There is deep admiration and respect but also much more. I do believe he's in meaningless relationships because of Kate being married. Their lost their boat (pun was unintended but it fits) and while she went on, regretfully at first, he never could. Some bonds are forever. Even if they don't turn out with a happy ending.

The film, unfortunately and very oddly, did not receive great cinema distribution in the US, but worldwide it did very good for a low budget indie with a very dark subject matter. It's pretty cool DiCaprio is supporting her cause she absolutely deserves an Oscar nom for Lee.
