Gary Jules was a student of mine at UCLA. He gave me a burned CD of this song, with Mad World written on the outside of it. He gave me his album along with it. It was the month my second child was born, so I was rushing out of the classroom to take my wife to the hospital, and never listened to the song. When I finally did, I was so happy for Gary. Such a beautiful song from a great person.
He covered it, Tears For Fears originally did it.. Just saying. Great story though!!

@@67tedward Indeed. In many cases having a song covered is a sign of respect to the writer and original performer. In other cases it's a weak but well marketed karaoke performance (like most of Pop Idol/X Factor/Voice)
on reflection i dont think people realise how good tears for fears where back in the day and how the songs are still relevant today
Of course tears for fears was terrific back in the day, but this song really hit its stride when it was covered by Gary Jules for the movie Donnie Darko. If you look back at the original music video for Mad world with Tears for Fears it is good, but it's very fast-paced and something like Gary Jules' cover works a lot better with the tone and lyrics of the song.

Check out the original version by tears for fears. It'll give new perspective. The original is lively, and the cover by Jules is weary. Two sides of emotion on the same coin.

Curt smith said that Gary Jules version did more justice to the lyrics. After listening to Curt's singing Jules' version I must agree... Both singers make the song better with their own styles. Roland Orzabal wrote a song that can haunt even the coldest of hearts.
I like this version better, the uptempo original seemed off given the heavy lyrics
I think both versions went for different effects. The original juxtaposed the irony of upbeat music with dire lyrics. And that conflict is a truth of life, we are pushed to be happy when we are not. We feel glad and sad at the same time, this is life if you think about it.
Whereas the cover, went right into the lyrics, and went for the pure starkness of those cutting, intensely down moments that bubble up in life. A song without peer for the end of Donnie Darko.
I am more for the original due to that wonderful beat.You have both sides here,the slower version and the original.Both are absolutely amazing.
Guess that's another factor that makes this song so fantastic... I much prefer the original version, I genuinely think of a mad world with the original, not a sad world!
It's such a unique cover that it feels like it was re-written.

When two very different artists can interpret a song and both sound wonderful…that says something incredible. When the two artists perform it together and then hug each other after…it brought tears to my eyes.

Hi - actually Roland wrote it but it did not suit his voice. He asked Curt to sing it instead and it worked! Roland's voice is more aggressive whereas Curt's has a vulnerability to it. There's a similar contrast between McCluskey & Humphreys of OMD. Cheers!

Ironically, I shed a tear, listening to Tears for Fears. That song is so hauntingly beautiful to me. Still just as relevant today as it was in 1983! What a great band.

Gary Jules version really made me relisten to all of Tears for Fears. The lyrical content is sooo much deeper than I thought.

How Curt "passed the baton" to Gary-to reintroduce this hauntingly beautiful song from Tears for Fears. No jealousy, No one upmanship-two creatives working together in tandem. RESPECT. And this is coming from a 63 year old grandmother of four-sick and tired of black young rappers slaying each other in the streets.
I love how Gary's face lights up with happiness that Curt sang with him on this. Its such a passing of the torch/approval of the use of the song in a way from one artist to another. Its badass

Nobody would ever forget the Roland and Curt collaboration of Tears for Fears to bring this beautiful song into existence. It is a beautiful thing when the creators of the songs condone and in fact encourage the continued life of their songs through other artist or the general public. Thank you Tears for Fears and all who gracefully exhibit this song and the works of other artist.

Curt is such a sweet man, adores his kids. The TFf guys have been super generous with this song, and I love that this song I loved a million years ago has sort of carried on through the years. Kudos to them and Gary for excellent music.

This is emotional in several ways, not just for the song. Seeing an artist that had a hit with a cover, finally get a chance to perform the song together with the original artist after several years - that is an incredible experience. And it shows, Gary seems to be holding back his emotions and just enjoying Curt singing... Wonderful clip! (and the song is still beautiful...)

