North Korea made a Wii clone console. North Korea has video games. I have so many questions. What are these consoles? Who made them? What games do they have? When compared to games from the rest of the world, are DPRK gamers getting titles that are Kim Jong Unique or are these games just same same but different? Do they have a game where you play as a plastic bag floating through the wind? So many questions!

We see some comments and posts stating that Studio SEK did not work on The Lion King, but rather, they worked on an Italian spin-off called Simba the King Lion.
It is certain that they worked on Simba the King Lion, but it’s impossible to say with certainty (As with most things regarding NK) that they did or didn’t work with Disney.
However, we didn’t make a mistake in our statements. Here are some articles that led us to believe that they worked with Disney for a period of time:

Seeing Linus call Kim Jong Il a furry was certainly not something I expected to experience on a Sunday afternoon.
It's funny but also irritating from a nerds perspective. The mid 1970s is kind of the kindling for Furry and big part of it was opposing generic stereotypical crap that would have been common in animation especially propaganda. Some of the earliest Furries were "alien" species specifically because this gives an excuse to world build around the origin of the species. That was the point.. to tell stories about Furries... not use talking animals to tell stories. Hope that makes sense.
@@Furiends furries somewhat changed meaning. Especially online. People no longer think about innocent animated characters. People think about the fetishists and mentally challenged believing they are furry animals.
as someone has been in north korea several times before the lockdown, there are way more games than the examples here
@@EximiusDux I don't think that's the fault of furries.

15:00 Growing up in Syria back in 2005-2006 we had this exact show dubbed to Arabic. It was called "فارس الشجاع" which literally translates to "Brave Knight". Although this is the first time I'm learning that it's a North Korean show, I remember at the time that it felt somewhat weird and different from the usual Japanese stuff like Digimon, Pokemon, or Case Closed (Detective Conan). Nevertheless I remember really enjoying the show, It features themes of honor, courage, and patriotism.
I'm also Syrian :D
"Its badminton... and i know what company i work for" 😂😂
I remember when Linus funded a whole badminton showgame and invited the World Champion and World No. 1 men single's badminton player, Viktor Axelsen. The video is on TH-cam where he plays against Viktor Axelsen
I didn't sponsor that event. I just sponsored the club the organized it and won the draw to be one of quite a few people who played a couple points with Viktor - LS

My dad went to school with Volker Eloesser who is one of the founders of Nosotek. That's the same guy who made The Curse of Ra for the Amiga. Before that NK joint venture he had made millions from selling his mobile game company to Jamba in 2004 (which was then sold to Verisign and then to News Corp, which is why Nosotek got the Big Lebowski deal). In a recent interview he said that at the time no one of his NK staff was allowed internet access, only he as a Westerner would get modem access that even at the time (2008-10) was too slow to access larger websites. He also played several roles in NK movies because he was one of the few Westerners in the country at the time. He now owns a business that markets historic and retro window and door handles from Europe and Asia.

It's worth noting the original Wiimote itself didn't truly have a gyroscope and used an accelerometer instead. This was the reason for the introduction of the Wii Motion Plus accessory which added a gyroscope. Some Wiimotes made late in the console's life did come with Wii Motion Plus integrated into the unit. The Wii itself also used remarkably primitive hardware even for its time, having only 88 MB of RAM, a PowerPC CPU slightly upgraded from the GameCube's and only a 512 MB flash memory chip for storage. It was closer to the technology of the 6th gen than it was to the Xbox 360 and PS3 that it competed against. Still sold like hotcakes though.
That's Nintendo for you. Barely half the work and ingenuity, but sells no problem. The Apple of video games.
@@witebatman no, it's because Nintendo is a gaming company and they actually focus on making games that are fun. A lot of other companies are businesses that just happen to be in the gaming space. Nintendo is one of the few remaining that is an actual gaming company. An easy example is to take a look at Nintendo executive pay vs EA executive pay (or worse, Bobby Kotick remuneration) and the decisions Nintendo made recently during difficult economic times not only to retain their employees, but actually give them a payrise.
@@witebatman The work and ingenuity is in the software, not the hardware for both.
@@wahahabuh
@@witebatman only in terms of how they treat their customers. apple is interested in pushing technology further (and profiting from that - eg their work in inventing and introducing USB C) whereas nintendo couldnt care less what their competitors are doing in the industry and are highly insular.
Gotta admire the work LTT group puts on making videos. This knowledge is basically useless to me but I watched it anyways and it was entertaining
I feel like this is one of the better looks "behind the curtain" of the DPRK on TH-cam, simply because the premise is about a piece of technology and not strictly pushing some agenda. Like, I had no idea about the cartoons in North Korea, and most other videos about what "life is really like" would just tell you everybody's eating grass and not even mention their media.
Entertainment is not useless if it's entertaining.
@@logarhythmic6859 i mean, it is missing some food for thought, for instance the theory that moviemaker wasn't kidnapped, but it was made look that way so he could then get back after the work - imagine how your life would be in South Korea after voluntarily going to the North. But yes, it is significantly better than other content on the theme.

