Southern Rock was one of the best genres ever.
It was Peter Frampton they were supporting,not the first time they they put on a show the chief act couldn't follow, they did it to the rolling stones at Knebworth 76 too

The Rebel Flag to them stood for what it was outside of the Confederates.
When it was reformed they stopped using it saying rhat they didn't want to offend their fans who saw it as a part of dark history.
After saying that some loved the governor they are singing "boo boo boo"
That's referencing Governor Wallace trying to prevent desegregation in schools despite Federal Law going into effect.
Neil Young later admitted he deserved the lyrical slap in the song.

Go back and listen to Steve Gaines lead after Powell's piano lead. And remember, that is live performance. Gaines did that lead live. It is a true gem. The brightness, precision and vibe of it are all sublime.
I have a suggestion. Band is Alabama song is Mountain Music. I am not a country fan but my parents used to play this album when I was little. If you haven't heard it I think you'll enjoy it. One of the few I do. 😊
You should react to their performance of "Freebird" at the Knebworth Festival where they preceded the Rolling Stones. The solos were even wilder!
OH!! Just had a request run through my head as you guys reacted to this. Steve Earle & 'Copperhead Road'. I always relate songs like that one to this. OH Joe Walsh now you say his name. LOL!!

The woman in the middle was Cassie Gaines, her and her brother Steve both died in the crash along with Ronnie.
This is just so nostalgic for me. I'm not (nor ever have been) a big fan of this genre, but my dad listened to all sorts when I was little. I was a daddy's girl and often mooched on the sofa when he played his tunes. Ahh, memories ❤

@chueysmama2622 I'm the middle of three girls (no brothers), and I'm kind of the favourite But that's most likely because I've never really caused any worry/problems. My elder sister has complex medical needs, so worries us all constantly, and my younger sister is bipolar, with all the crappy stuff that comes with it. I'm the 'sensible' one, apparently. They really don't know me at ALL 🤣🤣🤣

Guys this was a classic ! Just my opinion, but late 70’s was the winding down of greatest time in music ! The 50’s, 60’s, and the 70’s produced some of the best artists and some of the greatest music ! There’s that song that memorialized a sad day in music history 1959, “ the day the music died “ , but I think the late 70’s into the 80’s was the second time the music died !

You said it, "Iconic Song". I'm pretty sure I've never heard this live version with those solos before. So, Great Choice, Chaps!! The lyrics _"Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers"_ refers to the remarkable "studio house band" working at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama for Rick Hall. Wikipedia says they backed _Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Leon Russell, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rod Stewart, Bob Seger and The Staple Singers.①_
There was a fascinating documentary about "Muscle Shoals" on terrestrial TV, mid 2010s. Wikipedia has the gist: _They were masters at creating a southern combination of R&B, soul and country music known as the "Muscle Shoals sound" to back up black artists, who were often in disbelief to learn that the studio musicians were white._ ① They became so noted and respected they attracted artists like The Rolling Stones.
The documentary said they recorded hundreds of successful records, singles and whole albums. Wikipedia says _"... these musicians, individually or as a group, have been associated with more than 500 recordings, including 75 gold and platinum hits." ①
IIRC, the documentary also included "The Muscle Shoals Horns". Wikipedia says _"... they began recording together at the FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals in the late 1960s, and performed on 300 albums, by musicians including Bob Dylan, B.B. King, and Elton John, often working with the musicians of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section."_ ②

I remember Neil Young's "Southern Man" (less so "Alabama"), so I wondered what Neil Young had to say about Lynyrd Skynyrd's reaction. Wikipedia says: _'In Young's 2012 autobiography Waging Heavy Peace, he commented on his song: "My own song 'Alabama' richly deserved the shot Lynyrd Skynyrd gave me with their great record. I don't like my words when I listen to it. They are accusatory and condescending, not fully thought out, and too easy to misconstrue."'_ ③
It's also interesting that Merry Clayton (famous for singing on the anti-war "Gimme Shelter", my favourite Rolling Stones song) was very conflicted about singing on "Sweet Home Alabama". ③

Thanks G-Man for adding a ot of very interesting information and "Muscle Shoals" and what they contributed to many bands and also the Neil Young quotes.
I recently watched a fascinating documentary, I found it on Amazon Prime " 20 Feet from Stardom" all about backing singers and the contributions they made and I recall they interviewed Mick and Merry about how they met, Mick was recording "Gimme Shelter" and asked if they knew any local backing singers to add the female vocals and Merry was woken up late at night to come to the studio, in her long coat and hair net and just knocked the vocals out and also mentioned the part about not being comfortable with those lyrics, she gives her reason in the film.
We also see Lisa Fisher, who went on tour with the Rolling Stones and belted out those lyrics live on stage.
It's a great watch and highly recommended.

@@BritPopsReact Thank you! I've been meaning to watch "20 Feet from Stardom" for a while. It's 'right up my street'. I never thought to look for it on Amazon Prime. So thanks you that. II|RC a film review mentions Merry Clayton as being one of the main artists only "20 Feet from Stardom", which is why I wanted to see it.
It is thought provoking, and a little sad, how many session musicians made our music, but are rarely ever noticed. I assume partly because they were not 'part of a band'. Some were in bands, but have a massive body of work beyond that. For example, AFAICT few people know world class session drummers like Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, even Jeff Porcaro (Toto), etc. or eg. bassist like Tony Levin (King Crimson).
I knew about Merry Clayton being woken and asked to come in and sing in middle of the night. I can't remember from what. This includes her isolated vocal:

Credit to Neil Young for accepting his song "Alabama" was so bad.
I hadn't realised Peter Frampton was the headline act. 'Banning' Freebird because it was too good was quite funny. "Frampton comes Alive" was still being played in the '80s. AFAI could tell, a friend played played only that all the time in her car.
It's worth watching the "Muscle Shoals" documentary. It names same of the songs and shows covers of albums they made, the list was amazing. You'd likely know most of them. IIRC, some I'd never have guessed used session musicians.
It was a great video choice. I think I saw Freebird from that gig before you reacted, but I didn't have the gumption to watch all the clips! Your pick is a gem.

Have you tried ccr creedence Clearwater revival American werewolf in London 1980s movie the song bad moon rising is in throughout the movie also centerfield which a lot of little league baseball players know. They have a lot of great music. Love them
