I am from Finland and here winter tires are mandatory with or without studs. Most of the population uses studded tires. I recommend that the pattern of the studs should not be in a straight line because when the tires slips studs dig the groove in the ice and the next studs go through the same groove and do not bite into the ice. i like your videos.

    A little tip from a guy who lives in the north of Norway where we use studded dedicated wintertires 6-7 months of the year (70`north..). Put the studs in a patern where they don`t line up. If they stand in line and you slam the brakes, there will only be like 2 studs helping you, but in a patern where they are spread out. You get 3-4 times the grip.
    Normally you should not put studs in the middle, since the tire are thinner than on the edges. The chance of getting a flat from a stud that pushes through the tire is pretty big... If you want to put more thin-line groowes in the tire for better grip in snow, you want them in the middle/ not where the studs are. Otherwise the studs will fall out.

    As I'm sure you already read. You shouldn't line the studs up. They call them "scratch lines." When we stud snowmobile tracks, we follow a pattern that gives you the most amount of different scratch lines, so one stud doesn't follow the one before or after it. That said, love the channel. Keep warm & be safe!

    Just so you know, you can remove these studs, but you cannot run the tire and then put the studs back in. Small stone(s) will get into the hole left behind when the stud is removed. If you put a stud back into a hole that has a pebble in it, the stud will push the stone into the inner cords of the tire and damage it.

      You’re correct and incorrect at the same time. Normal studs, yes. But these studs don’t get pressed into holes, they screw into the tire. Very different

    I really enjoy the variety of content on your channel. I’m considered a Senior Citizen these days, but I still love doing things myself, whenever possible. I don’t know if you have enough work to justify the initial costs, but you can purchase a reliable half ton chain-fall rather inexpensively. Your garage appears to be quite stout, so you could add an I-beam for added mobility. Also thank you for sharing your tooling ideas, even though they are not sponsors of the channel. The set up you use for your floor Jack is awesome. It’s on my list of things to purchase next year. Also, don’t let a few minor mistakes discourage you. It happens to everyone who actually does the work.
    Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your loved ones. I hope your channel continues to grow and prosper.

    Hummm I have never seen screw in ice studs. I am sure they helped out a lot on those hard rubber tires. Normally one would want to Zig zag the pattern as the studs are installed , that can give more grip if they are not installed in a straight line. BUT that was an awesome idea ! A true snow tire with the 3 peaks Mountain emblem on the side wall has a lot softer rubber compound that stays flexible along with the tread siping for winter driving. I use the Bridgestone Blizzaks for winter driving , they are awesome in the winter, even on glare ice.. BUT you want to get them off as soon as winter driving is done , they will wear very quick during non winter use.

    Make it more random pattern. Been driving with stud winter tires since 1997 (during winter time obviously) and during that period of time ammount of stud's in the the factor tire has increased about 25% and pattern has been make more random.
    If you put them in straight line the second stud that hit the ice wont grip it nearly at all. But if you have a stud little "out lined" , then that one will grip on ice as the good as the first stud.
    But any case stud's with any kind of pattern is better than no stud's at all.

Too late now but I have had tires with straight line stud patterns they don't work as well as a pattern that puts the studs in several different patterns.

    My shop (36x36) use to be pig barn, and the original owner had an upper floor installed to store hay and feed. I used the barn door rails like they use on sliding barn doors. I have two 8 footers, and I screwed them to the upper floor joists about 40" apart, Then I made a shorter 39' cross rail between the two 8 footers. I mounted a 850 pound Harbor Freight 110 volt winch to a couple of 1/2" by 3 pieces of plate that I hooked a couple of wheel sets too. It is basically an overhead crane like the big shops have, just smaller. It will lift a dressed 396 big block with the 375 trans bolted on to it. I only did that once. I now just do the engine and do the trans on my trans jack. With both together, it was a bit much, but it did lift them, so the door rails are quite strong. I built my 1923 T Bucket with that crane set-up. I use it for other things too, actually I use it all the time. I don't have a hernia, but after 45 years as a heavy equipment mechanic, my back is not in the best shape. Then there is always the cherry-picker, but they take up so much room.

