Child life specialist and young patient introduce Cohen Children's new facility dog

PIX11’s Mr. G interviews child life specialist Stacy Madelmayer about a very special dog named Dutton. He's the newest full-time employee at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park - and his official title is facility dog, a unique position that Stacy says is distinct from the more commonly known pet therapy dogs. Dutton’s role goes far beyond the occasional hospital visit - he’s a full-time employee dedicated to supporting patients, families, and staff five days a week.
Dutton, a 17-month-old golden retriever-labrador mix, is already making a huge impact by comforting patients on three medical units. That includes Evelyn, a 10-year-old patient at Cohen Children's. She joined Mr. G and Stacy to share how Dutton has made her time and treatment at the hospital more enjoyable.
From assisting during medical procedures to providing emotional support in patient rooms, Dutton brings joy wherever he goes. He even stars in special events and activities to spread smiles throughout the hospital.
