"The Greatest Showman"! The opening number and the song "From Now On". Come on!! Those folks were going HAM! Every time I hear those songs I start stomping and singing!

Considering that Mojo tends to ignore anything before 1990 I think they did a great job balancing things. But The Barn Dance is a great number. And for once La La Land wasn’t number one

IMO, that song shows the history of WWII in a nutshell. It starts off with a few voices and little by little takes in everyone. It's brilliant and one of my fave songs in the movie.
My friend was in a high school production of "Hairspray", and she joked that they should have called the final number "You can't stop to Breathe", as they were always out of breath every night! 😂🤣
That’s very true I get out of breath watching it, ne and my friends would dance to you can’t stop the beat in my basement the collapse on the floor out of breath and sweating
7 Brides for 7 Brothers Barn raising; Enchanted's Central Park scene, Hair's Central Park scene and The Harvey Girls Atchison, Topeka, and the San Jose number was one of the longest choreographed routines shot in a single shot, on the first take.
Cant believe 1968's Oliver isnt here coz istg every single one in the ensemble are classically trained in ballet and opera with the way they danced and sung. And they were a BIG ensemble.
Now wait a minute! Not even and honorable mention for anything in “All That Jazz”?! The ‘Take Off With Us’ number alone is worth a mention and the opening and closing numbers, ‘On Broadway’ and ‘Bye Bye Life’ are just phenomenal. And nothing for “Moulin Rouge” either?! WTH?! :-(
It was the first number that popped into my head when I saw the video title. Not crazy about the film but that number completely blew me away (still does- I watch the clip sometimes).
This one might need a part 2! There are so many incredible ensemble numbers out there! Also, “You go, Green Shirt Guy” was the best part of this video, IMO 😂😂😂

Like in "Hairspray" there is the woman in the yellow dress who is front and center a lot of the time, she is most likely one of the dance captains. They set the pace, and give the other dancers someone to focus on for count.
I don't think any of these don't belong here, but I was surprised to see that you missed Aquarius from "Hair," and Roxanne from "Moulin Rouge." Those are awesome ensemble performances!

I knew that "Cell Block Tango" would be highly ranked. Even though many of the women, bar one, committed petty acts of murder, the song is insanely catchy to listen to.
The first time I saw "Chicago," I was with a female friend. She LOVED "the Cell Block Tango." She claimed that all of the women acted in self defense. In other words, "he had it coming!" She was (mostly) joking. But it did bring up an interesting issue. In the movie, Roxie and Fred fight before she shoots him. However, in the stage production, she shoots him because "nobody walks out on me."
Not including the finale of Xanadu was a grievous omission. It’s got everything: ONJ and Gene Kelly, roller disco, tight rope walkers, juggling mimes, muses, poppin and lockin, preppies, hand jiving, tango, swing dancing, zoot suits, and aerialists, all set to the music of ELO!
3 more I definitely would have added would be: “I Hope I Get It” from Chorus Line, “La Vie Boheme” from Rent and “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman! Part 2 needed please!!
For Fiddler I would have chosen "To Life" instead. West Side Story "Dance at the Gym." Annie "It's a Hard Knock Life." The Greatest Showman- "This is Me."
Patter songs in general are pretty hard to pull.off, but "America" is on another level. The vocals are amazing, especially in the original, and the choreography in both versions the choreography is absolutely impressive.
I would've added "I Hope I Get It" from A Chorus Line. It's a total full cast and chorus banger opener. And if we're considering animated features, "Be Our Guest" from Beauty and the Beast and "Under the Sea" from the Little Mermaid.
I did “I hope I get it” for dance class at my school and all of the theater kids (including me) were living our best lives and dieing after we finished we just laid on the market floor out of breath

