    Eurovision is my passion. Eurovision was my work and I am still gladly part of the professional community of this project. I started at Eurovision 2016 as Czech Head of Delegation. Such a Eurovision story! Form Eurovision in Sweden I went to antoher ESC experience. Kiiv 2017 Eurovision. This was my first and last failiur. Sometimes you need to learn trough losing even it is not plasant. We ended up 13 in the semifinal, second best score of Eurovision Czechia back then. But after this we established ESCZ national selection format. It was mostly held online. Because of this we found Mikolas Josef who went 6th at Eurovision 2018 in Portugal. Than 11th with Lake Malawi, at Eurovision 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel.
    Eurovision story is crazy. After finding all candidates and songs (-1) for ESCZ 2020 I resigned and left the television for working freelance.
    Not to stop being part of Eurovision, I created this channel as I have an urge not to do just Eurovision Reactions from a different perspective. But also to do national selection reactions, watch others how they do their craft and also give a different approach for Eurovision fans.
    I am very glad was part of many eurovision juries. Mostly in national selection and since 2017 I was in MGP Norway, Eurovision Malta, UMK national selection Finland. Juror in Melodifestivalen 2016. Biggest national selection. Also helped Eurovision Ireland, Eurovision Estonia, Eurovision Azerbaijan and many others.
    Just amazing to be part of this community, so check my Humans of Eurovision, check my Eurovision reaction videos.

    A super explanation of why Nemo won. Experts like you on juries would have also thought it was a masterpiece. Ripping their pendant off after the end also helped. No-one else did anything like that. My worry is that the staging bar is now so high that established artists will be put off entering the contest, at least in 2025. I can’t think of a single singer from my country who could do what Nemo did.

    • @JanBors
      @JanBors  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      the staging in general is just a word. The bar is - sew the staging that your artist will shine and the song will be remembered. It can be this specific staging, it can be amazing intimate precision of French staging or simple but authentic concept like Armenia or Croatia had. There is the bar. Stagings for sure is not a reason for artists not to compete, more likely it can be the character or way, which Eurovision is going to.

    The yellow lines are one of my highlights, they show speed, and the warm yellow is the climax, after the cold blue technoid world we had, to visualize the freedom and positivity Nemo reached at the end.
    So, the yellow is absolutely needed.

      Yellow dont go well with white. I read here a very interesting reason to it. Imo it would visually work better if they prolonged it by those vertical
      lights from LED

    It's easy to see that the staging worked, but not so easy to explain why exactly. You made some excellent points on how the light, the staging and the disc helped and accentuated his performance without distracting from it. This worked much better than with a few others in the finals, like Italy's or San Marino's, where the LED pictures and holograms distracted from the "main course", or Poland's that used too many gadgets. Even Croatia could have improved by keeping the staging a bit more simple and focused on the main act. Less is sometimes more. Sliman's staging was in it's focus similar, yet very static in comparison. Nemo's staging was much more dynamic, yet still very much focused on them.

    • @JanBors
      @JanBors  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      yet both Slimane and Nemo show how simplicity (and thats not easy to achieve) is more, and also the specific dynamic of each song - both stagings excelled in this.

    It took me a few watches originally to get the meaning of the round platform and how it supports the message of the song but when I did, my appreciation of the song went beyond the music and vocals to seeing the whole package of a beautiful message emphasized by the brilliant staging. Now you added so many details that made Nemo's performance even more complex. You are right, the framing, lighting and angle-play is brilliant and someone put a lot of thinking into it. And it all works because of the perfect timing of Nemo, the light production and the Men in Black who ran tirelessly around the platform and kept turning it 😂 I mean it's really well thought out and executed by the team. And of course, Nemo is amazing to maintain vocal and breath control while doing a complete core workout 👏👏👏 So, thank you for this analysis, it was truly en-light-ening 😂❤

    Thank you very much for your masterclass! I really enjoyed it, you were on point regarding the staging. There are two points in the performance I want to mention, where I think that your analysis could be (?) a little different if you were taking into consideration the lyrics and the story behind the song as well (to my humble opinion, maybe I am wrong of course, I am not an expert).
    1. At the begining of the bridge of the song, where Nemo is trying to move the platform so it can start spinning for the first time, the effort most likely is real as you mentioned. I believe this was intentional because they wanted to show the real struggle of the artist to find themself. I mean, they could have found an easier way to start spinning the platform, but that was the point in keeping it that way.
    2. When Nemo is spinning around fast singing in the style of opera, I understand why the platform spinning the opposite way disturbed you. Yet again, I think it was intentional, in order to show that the artist is going against the flow, finally finding themself (that's also why Nemo is singing in this way at this point, they feel free after discovering themself).
    Keep up the nice videos, thank you.

