Not a steal per se, but I did stretch a double into a home run when I was in little league. I got into second standing up. I don't remember where the third baseman was, but he wasn't at third base. When the second baseman threw to the pitcher, I took off for third with nobody there. Once on third, the pitcher who had been running to third with the ball started walking back to the mound. I took off for home. The pitcher made a quick throw to home,but the catcher dropped it.
At my game the pitcher threw back to the catcher and i realised that he didn't once look at me so the next time he did it i took off for home and he didn't realise i went till it was too late
Before my 2nd year I discovered I could wait for the pitch to cross home plate and beat our catchers throws every time. From that point on I stole whenever there was an open base. I never got thrown out .... .....except in an all-star game when I was on 2nd and couldn’t resist testing the catcher who had the best arm in our area by a mile. I knew I was pressing my luck but was confident. He threw me out so bad I almost turned around to run back to 2nd. haha. I felt that would be too embarrassing so tried one of those crazy sweeping slides. Didn't work. I just sent him a FB friend request to let him know he was the only one. Umps who saw me do it the first time almost always said "You left early! That's a warning!" I'd always smile and say "I didn't leave early." and he'd respond "no, you did." I'd steal on the next pitch and then he'd see I really didn't leave early. I umped LL 2 yrs and played 3 and never saw anyone attempt it. Yeah, as soon as it crossed i was running head down. no turning back "Or can you only steal if the catcher drops it, or the ball passes him?" Didn't wait for a drop or pass. When i had an open base i was usually stealing the next pitch 1. There are great videos and articles to teach you the exact best way to steal, such as footwork with the first step, which most youth baseball players are taught wrong, I think, and do a cross over. The specific kind of training to help steal bases, like weight lifting, quickness drills, etc are available online and can give a sizable boost. here is a 12 week program to improve stealing. My cocktail of strong and weak athletic traits happened to be ideal for stealing bases. To give 3 example: 1. I knew that would be the case because I played the seniors in basketball all the time, as well as pick up football games. 2. The last 40 I ran was in 10th grade (last due to a career ending injury), and I got a 4.71 while racing against my fastest teammate who got a 4.53. However, at 10 yards I was ahead, 20 we were even, 30 he's a step ahead and 40 he crushes me. That played out over and over when the team ran 60 yard sprints in practice. In fact, in 9th grade the whole team ran 400 meters. I was ahead at 40 yet ended up getting maybe 12th place, with a big fat offensive tackle eating up ground while passing me on the final stretch. I was thinking "how is this guy passing me" as I ran as fast as possible but to no avail. 3. Strong legs. Before Jr year, my bench press was nothing special (265), being 8th on the team and 2nd in my grade. However, my squat was 4th on the team, with only an All State DE and 2 All area 270 lb lineman ahead. Unlike the bench, in which a couple teammates my size could bench more, the top 8-10 in squats were all linemen...and me at 4th at 175lbs. Thus, the short area burst combined with strong legs for explosion and agility/quickness (since you have to start sideways and spin) made stealing bases perhaps what I could do best in sports. Even though I had a physical advantage, if you're one of the faster players I bet with training you could do it at a good rate. Catchers with weaker arms and the element of surprise are huge advantages. Sometimes, the suprise left 2nd uncovered and I walked in, running right past a confused second baseman before he knew what was going on *There are many technical terms for the training and science that I can't remember off hand, but are all over the internet whether by a trainer, sports scientists, a baseball player, Wikipedia or coach or whoever. *Free life lesson. At 5:20 depending on when he left which can't be seen, he probably should have been sent back. Catcher was ready and pitcher was scratching the rubber at the minimum.
At 5:21 pitcher has just put foot on plate, catcher is giving the sign and facing pitcher. I would say that's ready to receive. Maybe some umps would say he has to extend glove hand. That's narrow. We don't know exactly when runner leaves. Other runners appear to take about 4 seconds. It would have to be before 5:21 to be legal unless they narrow the rule.They should just make it anytime pitcher is on the rubber and therefore at risk of a balk. Rule is to help pitchers. How does it do that if runners can steal while he is on the rubber?
@@bbigjohnson069 Catcher had his mit on the ground from 5:20 - 5:23 as we can see during the time of the steal. If he were to receive a pitch in that position he would get drilled in the chest. You receive a pitch by holding the glove out in front of your body. holding the glove in front of your body gives you the best chance to stop a ball before hitting you. have the pitcher and catcher get set quickly is not difficult.