    Just now, late Feb, seeing this video. Many have already said what I was going to about lining up the studs.. DON't. Another thing, not too many studs. Many years ago I had access to studs (at a tire shop where I worked part-time). Had a fantastic set of Semperit winter tires on my '67 Ford Cortina. It was rear wheel drive. I studded every hole there was in the tire, and there were many. The first time I had to make a panic stop on dry pavement, I ended up sideways due to the studs skidding on the dry pavement. Needless to say, I removed many of them to allow the tires to be safe. On a side note: When studs were popular, many states either disallowed them completely or restricted the months when they were allowed. They tear up the pavement.

    • @iadr
      @iadr ปีที่แล้ว

      I've found the opposite. Wet roads and a studs are a bad combination. Like a shoe'd horse. Or like a ball bearing between you and the road. The conditions they work in they give you soemthing extra, but when everybody using a studless winter tire (Blizzak, Michelin Ice) is at ease as road conditions ease up (melt), you with studs fall behind their capabilities.

    • @TheJHA67
      @TheJHA67 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iadr Yes, that's right.. on wet roads and dry asphalt, studs only make everything worse.. longer braking distance, worse grip in turns.. But on ice, nothing is better.. studless winter tires (not all-season tires) are often equal on normal cars when there is snow on the road... because the spikes usually do not reach through the snow to the hard surface. In Norway, they are debating whether they should equip ambulances, police cars and taxis with studs in the cities where it is normally "illegal" to have studded tires. (It is allowed to use studded tyres, but then you have to pay a daily fee) of the fact that studless tires work poorly where the roads are polished ice.. and studded tires tear up this surface so that studless tires can get a better grip..

      They did great and held up far better than expected

    Not that it matters in this case: There is a reason that mass produced gussets round off or clip off the inside corner of their gussets. This is to prevent the customer from welding all the way into the inside corner. This is because welding the inside corner can introduce a stress riser that can cause cracking at that point. If you think about it this way - you weld the gusset onto a part of the metal that can flex when load is placed on it. If you weld into a corner completely, the gusset is welded into a part of the metal that is very stiff (because it is welded into two planes that are orthogonal) and can't flex, so when a high load is placed on it it tends to crack there. Your fairlead isn't going to place a large load in the corner, so it doesn't matter for this application. It is just better to know there is a reason for not welding a gusset into a corner, so you won't do it when it is important.

    I used Hex Head sheet metal screws... in my Timberland boots. Kept me upright on sheet ice.

    Will you be adding gusset plates where the receiver tube adapter is attached to the frame?

    so how are the studs working out?

    LOL This reminds me why I left Oregon. Why not just get an inexpensive receiver mount for your winch? I have one and its trivial to plug it in when you need it and demount when you don't. Now you have all that steel taking up space and costing $$$ to drag around.

      ummm.... it is a receiver mount winch. And yes, I could just put it in the rear receiver when needed, but since that "when needed" part happens multiple times a day... that just seems like not too practical of an option

    I thought you guys have winter tires with studs pre fitted? I live in the sub tropics. Closest we get is driving on sand.

    Them studs look like they might work better than the others, anxious to see how your winch set up works. I'm pretty sure if your wife saw you lifting on that Fram and winch that she might be a little angry but my thoughts about that is sometimes it's better to ask forgiveness than permission 😉 try and be more careful on lifting and as always be safe 👍

    Hears a good idea for you, is to get a ATV remote winch mount it in the rafts of garage. Second find your bads eye bolts, mount them in different spots in the shop with pulley hooks. My weight is 165lb and there's no way I ever get a hernia. I'm lilting a 800lb Jet Ski with the system. 8'×19' w/2"×12" for rafts. / please update us on how the tire studs works out. I also want to know, because I Race 100cc Yama,Emmick Kart on ice in Minnesota. Keep the tires spinning, Thanks
    Diesel are you strong enough to change a tire in the cold weather?

    Wouldnt it make sense to have winter tires with studs already installed, and just swap over like they do in Alaska and other cold snowy states?