@@garystinten9339 I had to look that up, but no that movie is irrelevant. In that film the Greek character doesn't even use that exact line, he makes reference to the expression discussed here when talking with a Vietnamese character, saying, "same, same. In Australia everything the same." However, the expression itself is significantly older than just the year 2000.
Some say that it's origin goes as far back as the Vietnam War, however it was at least as far back as the 80s that it emerged.

My God, I realized that it is a SUBOR logo on the console that Linus used only in the middle portion of the video... I knew that logo seemed familiar... SUBOR were very famous in 90s with their console clones... and they're still doing the same business so many years later.

Badminton is a perfect game for DPRK. It just wears you down until you resign yourself to accepting it.
Can't wait to play some Kim Jong Uno on this...
Where the Reverse card always targets you and the illustrious leader always wins.
😂
YOU HAVE KIM JONG UNO! IT CAME WITH YOUR DAMN DICTATOR!
When I stayed at the Yanggakdo in 2017 we used the bowling alley and although we'd made an adult beverage or two (their local beer is excellent) in the adjacent karaoke bar I remember the bowling lanes being very well maintained.
I can't comment on the perfect game score, we'd enjoyed enough Taedonggang beer to have less than zero change of getting anywhere near finding it.
There’s also another Bowling Alley in North Korea which called “Golden Lane” and that place is bigger than the one in the hotel. So sad there aren’t any Bowling Leagues or Pro Bowlers in North Korea that can host tournaments and take up all the Lanes of that place.
Its more old school as it uses the same lane equipment as Japan uses for their Bowling Alleys back then. It was unfortunately shut down for good, not sure when but it was only a few years after Kim Jong Un came to power
This was a great episode! Very interesting and well done. I found this absolutely fascinating! More videos like this please!!!

Great job with the research on this one, Tanner!
It was long overdue we'd get a video like this, which goes into any kind of depth and shows real work in research having been done. Nice to see LTT doesn't just care about silliness and clickbait.
“I would NOT want to play Twister with her” -Linus
He sits on a throne of lies!!! Remember where his wife comes from..m
I'm still processing the fact that you made Ludwig test out a bidet live on video
The clickbait hurts. It's not that North Korea made a game console, or a North Korean console. It's a Chinese console made by a brand named SUBOR in China. Even you yourself question why it has Chinese in it, and even the thumbnail has Chinese on the product. And you even mention yours isn't the Korean rebranded OEM one. Why not use a better, less clickbaity, title that properly represents the video? "The Chinese Game Console Resold in North Korea".... Wouldn't get as much views, right?
You watched the video. Don’t whine and enjoy the fact you get fun and funky videos like this click Baitey or not.
Can't agree more. You hit the point!

Well, it'll be for the elites in Pyongyang that can afford it, and also, North Korea is China's only ally, militarily, politically, and economically which means that whatever is "Made in China" gets imported to North Korea like that game console which means that North Koreans are playing bootlegged games and consoles/handhelds.

This was a really cool and enjoyable video! Love hearing Linus talk about more obscure tech and deep dive into the history of gaming and tech culture that's largely isolated from us here in the West.
Ooooh the intro! That's so good.
Hold up, has Linus (or anyone at LTT for that matter) never used a Playstation EyeToy before? Because that "fruit ninja" knockoff gameplay was immediately recognisable as an EyeToy clone, which makes it doubly surprising considering Linus said he would be channelling Jackie Chan, and the most well known EyeToy game is probably the one where you fight ninjas.