I was on third base in a playoff game and it was tied. The catcher goes to talk to the pitcher but never calls time. I take a lead and decide to try to steal home. I got to home but a bad slide cost me the run and i didn't score
For some reason there is so many right handed pitchers in 14U so when I get walked, they are always facing the other way. So I just steal second immediately It works every time!
I'm not in little league but I'm 11u. We can lead off and one time I tried to steal third from second base I was clearly safe and my coach tried to defend me when they called me out. I stole when the pitcher wasn't looking but the catcher threw it and you know what happened

When I was 10 I was on 3rd base and starting jogging home on ball 4 little did I do it was not bases loaded so I ran for my life and ended up being safe
I do not think anyone talked to us about any little league rules. Might have helped to know the rules to be a better player. Course that was 1968.... For me. We caught the ball threw it and tried to hit it.
To be honest, most of this kind of stealing is what killed my interest in little league when I was younger, and now as a coach it still seems cheap. I guess if you have to do this to win, this is what you do. But you don't see any of this in high school or above; it does nothing to prepare kids for baseball when they're just trying to learn the basics of pitching and catching, and now you add this? You might as well just have kids continue running once they get to first and never stop until they're out or score. It's not baseball.

EXACTLY At the lower levels running skills are almost always better than throwing catching skills. Being an asshole running all the time forcing the battle between throwing catching and running is ridiculous. I wish for Little League rule 7.13 would change to "Once the Pitcher has control of the ball and is in contact with the pitcher's plate all runners MUST return to base until the next pitch reaches the batter unless that runner was already fully committed to stealing the next base before the pitcher is in such postion. Fully committed means the runner makes continuos movement, without stopping, towards the next base. If at any point the runner comes to a stop that is not considered to be a full committment and the runner shall not be allowed to advance" We are having a problem with runners getting off third and staying there (like a lead off) advancing a step then stopping and advancing a step or two again then stopping even though pitcher has ball on mound on plate and catcher is in catchers box. We have taught the pitcher that the runner must go back, because of rule 7.13 but some umpires let them stay there leading off and keep threatening the steal, and sometimes they run on in to home and the umps let it stand.
I stole home to win our by one point, 12 to 13, when the pitcher over threw third which I was on. He threw it past third to the fence which was about 2 to 2 1/2 yards away.
+Funny Moments and Videos Here is why the pitcher over threw third. I'm 13 and about 5 foot 10 and the third base man was about maybe 5 foot 1. I was taller than him and he was standing a little behind me. I so the pitch get in the motion to throw the ball to third and went back. By then I was basically in front of the third base man, note he was on the back of the bag near the dug out so it was his fault. So the pitcher had to throw it over me and the base man wasn't ready to catch it and mist the ball.
Too much wiggle room. It depends 100% on the ump and his/her definition of 'ready.' Worse... there is no penalty for blatantly leaving too soon, and *worst* ...it is too easy to steal a call from an ump who is not paying enough attention. The only rule that works? Return to base, and no stealing, from the time the _catcher_ controls a pitch to the time the next pitch crosses the plate (i.e., treat a cleanly-caught pitch like a foul ball). Anything else is far too open to interpretation.
When I start running to second base the catcher launched the ball to first base. I was confused. The ball went passed the first basemen and they missed the throw to third. Then I scored. But the next time up to bat I I got hit in the head by a pitch. Likes = how many brain cells I lost

in usssa you can lead and steal all you want. pitchers do just fine and runners get thrown out occasionally. I love pick a runner off.

catcher wasnt looking so he isnt ready to receive, I like ready to receive as in if i throw a baseball at you, you would be able to catch it with ease

It is not a stolen base if there is a pass ball. Simply because it is an error on the defense, not a steal by the runner

In our league lead off are permitted, I never could figure out why others did not, now I know
I was just fast as all hell! And putting pressure on means a lot of missed throw downs resulting in being on third or even home

It is super good for me, or it is luck, I use the final one, the pitcher overthrow second and I go three and home because I steal at 2.63 seconds
