  • Twenty five years ago, India was forced to launch a war to evict Pakistani intruders in the Kargil, Dras and Batalik sectors of what was then the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The summer of 1999 will go down in history as a major turning point in India-Pakistan relations. It was also India’s first war that was fought under intense media scrutiny.
Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale was among dozens of mediapersons who reported the Kargil war from the battle zone, then for Outlook magazine.
A quarter century later, he revisits the areas to recall the events and turning points in the 50-day-long war but this time with half a dozen veterans who had led troops in crucial battles that summer.
In this episode of 'Simply Nitin', he brings you the backstory of that journey.
