  • Make sure you are ready the next time you valet your car.
Luckily, there is a range and you won’t need to pull out a tip calculator for valet service.
Heidi will share some etiquette around tipping valets that will have you polished and primed the next time you use valet service.

I’m looking at a condo in Chicago that only offers valet parking. If I’m using my car on a regular basis, am I still expected to tip every time in this scenario?

As a valet driver myself my job takes all the money for the parking fee so we work for tips and most of the times I leave keys in the cup holder and then take the tip as they go inside there car

      Hello Kevo!
Thank you very much for the comment! I had not considered that--but leaving the keys in the cup holder makes it easy--and yes, I hope everyone tips generously! I very much appreciate the luxury of someone parking my car for me.
Thank you for all you do to help people and make things easy for them--you're awesome!
      Kind regards,

What is the actual procedure expected for giving a tip? Half the time when I give the keys with a $5, they only take the keys from my hand. Same when I pick up and give them my claim check, they don't take the bill.

      Hello!
Thank you very much for your comment and great question!
I do the same as you, I put the money behind the keys or claim check, and rarely, but sometimes, the valet takes the keys and leaves the money.
So, I've started saying, as I had the keys or claim check, "Thank you for taking good care of my car--please have a coffee on me." This has cleared up any question that the money is intended for the valet, and in a way, gives permission to take the funds. Frankly, $5 hardly buys a coffee, but they seem to appreciate the gesture, and it seems to work.
However, very rarely, a valet will tell me that they are not allowed to take a tip, in which case, I keep the money and simply thank them for dealing with my car. This is rare, but it happens, and you might even see a discrete sign that says, "No tips".
You sound very generous, I hope the "have a coffee" will work for you too!
      Kind regards,
      Heidi

@@HeidiDulebohn1 Thanks, I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in this issue!
This morning I tried a new method - first give the keys/claim check to the valet, and THEN hand them the tip while saying, "Thank you!"
I don't personally like coffee so I don't think I could authentically use your suggestion unfortunately.

"Be Kind. It's Free." What a line! Nice. Questions- If a woman is driving and the man is besides her when the valet takes the keys or gives the keys, is it ok for a woman to tip the valet? Even when she is not driving and her husband is driving, can she tip the valet instead of the man? When the valet serves a couple, is it necessary a man should only tip the valet?

      Hello!
Thank you so much for watching and leaving such a fantastic question!
There are some cultures around the world, that are more gender specific, and where local customs and traditions might dictate this a man handled the money.
However in many parts of the world that is changing or has already changed. For example, I am in the United States, and it is perfectly acceptable for me to tip, even if my husband is with me. It’s more of a person tipping another person,. I am a strong believer in being culturally aware, and culturally respectful; so if you are in a culture where it would be inappropriate for a woman to tip, then let the man tip, otherwise I say it’s just fine for one person to tip another person.
Thank you for such a terrific question we all need to be respectful, and appreciate the differences in our cultures around the world.
Thank you so much, and very best wishes for a lovely day!
      Warmest regards,
      Heidi💕💕💕💕

My second cousin once removed,a Daughter of rt hon Algood Stickapopple and his third wife Lady Pattypoon, was involved in an altercation at the Ritz when the Valet enquired if she had finished the bedrooms,,well !I ask you, she drew up to her full height, and swung an almighty dig at the misinformed gentleman, take that she roared !! Four sturdy men appeared and carried the man out, head first ! A complete case of mistaken identity

Parking was free when we initially made our reservation. When we arrived, it was changed to valet only and are charging $45 a day. So now you are telling me that parking is going to cost me, at the very least, an additional $10 more?
