  • The deaths of two experienced Florida divers is prompting new calls to close a well-known cave diving site known as Eagles Nest. The cave has been called the Mount Everest of the sport and draws divers from around the world. Manuel Bojorquez speaks to the father of one of the men killed in the weekend tragedy.

    Experienced cave diver since 1992, dove Eagles Nest numerous times. Way beyond the scope of even most cave divers. A deep, extreme cave. Cave STARTS at 200', shallow downstream hovers around 225-230', not much to see, most divers opt for the deeper upstream, 250-275+. Not a dive for air. Gas training/diving should be required. My opinion, maybe 10% of even trained cave certified are qualified for Eagles Nest, it requires a tech level beyond just cave training.

      @@baddie1shoe I wouldn't go as far as to say no problem, because anything can happen unexpectedly that you didn't think could happen, that's why it's so dangerous, because there's no way straight to the surface when something does go wrong. I'm a certified diver, I was certified back in 1986, and I know that you just never know what can happen. I'm sure that Edd Sorenson was the one to get these guys out, I believe I seen this before and that Edd Sorenson was the one who retrieved their bodies, he's usually the one who does. Edd Sorenson is an incredible diver, he's gotten divers out of places that nobody else could, he's the best of the best, and when the most skilled divers can't get them out, they call Edd Sorenson to get them out! I'd really like to meet him some day! RIP to these two divers who lost their lives! 😔⛪🌸

If not, then there's absolutely no tips I can give you other than to get certified first, and if you are already certified, then you should have been trained properly by your dive instructor. It's in a National Wildlife Refuge. Nobody is getting sued over it being open, the risks are clearly marked on multiple signs right next to the only access to the pond the cave is in and it's a good 15-20 minute drive off the main road on dirt trails through the refuge to get there.

Yet I got my SCUBA open water certification, and I did do dive to 20 meters and hope to do my advanced certification as well and dive up to 30-40 meters. I've managed to overcome my fears somewhat, and as long as the water is very clear and the bottom isn't like a 100 meters below me, I'm fine.

    My condolences to the families, this is a very sad accident. I'm also truly impressed by the comments of Mr. Rittenmeyer.
    Cave diving is no more dangerous than any other involved sport like mountain climbing, sky diving, mountain biking.
    Each day hundreds if not thousands of successful cave dives are performed in many parts of the world. Like in other sports fatalities are very rare. The proper training and gear is extremely important, as is the experience to dive advanced caves like these. Still accidents can happen, but again this is a very rare exception. Demands for closing this cave make about as much sense as closing the beaches.

    • @dirtyblond2332
      @dirtyblond2332 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Oliver J Albrecht - I agree, and am saddened these two young men lost their lives. However, I disagree it is no more dangerous than other activities as you listed. The complex nature of deep diving, gasses used and the bodies reaction to them at various depths, and the confined and overhead enviroment that prevents a CESA all combine to make it much more dangerous in comparison in my opinion.
      That said, they were trained and experienced, and something went wrong that was simply beyond the ability to overcome. It happens, and is part of the assumed risk. Anyone thinking this was safe should rethink their position. I am not advocating not doing it, or banning it, but want people to know the risks are very real and very high, and the cost of diving technical dives as this can ultimately cost someone their life. It is a risk one must be willing to assume and somewhere, someone will draw the short straw occasionally.

    • @tenzinsmith7991
      @tenzinsmith7991 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dirty Blond Risks are mitigated through proper training and experience. This cave plunges hundreds of feet deep, putting it out of the reach of most cave divers. Only those who are trimix trained beyond full cave and who have over 100 logged cave dives should be at this site. In classes divers are taught proper procedures and redundancies for any conceivable emergency. Every so often a trained diver may go beyond their limits or not follow their training, but this is the case with participants in any other activity listed here. There will always be those types of people, no matter the activity.

    We need to rehearse and practice every "what if" situation routinely. I work critical care daily but they still have us review, prove and renew our CPR skills every 2 years or we don't keep our license. I think it would be wise to annually have review classes to maintain Rescue and Cave certifications. Especially review / practice emergent situations.

    This is also so sad!!! There is a cavelike water hole, well it’s not a hole. It’s wide, and the bottom has never been found. It’s called the Blue Hole of Santa Rosa. Many divers have attempted to find what seems like an endless bottom. When we kids we’d jump off the rocks into the water, never realizing the dangers of this “water cave”. There is also the Carlsbad caves in Southern NM that are amazing!!!! And worth the trip to see them! There are still caves around the Huge Entrance into the many, many caves, that haven’t been touched.....
    Maybe in finding all those items under water could suggest a flood occurred?

      I'm not a cave diver, but I ran out of air at ~70 feet. What happens is you take one breath out and when you try to breath in, literally nothing happens, almost as if the diaphragm is stuck in the regulator (if you know the feeling).
      At this point, you go into panic mode, and from there adrenaline kicks in. You stop even trying to breath. In my case, I was owd so there was a surface I could get to. Since my lungs were empty, no risk of an embolism, just go to the surface as fast as possible, hope you don't go into deco (I didn't).
      For them, they'd not have that option which is why cave diving is so so so so much more dangerous.

    And did they close Mount Everest, because people die there? And did they stop skydiving? No they did not. Because the world should not be "closed for your safety". But actually - If people wanted to REALLY stop needless, indiscriminate deaths they could opt to stop traffic. Modern traffic is a slaughterhouse by comparison to any of the above.

      I strongly agree. I personally am a coward who can't swim. I snorkeled holding a buggy board after receiving careful training and attention. Don't know why I wrote this.
      Point is, I can't abide by the closure of natural, wild places of beauty and personal challenge because of tragedy that happens.
      I am guessing that non swimmers were the ones demanding closure.

    Eagles nest is one of the most deadly caves out there it nearly kills everyone that steps inside it even trained professional divers have died looking for bodies in that cave and apparently there is a tunnel at the bottom of the cave that has current flowing through it and so if you were to slim down to that tunnel and the current would have pull you in you will never be able to come out that hole and it's over 900 ft down there under that tunnel and that's at the bottom of eagles nest that's how a lot of bodies have gone missing in there because they get down to the bottom and then the current that's going through that hole sucks the bodies through that hole and no divers have ever gone in there or ever going to because it's impossible to come back out

  • @jackmarshall3214

    Didnt mention whether they were on OC or CC. Much more people die on rebreathers percentage wise and its not even their fault. A co2 hit from a malfunctioning scrubber can knock you out within a minute. If trained, OC cave diving is pretty safe these days. Especially in florida where the caves have minimal silt. Those statistics of people dying come from before the 2000s. More people die from heart skiing (41.5 a year on average). Less than 3 cave divers die each year. Keep it in perspective. Everything is dangerous.

      @jackmarshall3214 Those two numbers of deaths that you quote don't "keep it in perspective". Knowing a number of people who ski every year compared to the number of people who cave dive every year, and then working out what percentage of them died, would.