I did a production of The Music Man and the most exhausting scene was Wells Fargo Wagon because you had to sing and dance with so much energy the whole time. Iowa Stubborn was also difficult as it involved a bunch of small family groups moving in patterns across the stage
We did "Joyful, Joyful" in choir when I was in HS. We did it the exact same way as the movie, so a soloist came out and sang the Lauryn Hill part and then she did all of the riffs. 25+ years later and that soloist just made her Broadway debut as the lead (Patina Miller's understudy) in "Into the Woods." I'll have to see if I can find the VHS (yikes!) of us performing together. About 20 of us showed up to see her first performance on Broadway. It was amazing.
I love the musical Grease, but I don't really see it as a number where the ensemble had to really bring it. It's extraordinarily catchy, but the dancing and singing is almost lackadaisical compared to the intensity of some of the others. Also, not sure how both Greatest Showman and Rent didn't make this list. This is the Greatest Show is a huge ensemble number, and Rent's La Vie Boheme was so innovative! Singular Sensation from a Chorus Line would've also been a great choice too, or Cats' big Jellicle number!
Wth msmojo! No acknowledgement for Consider Yourself from Oliver? That songs a staple for over the top stagey routines which has been replicated many times in other movies. P.S this list needs to be at least 20.
The guy in the green shirt is my go-to when explaining how committed someone needs to be, whether it’s a stage part or a job interview- that level is astounding and everyone can be Green Shirt Guy!!
Wow are you kidding me? How could Rich Man's Frug from Sweet Charity not even be mentioned much less not be #1? It is a completely unique and still influential Fosse dance number copied even by Beyonce. Major oversight.
That was Senta Moses. I only know this because I saw The Blues Brothers shortly after a saw a tour of the musical Annie a few months before and she played the youngest orphan Mollie.
In the movie "Annie", the song "We got Annie" was an ensemble scene with incredible dancing, that made me wonder if being hired at the Warbucks mansion required you to be a classically trained dancer. Although it was a fairly small ensemble, the cast in "Godspell" (the movie) did great things in the song, "Bless the Lord, My Soul". In fact, in every song, dancing broke out.
Hmmm...I loved "Cool" from the original Westside Story movie. I think it's because most huge frenetic numbers from these musicals are joyful. Whereas, the Jets are trying to decompress after witnessing two tragic deaths from a gang rumble gone wrong. The weight of what happened to them, is interpreted brilliantly in this dance. And nowadays, most photography of these kinds of scenes, have too fast cutaway, so that you can barely register seeing the movements.
I think it was a made for TV version, but Donny Osmond's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is amazing. There are so many great ensemble songs, like "Go Go Go Joseph" sung in the jail and everyone is dressed in wild 60's clothes.
OMG!! "..you go, green shirt guy..!!" I just LOVE MsMojo for acknowledging that dancer! I don't know him, but I always gravitate to watching him dance whenever that video or scene comes around..
But nobody's gonna talk about the short girl in the pink dress? I swear this girl was determined to be seen because in every dance number she's always a little out of formation. In the final number she's practically dancing in the middle of the aisle. She grabs my attention every single time.
I have Grease on DVD (it may be a special anniversary edition, I can't recall right now) and on the commentary they acknowledge the featured ensemble dancers (AKA D1-20) as acting as dance captains and teaching the other dancers the moves. We Go Together is their curtain call. 😍🤩
But the amount of things that occurred in Roger and Hammerstein Cinderella in were having a ball mixed with the amount of tongue twisters of names and stuff phew!
I'm surprised the scenes in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang didn't get mentioned. The 'Me Ol' Bamboo' and the 'Music Box' dance numbers are one of some of my favorites.
The music box dance wasn't an ensemble dance. "Me ol' Bamboo" most certainly was. Fun fact: The song referenced in the Tom Cruise version of "War of the Worlds" (Hushaby Mountain") came from the movie "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang".
Some that are missed: June is Busting Out All Over - from the movie Carousel. There is Nothing Like a Dame - South Pacific . Can't Help Lovin' That Man of Mine- Show Boat. Who Will Buy or Oom-Pah-Pah from Oliver! and Lullabye of Broadway or 42nd Street - 42nd Street The Best of Times - La Cage aux Folles. Put on Your Sunday Clothes - Hello Dolly among the others 😎.
"They Both Reached For The Gun" is my favorite number from Chicago. The way the chorus just wholly embraces the marionette shtick, complete with wire work, is so much fun to watch
I agree ... until I remember All I care about is Love .... until i remember When Youre Good to Mama .... until I remember I just Can;t do it alone ... until I rememebr the finale of the film. TO ME Chicago may not be the BEST movie ever made but it is PERFECT as far as I am concerned.

