“Stop Arming Israel”: Meet the DNC Delegates Who Unfurled Banner During Biden Speech

During President Biden’s speech on the first night of the DNC, protesters briefly unfurled a banner that read “Stop Arming Israel,” before it was wrested away by convention staff. We speak to three members of the group Delegates Against Genocide who organized and carried out the action: Esam Boraey, a human rights activist and delegate from Connecticut; Florida DNC member Nadia Ahmad; and progressive Jewish activist Liano Sharon, an elected delegate from Michigan. “We were there specifically to confront President Joe Biden,” says Ahmad, explaining why the protesters chose to disrupt Biden’s speech. “He’s the one who can stop this genocide by picking up the phone and making a phone call, and he has chosen not to do that.”

I’ve yet to hear condemnation of Hamas for their heinous and barbaric attack on Oct 7. I’ve yet to hear condemnation of Hamas for their use of rape as a weapon of war. I’ve yet to hear condemnation of Hamas for using people as human shields, in flagrant violation of the rules of war. And I’ve yet to hear a substantial explanation of what Israel’s response should have been.
I agree that Netanyahu has continued to pursue to ground war partially to protect his own gross ambition. I agree that I am warfare cannot be pursued surgically, and that civilians are killed.
Israel is a recognized nation state. Palestine needs to have a recognized state. They both need to coexist. Yet the propaganda that Hamas supporters foment helps their cause not at all.

When Biden first began this policy and we started to see the live streams of what was really happening, I felt bad for my Democrat friends, because I thought "it must be horrifying to see the president representing your party facilitating this g-cide, blocking the UN efforts to stop it, cutting off UNRWA funding... seeing the universities, hospitals, refugee camps devastate, the kidnappings and torture in the Israeli prisons, the history of the Nakba, etc. I really felt compassion toward their plight. Then I began to realize they weren't even phased by it, and I can't believe these are the people I thought I knew. I was never a joiner, so I wasn't wearing the Blue shirt, but I pretty well voted blue down the line, and I live in Texas, a red state. So I know how bad the GOP can be. But in a million years I never thought the Dems would actually support what I'm seeing in Palestine, but they are treating Biden like a saint, and acting like his Palestinian policy is just a little something that could be improved. I've never felt so gaslit--and that includes when Trump was in office. So that's saying something.

Nadia had to wrap the banner around her dress to smuggle the group's message of peace into the convention. This detail made me so so sad. No free speech and no campaigning for peace is allowed. They want everyone to be quiet about the genocide.

Our only viable strategies at this moment are 1) fight for voting reform (I like STAR voting, but ranked-choice is better than nothing) 2) move the Overton window to the left from inside the DNC (seems to be working, slowly but surely)

The very fact that other delegates covered and took the banner down shows that their message needs to be seen and taken seriously. The 40,000 dead Gazans and so many more disabled deserve the message to Biden.
They haven’t officially updated that number in about four months so you know it is at least double. And there has been estimates as high as 200,000 dead. Entire multigenerational families wiped out.
