Huh… this really does help with characterization. Despite being banished and so forth - it’s as though he understands the purpose of his exile, and simply wishes to reclaim him former rule, and free is former wife.
Yeah but this is cut dialogue and doesn’t reflect his real character much. To my understanding, he only returns to fight you as he is a warrior at heart as supported by his Armor set. He doesn’t really care about protecting the Erdtree or saving Marika, just fighting the Tarnished strong enough to burn the Erdtree, kill Demigods, and possibly have the strength to become Lord like him
This is also very noticeable in the lines he has in-game when he reverts to his Hoarah Loux identity, and I think it's intended. He was originally a warrior from probably a provincial region, and I think the implication is that his somewhat more (but not wholly) standard pronunciation as Godfrey is only an affectation that he took on when Marika made him Elden Lord, and she and Serosh 'civilized' him.
“Be proud, warrior. There is no shame in defeat to a king” “Use thy might to become Elden Lord” Godfrey just easily became my favourite character in Elden Ring.

Its hard to tell if he really loved marika, considering we know next to nothing about her personality other than she was a very manipulative scheming person. I mean i do think he did love her (idk what he saw in her tho) but i doubt she loved godfrey and if she did she still was bound to the greater will and dropped him like a bad habit. Still weird to hear him call her dearest marika.
In every church where melina talk about marika's voices, she mentioned godfrey as his "dear lord" I honeslty thinks marika still loved godfrey, and banished him to become stronger like one of the church conversation say
I imagined that Marika loved Godfrey, but for some reason, had to get rid of him. Personally, I think he was weakened by age, as ultimately, he was still mortal, and we see that eventually in the badlands, he did die, so if he was so strong in the giant war, it’s hard to believe a monster like him could be taken down by mortals, unless of course, he just lost his power over time. So, Godfrey just wasn’t permanent enough for Marika. Radagon was though. Radagon also, in my opinion, married Rennala for love, but Marika most likely held power over radagon, and radagon was most likely not as strong as Marika, so it’d be pretty easy to force him into leaving his wife. I think this is supported by radagon giving her a great rune and the amber egg, as if he was trying to lessen the pain. I believe Marika did not love radagon though, and probably just saw him as a replacement who was just good enough for the job. There isn’t much to go off of to believe that, but there is a few things. “O Radagon, Leal hound of the golden order” now, you can interpret this as a compliment, but she did basically tell him that she thought he was a loyal dog. From what I can tell, any dialogue from Marika regarding radagon is like this, and dialogue regarding Godfrey is well, sweeter and more caring. Also, I believe there is a lack of love between them, from the lacking of gifts you see from them. Generally, they seem to gift things to those they love (this isn’t always the case but it is a good way to tell). Radagon gifted Rennala with the amber egg and the great rune, radagon also gifted Miquella one of the rings of light spells. Marika gifted Godfrey (arguably) Serosh, dignity, and golden grace. Does Marika or Radagon gift anything to each other? From what I can tell, they don’t. The closest thing to this is radagon transforming Rennala’s moon-light sword into his golden order greatsword. However, we have no clue as to when he did this, so he could of just done it right after getting it, as he was still very clearly linked to the golden order after his marriage with her, and even if it was assumed it was during his Elden lord days, it wouldn’t be that hard to say Marika told him to get rid of all his ties to Rennala, so radagon did. That’d explain why radagon didn’t have a staff, as it is said radagon learned both sorceries and incantations, so why doesn’t he use them in his fight? Probably because he didn’t have a staff. Why would he not have a staff? I mean, Marika opposed Caria, so she wouldn’t want her Elden lord using Carian stuff. It wouldn’t even be too far stretched to say that Marika could have raped radagon, since radagon probably didn’t want to leave rennala based off of all of that. Marika also wanted him to get rid of all his ties to rennala, but radagon couldn’t do that fully. Marika also only seemingly got laid with him once when they got married, (excluding Messmer), while radagon had 3 kids with Rennala, and Godfrey had 3 with Marika, but they only got laid twice. So Marika probably made malenia and miquella for political purposes, not for love, unlike the other kids. Radagon also did not love Marika based off of past info, all of which points, in my opinion, to her raping him. TLDR: Marika loved Godfrey, not radagon, radagon loved Rennala, not Marika, Marika (may of) raped radagon.