La Vie Boheme - Rent Superstar - Jesus Christ Superstar (my absolute favorite) Down on Skid Row - Little Shop of Horrors None of them were animated but "Under the Sea" - The Little Mermaid Off to See the Wizard - The Wizard of Oz Masquerade - Phantom of the Opera I could literally go on all day
"A Brand New Day" is an even better ensemble scene from _The Wiz_ . It's the equivalent of "Feelin' Good" from _The Roar of the Greasepaint... _ except it's dozens exulting in their emancipation in _The Wiz_ . I can't help but get emotional when those grotesque masks and costumes distorting the essence of the people underneath are shed and those beautiful dancers emerge and jump higher and higher and higher expressing their joy.
There are so many from the Producers. The King of All Broadway got cut. Springtime for Hitler. But my favorite has to be Along Came Bialy with the tapping walkers.
My freshman chorus class performed Joyful Joyful at our concert. Except it was myself and another female student who did the tumbling across at the beginning. Sister Act 2 had come out that year, and 28 years later it still is the best chorus performance ever!!

Thanks for an interesting video. The one great omission I see is the Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead number from the Wizard of Oz. It's maybe the most famous and energetic dance numbers in the history of cinema.
Sorry, but "Another day of sun" should be at least at the podium if not first on this list, and yet it's not even mentioned. There's so many better choises for this list... What about High School Musical trilogy? What about The Greatest Showman? So many good picks only from those movies and there's plenety of others. I'm really disappointed. Very lazely done.
On Grease, the guy on the Green shirt you refer to was named Daniel Levans. And he was a highly trained classical ballet dancer and took part of the best ballet companies in the USA. He unfortunately lost his battle to a lung infection in 2015.
I love Lay All your Love on Me from Mamma Mia, when the guys come out of the water and start dancing then it segues into the women dancing. Love that scene every time I see it!

It's extraordinarily catchy, but the dancing and singing is almost lackadaisical compared to the intensity of some of the others. Also, not sure how both Greatest Showman and Rent didn't make this list. This is the Greatest Show is a huge ensemble number, and Rent's La Vie Boheme was so innovative! Singular Sensation from a Chorus Line would've also been a great choice too, or Cats' big Jellicle number!

In the movie "Annie", the song "We got Annie" was an ensemble scene with incredible dancing, that made me wonder if being hired at the Warbucks mansion required you to be a classically trained dancer.
Although it was a fairly small ensemble, the cast in "Godspell" (the movie) did great things in the song, "Bless the Lord, My Soul". In fact, in every song, dancing broke out.

Hmmm...I loved "Cool" from the original Westside Story movie. I think it's because most huge frenetic numbers from these musicals are joyful.
Whereas, the Jets are trying to decompress after witnessing two tragic deaths from a gang rumble gone wrong. The weight of what happened to them, is interpreted brilliantly in this dance.
And nowadays, most photography of these kinds of scenes, have too fast cutaway, so that you can barely register seeing the movements.
I think it was a made for TV version, but Donny Osmond's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is amazing. There are so many great ensemble songs, like "Go Go Go Joseph" sung in the jail and everyone is dressed in wild 60's clothes.

But nobody's gonna talk about the short girl in the pink dress? I swear this girl was determined to be seen because in every dance number she's always a little out of formation. In the final number she's practically dancing in the middle of the aisle. She grabs my attention every single time.

I have Grease on DVD (it may be a special anniversary edition, I can't recall right now) and on the commentary they acknowledge the featured ensemble dancers (AKA D1-20) as acting as dance captains and teaching the other dancers the moves. We Go Together is their curtain call. 😍🤩

I'm surprised the scenes in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang didn't get mentioned. The 'Me Ol' Bamboo' and the 'Music Box' dance numbers are one of some of my favorites.

"They Both Reached For The Gun" is my favorite number from Chicago. The way the chorus just wholly embraces the marionette shtick, complete with wire work, is so much fun to watch

"A Brand New Day" is an even better ensemble scene from _The Wiz_ . It's the equivalent of "Feelin' Good" from _The Roar of the Greasepaint... _ except it's dozens exulting in their emancipation in _The Wiz_ . I can't help but get emotional when those grotesque masks and costumes distorting the essence of the people underneath are shed and those beautiful dancers emerge and jump higher and higher and higher expressing their joy.
It happens soon after that scene so (to me) all that is the same vote lol. But honestly I said the same thing

My freshman chorus class performed Joyful Joyful at our concert. Except it was myself and another female student who did the tumbling across at the beginning. Sister Act 2 had come out that year, and 28 years later it still is the best chorus performance ever!!

On Grease, the guy on the Green shirt you refer to was named Daniel Levans. And he was a highly trained classical ballet dancer and took part of the best ballet companies in the USA. He unfortunately lost his battle to a lung infection in 2015.
