Matthew is a longtime fave of mine and my husband's... I so dig his songwriting, guitar playing and impeccable taste. Always great to meet others who appreciate his work :)
Word! A friend of mine saw him supporting Morrissey in the UK in the early 90's and bought me the Girlfriend LP. I've been a huge fan and heavily influenced by him ever since x
Matthew Sweet: a songwriter of the highest order, a living legend, a troubadour and an overall badass. I hope to meet him one day. It's people like him that actually makes America great.
As someone who discovered Matthew Sweet only recently, well after his heyday, I’m amazed at the endless succession of fantastic songs this man has put out over the years. Sifting through his back catalogue is endlessly rewarding.
Saw Matthew this Summer. He still rocks pretty hard and his band had a great sound. Have to agree with Fred in that MS is REALLY underrated and UBER talented
Wow...... half of Tears For Fears w/ Mathew Sweet................... this brings back so many memories.... the new wave days... the grungy power pop days....
Divine Intervention a la Richie Havens. Fucking Epic. I love you bro. Thank you for your music. You were the Soundtrack to my awkward 14 yr. old self back in '91. God Bless Matthew Sweet, an American treasure!
Huge fan of Matthew! Got to meet him in Bandera, Tx. at a show on his In Reverse tour. I was pretty damn drunk and did not make the most of our visit. Regret. He is a rare, deep, talented cat that deserves more praise than he gets. He was cool to me anyway, drunk or not...Class guy. TALENTED guy.
I got into Mr. Sweet with the Girlfriend album, and then purchased Altered Beast. I loved Altered Beast for how raw it was. It was darker, and the production seemed spotty, which really matched my space at the time.
I know people interpret the meaning of lyrics in different ways, but that last song really struck something deep in me since I have no belief in any deity... "Do you believe, deceive yourself?"... brilliant.
Most folks know of the Girlfriend or 100% Fun album. Imo the under rated albums are In Reverse, Altered Beast, Blue Sky On Mars, Kimi Ga Suki. In recent years I've enjoyed the songs "Push the Fellings", "Back of My Mind", and "Feel Fear".
his story about almost NOT getting signed. I lived that one. ugh. One dude decides his girlfriend needs on the roster instead of you, and nobody remembers anything a week old and that's it. you're done.
I would've enjoyed this so much more if the engineering had been better. The recording sounds like this was done at a community television station. The talent cuts through, but a little attention paid to the sound recording would've been appreciated.
@duckler2; tsk, tsk. Matthew Sweet = one of the better singer songwriters of the last twenty years here in America. Altered Beast is...a beast. Give it a listen sometime.
Aside from being an incredible song writer and interviewee...Matthew has similarities between Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Sloane from Welcome to the Basement, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It's a high stakes raffle with this guy, and the prize is big time.
perhaps the most underrated composer, writer guitar player, of the 1990's
***** Agreed

Just Jeanne I don't know how I discovered him but he is such a mismash of styles and his songs can bring you high or take you low It's all good

Truly beautiful, amazing talent. Very, very underrated; classic voice and sound.

Do you have the Goodfriend CD? it's quite a bit like that version (compared to the Girlfriend version).
Brian Miller CD?! I had the cassette tape. It did not withstand the sands of time.

Great lyrics, great voice, great guy!
Nice Interview. great to get to know this songwriting genius as a person. Very interesting.
Matthew, you're an inspiration. Thanks pal.
Thanks! We appreciate it! Please share and let people know. We are really proud of our little show.
100% Awesome!
Wow, his acoustic version of "Divine Intervention" is so good... I could TOTALLY picture Joni Mitchell doing it this way, that would be awesome! :)
My first association to different pronunciation of ``garage`` was my elementary school English teacher. From now on it`ll be Curt Smith. I love it.
I know people interpret the meaning of lyrics in different ways, but that last song really struck something deep in me since I have no belief in any deity... "Do you believe, deceive yourself?"... brilliant.
i don't believe he is an atheist. he's from Nebraska, after all. that said, the lyrics remind me of the Ugly Truth song. guys great.

Does anyone realize mathew sweet was in Austin Powers band! Great cameo! Serious note... he is awesome!
With Suzanna Hoffs!
Great songwriter. Good choice using a 12-string, fills out the sound. Voice sounds good in 2011. Really good. Some great tones on pull the trigger.👍👍
Is that a Marshall McLuhan shirt???
This has been great thanks Matthew. PS to interviewer ... Don't interrupt the guest as he's speaking.
He cannot help it - he's English.

Dude. You're mistaken. This is Michael Moore at a Michigan open mic. :)
Altered Beast is a hell of an album
Best album of all time, in my opinion.
Unique and beautiful in its starkness.
@duckler2; tsk, tsk. Matthew Sweet = one of the better singer songwriters of the last twenty years here in America. Altered Beast is...a beast. Give it a listen sometime.
Man, the music industry has changed.
Matthew sweet is my dads cousin
Matthew Sweet Then he's your cousin as well.
I can only treat myself to a listen if I had just hit the gym.
is this phillip seymour hoffman?
no
LMAO!!!!
i thought it was Michael Moore
That's not Matthew Sweet, that's Michael Moore.
+what? - Actually looks like Philip Seymour Hofffman here
*I know, right? He's still sounds great but what the heck?*
I cant help but think of *acoustic jack black*

It's a high stakes raffle with this guy, and the prize is big time.
Curt looks like Timothy B. Schmit.
Can we get a longer view of the guitar sound hole? Geez it’s not a beautiful landscape
huh?
Great interview! Curt should learn to listen more and talk less. It's called an interview for a reason. ;)
Curt cuts him off too much.
Matthew, lose some weight and get back out there. I know you can still rock and you are a GREAT songwriter.
Really..........weight equals good music? Get a life. You don't know Matthew at all.
I love Matthew Sweet.....Sick Of Myself is one of my all time faves....but damn dude....go on a diet.
Matt was awesome until...
His music is very fat.