Tears for fears was a band that was ahead of it’s time. Roland Orzabal wrote this song and it’s so meaningful today. He and Curt made magic.
Curt Smith on "Psyche" playing himself was one of the funniest things I ever saw. And if you are wondering, he has a great sense of humor and can still bring it on the singing side also.
Roland's dance in the video is pretty much amazing as his song writing. I remember first falling in love with the song, and later when I saw the video I fell Head Over Heels (pun intended) for that awesome, awesome dance. I can't hear Mad World without imagining it!
Damn Gary is so spot on that when he begins singing it just sounds like the album version being played and thats rare for a singer to sound the same live as after numerous studios takes with eq'ing and editing
It's funny how Gary sings this like a suicide anthem, whilst Curt's rendition is a gentler and more innocent reflection on life.

This was a great song right from the start, right from the original version. I think it took Gary Jules to unlock the true emotion behind it.

Thought Gary Jules take of Mad World was easily the best version of the song ( I think Roland and Curt think that as well ) but this is the first time I've heard this and.......well it's just mind blowing. Curt Smith had said once after hearing Gary's version that it did more justice to the lyrics (or something along those lines) and I agree. Gary's voice and tone give me chills everytime which I like whereas the TFF version almost makes me laugh due to Roland dancing in the background. But I can't believe after all the years this has been up on YT that I just now came across it. This is legenday to see them do it together.

This song is a masterpiece. A truly depressing yet inspiration piece of music. I came across this song after a failed suicide attempt. I finally realized all those people who used to tell me that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Now I truly understand what they meant. There is so much to live for and I will make sure to never let my emotions get the best of me. Thank you Gary Jules. We indeed live in a mad world but we must fight through in order to seek out the hidden gem

you can hear Curt Smiths... longevity and experience in that voice. I ran his original on one monitor and this version on the other.. his voice has aged like wine

Just beautiful, it's a song that haunts you, cause there's a rare truth that it presents. The band tears for fears were in their early twenties when they wrote and recorded this, now their matured men. I'm thrilled that Curt Smith sang it with Gary Jules, I prefer this version from the original. This version is full of soul, and pure angst, a rare song that needs no interpretation, cause it's so simple, so pure, right into the heart.
I would not have spoken one word differently, who really cares about the mic or what ever the other bitching was about! This was, is, and always will be an exquisite, telling, series of what makes each of us more than just another animal. Simple perfection!!!
What I like is the fusion of the voices between past and present. The originator and predecessor .
Back in the day I had this song on a 45 rpm record but loved playing it at 33 and one third rpm. This version sounds like the slower version.

I feel Curt is being hated for singing this, but hey, he's the original singer. I love both versions, although my favorite will always be the original, Curt's voice just melts me, and here he adapted his voice to make the song sound more serious and deep. What a beautiful song.

For me the tears for fears original version feels like a crazy dystopian trip, and the Gary Jules one brings it down to simple dark depression but with mercy.

I don't think Curt Smith always got the recognition for his contribution to Tears for Fears. Roland is clearly a hugely talented guy but some bands are larger than the sum of their parts. Great cover.

Lorrie Smith well...Roland Orzabal wrote it. Curt didn't have any part of it except he let him sing it. Roland wrote all their stuff, he was the talent in that band!

Roland was a talented songwriter, but Curt Smith is talented in his own way too as a vocalist ... Remember this, they tried to record Mad World with Roland singing but its was unsatisfactory, but when Curt sang it , quote, "suddenly it sounded fabulous" ..
Curt's harmony with Roland's vocal made TFF really successful because Roland's voice alone is kind of too one-sidedly hard and not so sensuous, Curt added the critical element in the vocals giving many TFF songs a sensuous dimension that made the vocals powerful and sensuous at the same time ... You can feel Curt Smith's presence being critical in the biggest success of songs like Shout, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Mad World etc..
You can tell there is a lacking in all of Roland's solo efforts after Curt left, all the songs are not as sensuous, not as interesting ...

I got my first car at 18 and was enamored by TFF, blasting their music from my 77 Buick Electra..Mad World didn't grab me back then, the music didn't fir. Thank the powes that be for Gary Jules tweaking it and making it the great song it evolved into. ❤

This song got me through. Years ago when my children's mother kept my kids from me. I never lowered my head. I kept it up and fought through and in the end... my children are home.
