Imran Khan: It's a total crackdown on my party | Conflict Zone

  • Pakistan's former prime minister, Imran Khan, who has been out of power since April 2022, says he's an outsider. Khan pointed to what he called two corrupt families of his political opponents and a military that has played an oversized role in Pakistan's politics, including military rulers who imposed martial law. Citing the nearly 180 criminal charges filed against him over the last year, Khan said that if not in jail, he plans to contest the country's next general election but says the current government has arrested some 10,000 party workers and that its "entire leadership is underground or in jail."
Will they even let us contest it, he asked in an interview with DW's Tim Sebastian.
Khan said he had never had any criminal case against him until the age of 70, and that the government has been conducting a "total crackdown" against his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. Khan speculated about upcoming elections, telling Sebastian that “the Army is entrenched in the political system."
Khan also dismissed criticism of his welcoming of the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan, saying good relations with Kabul are important for Pakistan regardless of who is in power.

If the Democratic Party here in America began mass arresting Republican leaders, what recourse is available to the party and to the parties' followers? Khan's party won over 75% of the vote in 2022; and he's guaranteed to win the election if he is able to run.

When someone tries to justify current major atrocities or violations of human rights by comparing them to previous minor atrocities, it's important to clarify that each incident should be evaluated independently based on its own circumstances and severity.
Here are some key points to consider:
    1. **Severity and Impact**: The level of harm and suffering inflicted by different events can widely vary. Major atrocities or violations of human rights often have far-reaching consequences, affecting large numbers of people and causing severe physical, psychological, and emotional damage. Comparing these to minor incidents can trivialize the suffering of the victims.
    2. **Non-Justification of Wrongdoing**: Just because an atrocity was committed in the past does not make it acceptable for similar or worse actions to occur now. Each act of violence or violation of rights is wrong in itself, regardless of what has happened before. The focus should be on preventing such incidents, learning from past mistakes, and promoting peace and justice.
    3. **Legal and Ethical Considerations**: From a legal perspective, each case is evaluated based on the laws and regulations applicable at the time of the incident. From an ethical perspective, it's widely accepted that all forms of violence, cruelty, and violations of human rights are inherently wrong. Justifying a major atrocity by comparing it to a minor one is ethically and legally unjustifiable.
    4. **Human Rights Are Universal**: Human rights are inherent to all individuals, regardless of nationality, sex, ethnicity, religion, language, or any other status. These rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Any violation of these rights, regardless of the scale, is unacceptable.
    5. **Responsibility and Accountability**: Those who commit atrocities or violate human rights should be held accountable, regardless of the scale of their actions. Comparing current major atrocities to past minor ones can shift the focus away from the need for accountability and justice in the present.
    6. **Progress and Improvement**: As a society, we should strive to learn from our past mistakes and to make continuous improvements in how we treat each other. Accepting major violations because minor ones happened in the past goes against this principle of progress and improvement.
In sum, while it's important to acknowledge all forms of atrocities and human rights violations, using minor past incidents to justify or downplay major current ones is neither ethically nor logically sound. Each incident should be addressed separately, with the aim of ensuring justice, accountability, and the prevention of future violations.

"You don't have any principles?" - Why are the Taliban in power? Because of Pakistan? Or are they in power because the USA allowed if not encouraged the Taliban to take back control?
If the USA acts in complete disregard of what they proclaim to be their principles, why should a Pakistani prime minister act out? Whether Khan had condemned or complimented the Taliban does not change anything in Afghanistan, but it has effects in Pakistan.
The USA could have defended women rights and freedom in Afghanistan at a time when they were in complete control over it. They could have organised their departure in a way that would have allowed their puppet regime to either participate in power or to create a smoother transition that is not defined by machine guns on the streets. Instead, they left the Taliban complete freedom to act in these "negotiations" prior to their departure and did not even foresee how little support their government had both with the people and their own military.
Women are no more or less free just because the west or any politician condemns oppression or send their thoughts and prayers. Each and every western government condemned Russia and China and then they do business as usual with them. If Khan had condemned the Taliban, all that would have created is more tension with Pakistani who are related to or sympathizing with the Taliban. It would not have helped Afghan women and it would also not have gotten Khan any credits with the west.

I agree, i am fail to understand whatever is happening between Afghans & Americans, why usa always want the rest of the world to defend their actions by putting their international relationships at steak.
Right now, in the Ukraine & Russia war, these journalists want every other country to take sode of USA/UKRAINE. why a country can be neutral and think about their own interests. Why you have forced everyone in the world to take side to ingnite more hatred. A developing country who crippling with poverty and unemployment, USA & these journalists are playing this gake of taking side in war. It's an inhumane act. Please be kind to people. Every action should be towards peace.

A very hard and critical interview which Imran khan gave to DW. It is need to understand the last question critically, because it is true that western countries see the events, wherever in the world, in their own interests. If these events favour their strategic interests then they raise the voice at every possible forum. It stands to be evident from last 70 years history of the world, after WWII, they did only protect their strategic interests. For specimen; The USA did support Taliban against USSR in the Afghanistan in the cold war era. Beacuse it was in US and it's Allies' interest. After breakdown of USSR in 1990s, US announced the war on terror, in post 9/11, against Afghan Taliban govt to protect his interests in the name of Terrorism. I think, this is quite suffice to explore the mala fide intentions and nefarious designs by the US and western countries.

I thought that the questions that were asked were very good questions. However, right or wrong, it seemed to me that there might be an agenda to the questions. Because it seemed to me that it could be asked, was the tone of questioning put in such a way as to push people towards thinking that he’s a bad guy? Subliminally? Or not so Subliminally…
In a court of law, should Kahn have said, “Your honor, I would like to declare the interviewer as hostile.” ?
I don’t know, but that kind of question was in my head while watching this. With that said, I want to repeat what I said at the start… I thought the questions were very good.

It's not the first time of Khan with Tim. Trying to understand what's going on in Pakistan from Baltic state is quite difficult. Thanks to challenging questions of Tim, I have arrived at evolving conclusion that Imran Khan is lesser of two evils (the primary being the current establishment).
Would welcome corrections, especially from Pakistanis.

Right after creation of Pakistan India was shown as our sworn enemy and taking advantage of that military quickly took over every institution in Pakistan and made it a security state, they made political parties they broke political parties directly or indirectly they were always in power, the only difference now is that people are not accepting their rule anymore,

It would be shameful to even compare Imran Khan with the criminals and crooks imposed on Pakistan. Leaders like Khan are born once in a century. People do not view him only as a good person. People view him as the ONLY HOPE...! People of Pakistan know this guy for 50 years since he started playing for the country. This guy would be remembered among the same ranks as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King..!

Military establishment is having its power challenged for the first time in history. Imran has proved himself the ultimate popular leader which the current establishment is unable to counter. Due to this tussle, economy is in shackles, democracy is non existent and human rights are violated in the broad day light. Military establishment is afraid of elections as I will definitely bring Imran back into power with thumping majority. As this drama unfolds, we the people remain the sole loosers here.
