The thing I find so enchanting about Kia Labeija is where everyone else seems to always be trying so hard, and throwing every bit of themselves right at your fucking face (which is a good thing, don't get it twisted, lol), Kia simply 'is' every gesture, there's such grace in her presence even when she does really twisted shit - she exists on a level of fierceness that in my humble but well versed opinion is un-fucking-reachable. I don't just see poses or categories - I see fucking MOMENTS - like as if for a split second a fabulous 80's B&W Evangelista pic from Paris Vogue I gagged over in art school and had on my wall collage in my room JUMPS THE FUCK OUT - how the hell does she DO THAT?
1) These "Spotlight on" Vogue artists are really amazing, its something different to see someone vogue alone, on the street and just to be in their own world. 2) The locations are fantastic, theyre iconic while at the same time seemingly new and fresh, the best for me had to be the Carousel spinning in the background as She moved as well. 3) I also think its very ( its no shade ) but the people walking behind ( normally non POC ) stare with such curiosity as they pass, but never stop long enough to get more than a taste, its almost as if they're afraid to become associated with that they see by looking too long. These videos are spectacular and i hope you guys have many many more in store for us, keep up the amazing work !
Kia's style is I'd say largely what is termed the "Old Way" and it's essentially what she said in the video. Its a dance assembled out of lines and geometry (awkward and not) of the body. The old way vogue is called such because it supposed to be reminiscent of the magazine title and every count of the beat rests on a pose. I'm glad she's young and serving the old way. As am I. What's often seen among the younger kids is the new way which is based on dramatic movements and stunts. It's artistic and you definitely have to have some talent to do it I just like oldway a lot more. The grace and cleanliness and lends to the poise of the dance but it can also be very cunt. What I love about all vogue is that it takes on a facture or personality with every other person and so it's organic and evolves. WerQ Kia. WerQ Labeija xoxoxo
