Drop a Hispanic last name and your state in Mexico in the comments if you'd like to learn about the history of it. I'm working on full length videos for names from each state.

Loving these videos. Can’t wait to make some time to research. I have 3 names I really want to dig deep for. My Abuela’s maiden name, Rico from Purepero, Michoacán , my abuelo’s, Contreras also Purepero, Michoacán . But my last name, Salas is of much interest for me. My dad was from Bellavista, Nayarit. He has a very interesting story. His dad died when he was 3 so the Salas family took him in but then was stolen by his mom and never heard about his family until recent and he is 77 years old.

People used to get the name of the Saint under the day they were born (i.e. Cervantes' name was Miguel because he was born the day of San Miguel ) they didn't celebrate the birthday so much but rather the day of the Saint.
Still in Spain we they celebrate both Saint and Birthday days.

I've been studying my heritage and from what I've learned. My mother is Morales Licea from Tlazazalca Michoacan. Grandpa Spaniard and grandma purepecha. It's hard though because being a mestizo is not fun because I feel like we're are not accepted to either side. Like an outsider. On my dad's side I don't know anything but last names. Thank you very much for your great content! 👍 Do you happen to have any advice or would you be considering making a video in regards to how to trace your Mexican heritage? Via paperwork, I'm assuming you have to call the churches or email them or maybe some sort of national registry? There's people like me who are fluent in English and Spanish but can only trace it as far back as a great grandfather at the most.

The Filipinos introduced many cultural practices to Mexico, such as the method of making palm wine, called "tubâ",[11][12][13] the mantón de Manila,[14][15][16] the chamoy,[17] and possibly the guayabera (called filipina in Veracruz and the Yucatán Peninsula).[18] Distillation technology for the production of tequila and mezcal was also introduced by Filipino migrants in the late 16th century, via the adaptation of the stills used in the production of Philippine palm liquor (lambanog) which were introduced to Colima with tubâ.[19]
Filipino words also entered Mexican vernacular, such as the word for palapa (originally meaning "coconut palm leaf petiole" in Tagalog), which became applied to a type of thatching using coconut leaves that resembles the Filipino nipa hut.[4]
Various crops were also introduced from the Philippines, including coconuts,[20] the Ataulfo and Manilita mangoes,[21][22] abacá, rice, and bananas.
A genetic study in 2018 found that around a third of the population of Guerrero have 10% Filipino ancestry.[3]

Here from Tiktok!! Ok, so, my great grandfather emigrated to the US in the early 1900s. His name was Joseph Galvan and was born in Aguascaliente. He never gave us any info on our ancestry. I asked my mom about why he never gave us any lineage and all he ever told her was that we're Native American and that's all we need to know. We also know he was Yaqui, but when he came to California he was basically adopted by a Paiute woman so he also claimed Paiute (according to my mom). We have such a hidden ancestry and my family is struggling finding out where we came from.

    Historical records
Colonial-era Filipino immigrants to Mexico are difficult to trace in historical records because of several factors. The most significant factor being the use of the terms indio and chino. In the Philippines, natives were known as indios, but they lost that classification when they reached the Americas, since the term in New Spain referred to Native Americans. Instead they were called chinos, leading to the modern confusion of early Filipino immigrants with the much later Chinese immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Intermarriage and assimilation into Native American communities also buried the true extent of Filipino immigration, as they became indistinguishable from the bulk of the peasantry.[5][23]
Another factor is the pre-colonial Filipino (and Southeast Asian) tradition of not having last names. Filipinos and Filipino migrants acquired Spanish surnames, either after conversion to Christianity or enforced by the Catálogo alfabético de apellidos during the mid-19th century. This makes it very difficult to trace Filipino immigrants in colonial records.[5]

@@cinderwhite notice the trend here? everybody from Michocan, QTO, Zacatecas are hitting brick walls . Why? Because your guys last names weren't original last names. These regions had a lot of slavery during the Porfiriato. Many Yaquis were kidnapped from Sonora and Arizona and forced the work the mines of Zacatecas and take catholic last names.
That's why all the Central Mexicans and Southern Mexicans can easily find their genealogy record quickly.
a lot of us in central mexico have indigenious last names still like Tecocuatilzi
The Mexicans from Jalisco and Nuevo Leon can trace their lines to 1600s during French wars because they were like all european and traced.
But you guys, just don't get anywhere past the 1800s.??
I found out my surname was French but we weren't French. We took on a French surname to get land titles.
When Zapatista goons arrived in 1910 to edomex, he told my great grandpas town to change surname to a Spanish surname. But he laughed his a55 becaus he wasn't french. They never returned and we never changed our surname however some of our cousins changed surname to a Spanish one, but they also were never Spanish. They were a 100% native american community.
I suspect same thing is happening with you guys. A lot of you guys changed your surnames during the French Pastry war and during Maximliano.
French gvot was giving lots of land titles to Mexicans that would change surname to French.
In 1910 they made you guys change your surnames, and even the lebanese and arab migrants that came to mexico in 1940s.

I’d love to know some history on any of these names and how they got to where we are today. Did a DNA test and it came back 40% Indigenous to western Jalisco, 25% Spanish, 20% Portuguese. I’m wondering if finding a time frame in which Lopez or Arreola was first documented in Jalisco would help find the tribe I would belong to.

In 1849, the Spanish governor of the Philippines assigned permanent Spanish surnames to the people so he could keep track of them for tax purposes and so on. It's not unusual for 90% of the inhabitants of an island to have surnames that begin with the same letter.

    • @SandraMocache
      @SandraMocache ปีที่แล้ว

The same in Latin America, the guy in the video isn’t well informed. You couldn’t just registered with any indigenous surname. By the time they finally conquered the Mayans after 50 years of resistance the Spanish finally allowed indigenous surnames but only depending on what the Catholic Church accepted. My friend is indigenous and her family surname was rejected because it’s not within the surnames accepted by the government. So they chose another surname and in many cases through the list of accepted surnames they sometimes choose Spanish surnames, especially to avoid discrimination since having indigenous surnames got you discriminated. You look at all the Yaqui Indians and they have surnames like Martinez and Lopez.