    • @JanBors
      @JanBors  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Very nice! Thx! I also received one amazing point which is the principle of the platform being as a switch - 1 and 0 and the spining is everything in between! I think meaning wise there should be a different masterclass. But I like those as such easter eggs, not in you face. Kinda makes you focus on brilliant show and always to find something new later withou being disturbed. I prefer it, as it is clever and fresh rather than stagings, which want to say it all. Never rly works in TV.

    I love how this staging is a masterclass in elegant, yet exurbant restraint and simplicity. Also, I love brilliant videovisuals (I'm a trained Motiondesigner, so....) but this staging show how absolutely well thought-out "classic" lighting (the timeless classiness and depth, as you describe it) can tell a story much better than any "narrative" or "narratively decorative" visuals! I was live in the arena and I'm also a stage/lighting designer and, geeeeeez, I was mesmerized by the programming and fantastically exact movement of the fixture rigs - the boxes and the long rectangle rigs that do those framing lines by shooting the light at a perfect angle, just centimeters, across the boundaries of the rig - it was meticulously done! Also, one of the main narrative lines is "between the 0s and 1s" (between fixed gender roles for Nemo or between any societal fixed roles, everyone else finds themselves torn between) is almost always the leading narrative for the lighting and staging: the tipping of the platform left and right until a rotating balance is found on top, the strobing lights coming from left and right, the up and down, the steep hike up and the cruel tumbling down, the circular surfing...every little detail drives the narrative home. Ah, such a feat! Thanks for your analysis, as coming from a similar trade, I thoroughly enjoyed it and especially your endearing Czech English!

    Great video, really enjoyed your analysis!
    One function of the platform was not mentioned, because you focused on the technical aspects, which is fair enough… but I also really like how it’s used as a metaphor for the meaning of the song. At first, when ‘he’ is still struggling with ‘his’ identity, it acts like a seesaw, which could be seen as the binary world: either up or down, either boy or girl. But in the finale, when Nemo has come to terms with their identity, it stays horizontal, and they even surf on it, showing control of their situation. Just another little thing that adds to the brilliance of this whole stage concept 🙂

    • @JanBors

    I also love how brilliantly the staging complements and enhances the lyrics.
    For instance, when the lyrics mention "Like ammonites, I just gave it some time," having Nemo imitate a clock on the disk is a clever way to visually represent the passage of time. The disk moving up and down as a metaphor for binary code (0 and 1) adds another layer of meaning, hinting at the binary genders (female, male).

    The staging and lighting supports the story, too. At first they are in the binary world. There are sharp shadows on their face when the other side of has light. Black or white. The plate also moves only up and down.
    But when they find their kingdom come, there are circkle movement and yellow.

    As good as the staging was for Nemo - and it was excellent; I'd argue that it was somewhat overshadowed by the staging used by Bambie Thug. For me that was astounding - and the best staging of the night. It was like going to the theatre to see a mix of ballet and Opera.
    As for the rest - I'd say Georgia's staging was impressive, as was Ukraine's; and also Norway's - yes Norway's. The use of lighting as if to indicate the northern lights, while showing images of Norwegian forests and lakes was very effective.
    For me the three best voices of the night were Slimane (France), Raiven (Slovenia), and the lead singer of Gåte (Norway).

    4:11 No, enough of this nonsense. Enough. The winner of this year's esc is a guy. A guy who for some reason thinks half the continent must now call him a "they/them" or something just because he puts on a dress. When this Nemo goes to a doctor, the doctor will write in his documents that Nemo is a guy. If he feels like anything else, it's his private thing! If he wants to be called something, he can want it as much as he wants, but he has no right to force an entire continent to call him something he is not. I couldn't care less, because I comment on what I see. The same way he wants me to call him something else, the same way I want to call him a guy who freaked out. 👍. That's it.

      Girl, that's a lot of words about something that does not harm you in anyway. There are multiple cultures around the world that have always recognized more gender identities than just a man or a woman - they have their own names and pronouns and they have often been considered to be very special, wise, even divine people. They exist whether you want it or not. Also for example in my language every single person is a gender-neutral "they", you included. And if you speak English, you already use a singular "they". It really is super easy to accept and respect people as they are.
