The title of this video is misleading. I assumed it was about dark truths relating to the musical porductons themselves, not the background of the musical stories
I find that people who aren’t really into theatre assume that these shows are just jazz hands, smiles and leg kicks (though we love to see it) when in reality, a lot of theatre is very dark and deals with a lot of taboo subject manner (depending on the time it first came out - it may have been taboo for the time but not so much now). I’m glad some of these lesser known shows like Parade, Ragtime, and The Scottsboro Boys are getting a most deserved shoutout.
Don't be blinded by the Broadway lights, every story has to have inspiration from somewhere, and more often than not, it's from some of the greatest atrocities and injustices ever committed. I was especially surprised that one based on the Scottsboro Boys existed. I'm also surprised _Les Misérables_ wasn't on the list, as it doesn't pull any punches portraying the mistreatment of the poor in Paris during the Bourbon Restoration and July monarchy. Also, that "joke" at 8:33 was cringe beyond belief.
I think the lyrics from the song Wonderful, in Wicked, best describes how we've all learned history. "A man's called a traitor or liberator. A rich man's a thief or philanthropist. Is one a crusader or ruthless invader? It's all in which label is able to persist. There are precious few at ease with moral ambiguities, so we act as if they don't exist." Remember, it's the victors who write the story that got passed down as truth. You can accuse Disney (& I'm no great supporter) and others of glossing over inconvenient truths, but that's the way history has always been told, in order to validate and justify the reasons for destroying other cities, cultures, and peoples that got in the way of whatever one leader or group wanted to do. It is still happening today and always will until mankind stops desiring what someone else has.
There is a great book called "The Girls of Murder City: Fame, Lust, and the Beautiful Killers who Inspired Chicago" by Douglas Perry. It even goes into the woman who inspired the character of the Hungarian woman who was executed even though she was innocent.
I think Cabaret should be on the list. It’s very clever in pulling you in with the sincerity of songs like “Tomorrow Belongs To Me” only for you to realise too late you are being drawn in by a Nazi song. The show displays the struggles of people knowing that the Third Reich was growing in power and that their lives were genuinely threatened. The Colour Purple also deserves an honourable mention. The struggles of domestic abuse within a segregated community is a tough sell, yet the movie and broadway show got a lot of attention.
It’s strange that “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” was overwhelmingly chastised and shut down for historical accuracies, but “Hamilton” gets universal praise and box office longevity on Broadway for historical inaccuracies.
I found it necessary to point out but Broadway is entertainment that last around 2 to 3 hours. It's not going to be able to cover every single fabric of a person's life where Legacy nor should that responsibility be placed on it IMHO.
!Fake fan alert! (JK lol we welcome you to the movie fandom! Newsies was the first movie I ever saw with Christian Bale (at age 9) and to this day may or may not still be...)
Bonnie did not kill nobody Clyde Clyde killed some people not all not all of the people there were other members in his gang Read some autobiographers and educate yourself. She was murdered when she could hardly walkI was carried everywhere by people. So yeah they did have a hard life due to taxes due to taxes government and her family and his family coming from poor people
I read the string of pearls Things I remember: Sweeney had a weird laugh and was scared of dogs Nellie forced Anthony to make pies for her Sweeney poisoned her He was arrested at the end

It's just one person's view. You don't have to like it. Your feedback is valid, but, if you want to show a different viewpoint, write your own version of a historical musical or play.

Non of them have I seen yet. But where is Kiss of the spider woman, Cabaret, Les Miserables? Too much socialism?
The title of this video is misleading. I assumed it was about dark truths relating to the musical porductons themselves, not the background of the musical stories
Right
exactly
Sameeee
It's not misleading. It's a general umbrella title. Like a lot of their video titles are.
Background stories are about the production of the musicals. Because musicals are based on these stories.

Chicago is still a great musical to listen too!🚔

@@squirrel_maya006 i think that was the point...
I am surprised that "Cabaret" and "Miss Saigon" are not on this list.
Just got to number 2 and assumed Cabaret would be number 1. How could they not have put it?
I think Six the musical should be added on this list
Oh god yes

i saw Hamilton in Detroit and it was amazing!!
Assassins: “Am I a joke to you?”
I don't know Assassins, is it by Sondheim?
@@kidkrowtaylor Yes, it’s about nine people who have made an attempt on the life of the president of the USA. Really dark, but REALLY, REALLY GOOD.
@@alexandersean4708 I heard my favorite TH-camr talk about it so I should go listen!
I think Titanic The Musical should be added to your list as well
Not even a mention of Miss Saigon??
Did not know they made musicals about Andrew Jackson, Bonnie and Clyde, and the internment of Japanese Americans.
How could you leave out Cabaret?
So basically if Jeremy Jordan was in it lol
The thing about Sweeney Todd is… it actually happened… yes… you read that right!
And here I am thinking Sondheim’s and Weidman’s “Assassins” (which is about presidential assassins) would be in this list
Daddy's Son was devastating to hear live ❤
No "Cabaret"? I'm surprised.
In Schenectady New York I saw the musical newsies and I found it really interesting
Thank god that was a performance from Ben Platt in Parade. He's great - when he's not trying to be a 20 year old with his daddys money.
How about Fiddler on the Roof? Or West Side Story?
Paradise Square seems worth a mention.
I found it necessary to point out but Broadway is entertainment that last around 2 to 3 hours.

I agree with your number one pick finally.
I was just at a bar mitzvah, and I read a plack about Leo frank who went to my temple.
No matter, still love them
*Minstrel show (is what I think they meant, not “ministerial?”)
I was hoping someone beat me to this comment. Thank you for your service.
Also, I feel like we need Ragtime revival again.
didn’t jefferson and washington inherit their slaves? i don’t think they bought anyone. slavery still sucks though
Jeremy Jordan 2 Times? ❤❤❤❤❤
I agree Cabaret would be good on this list, maybe Assassins too.
Decent video
we get it you like watchmojo you don't have to complement them on every video
When one tribe replaces the old tribe, the new tribe becomes the "indigenous."
The Sweeney Todd musical origin makes me love it even more 🥰
🎭 Glass Mask - "The Phantom of the Opera"
what about it
Was that....Christian Bale in the Newsies movie?
yep😃😃😃😃😃😃
!Fake fan alert! (JK lol we welcome you to the movie fandom! Newsies was the first movie I ever saw with Christian Bale (at age 9) and to this day may or may not still be...)
You should make top 10 times that the owl house tacked serious issues
yeah all kindergartens arent allowed recitals for child labor 😂😂😂

And I thought Newsies were catchy.😶📰
*minstral show
I actually I did newsies well the JR version
I think you mean a minstrel show, not a ministerial show.
Miss Saigon didn’t even get a mention????
i don't get why sweeney todd is on here, why not a show like cabaret?
It was little Lea Michele on 5:31?
A _"ministerial"_ show????
Who else thinks the movie version of Newsies is SO much better then the broadway version?
I read the string of pearls
Things I remember:
Sweeney had a weird laugh and was scared of dogs
Nellie forced Anthony to make pies for her
Sweeney poisoned her
He was arrested at the end

“Hamilton” is overrated. It completely ignores historical events in favor of identity politics.
It's just one person's view. You don't have to like it. Your feedback is valid, but, if you want to show a different viewpoint, write your own version of a historical musical or play.
Well I think Hamilton is beautiful. The point of Hamilton is this show the evolution of America.
andrew jackson was not a great person
