The long intro was more or less an interlude that gave the hornist, Josef Nagel, time to collect the proper crook(s) and relocate himself to the soloist position and blow them away with his skills. At least I would love for that version to be correct. It was probably extended out of respect for Josef Nagel whom legend has it was an unbelievable hornist.

Leonard Brown Such long orchestral introductions were the norm in Rosetti's day. All of Mozart's and Beethoven's concerti have them.
