That was I did as well and wanted to write) Really, there is a small difference only on high middle frequencies. And, yes, it is spotted on clean a bit, but almost nothing on overdrive
I closed my eyes and could not tell the difference. However, I am old and can't hear like I once could. And listening for the difference I had to think, this guy can play!
They are really different on cleans. Not so much on distortion on the bridge but on the middle and neck they are different enough. It's worth owning both.
Would like to hear them with same electronics and pickups. Also maple fretboard on Tele is slightly responsible for less "edginess" in tone. Rosewood would get you even closer to Les Paul if we talk about minor tonal differences.
@@lukscar2000 The maple fingerboard has absolutely nothing to do with it. Tone woods do not matter on a solid body electric guitar. The difference is the "Wide Range" humbuckers used in the Tele Deluxe. While they are not technically made the same as they were in the early 70s, they are still distinctively different than any kind of humbuckers Gibson uses in their Les Pauls. Seth Lover designed them with more clarity and highs to sound different from his old PAF style humbuckers. They are drastically different compared to the Burstbucker as well.
@@mikemurdock7234 sorry, no. Having owned Fenders with both rosewood & maple fretboards, the maple will always sound brighter & cleaner than the rosewood... especially in the neck position!
They sound almost totally identical... I've seen your other videos comparing guitars in this way (which is one of the best way I've seen on TH-cam) and usually will be able to tell the difference between 2 guitars pretty quickly. But this Tele Deluxe and a Gibson Les Paul its almost impossible. Thank you for sharing your talents and efforts
If you listen closer I think it's obvious (likely due to the long fender scale length vs gibsons shorter scale) especially on high gain while the pickups might not be suited to high gain, but the attack on the fender was more in your face. And the cleans I feel were better as the Tele had that extra sparkle on top that made them much more balanced and made the Highs stand out more. I love me a les paul don't get me wrong but there are many fender guitars that are just underrated.
Love both. IMO the LP for the looks and Page inspiration, but ohhhh that fragile headstock and tuners - plus the cost(!!). The dead-on durability and stability of the TD (despite it's rather everyman looks) - not to mention the same chord length (and fret spacing) as my other teles - makes the TD my next guitar. And in black it's just a badass axe.
Great comparison, thanks for posting. To my ears, they do sound quite similar, but the LP sounds a bit more compressed and more mid(-frequency)-focused. My guess is that this is more apparent in a mix, than soloing them s/s. One thing that would be interesting is how the Tele Deluxe would sound with the same scale (fretboard) length as the LP.
I found the difference to be pretty big, with the LP having less note definition and a more muddy sound, the deluxe would be a lot better and easier to deal with in a mix, where the LP would be adding mid range mush to the mix the deluxe sounds more musical. I'm listening through Genelec 8030B monitors.
@@elmeromero6559 I can only get a Les Paul to sound good on high gain TBH. Every other sound just sounds muddy to me. I have a PRS and a Humbucker loaded Strat and they both out perform my Les Paul. My LP is an Epiphone but it was round $700 back in 2009 so it’s definitely no bottom end guitar
@@regularjack2 As someone who recently upgraded from a 2008 Epi Les Paul to 2022 Gibson LP Tribute the difference in feel, playability, and tone is almost night and day in favor of the Gibson. There's no "better" choice when it comes to guitar because everybody here's things in their own unique way.
@@regularjack2 I have a 2006 year Gibson Les Paul Studio and the same problem. With higher gain, it sounds good for playing Metal, but is far too muddy to do anything else. I went through several clean amps and could never get it to sound the way I wanted. I bought an Epiphone ES-339 and people do not believe me that guitar nearly a thousand dollars less sounds better, but it does.
Great, great comparison! I'm at that fork in the road, and it's time to decide. I used to have an early 80's Fender Lead I with humbuckers and wish I still did.
For high gains I liked the LP better but for clean neck sounds the Tele is just so amazingly bright and wide sounding. And I love it! Also the second clip is so nice math rock /midwest emo kinda and it’s lovely! I like how both sound but the tele wins by a margin, also teles are more comfy to play imo.
I couldn't really tell the difference between them. They're nearly identical. The Telecaster Deluxe is pretty cool and underrated. I just love that Les Paul sound and 70s style guitars/vibes.
They sound very similar. I was expecting bigger differences. Eyes closed I probably could not tell the difference. Maybe with cleans Tele has bit more clarity and sparkle and that metal riff sounded a bit tighter with Paul. I was surprised that with classic gain I prefered Tele...But as I said the differences were basicly insignificant. Did you use the exact same amp settings? I have Tele Deluxe and I think it's more comfortable instrument to play. It's lighter and also sits better in your lap. I also prefer the smaller neck.
the tele deluxe has got it all... looks, sounds, clarity, versatility, easy to handle. i'm looking to a high quality american made one and keep it as my only electric guitar
widerange (CuNiFe) pickups sounds less compressed plus because of the scale length of the Fender, it gives a springy resonance. If that has the first issue in the 70s it will have 1MEG pots which will provide wider Frequency access. I like the LP too.
the Gibson has the shorter scale length..that makes a difference to some. To fit the WR into a LP would mean damaging the guitar cutting out wood to fit...
I like the Gibson more. It has this mean, throaty growl and warmth that the Tele doesn’t. Plus it’s short-scale so it’s more compact and easier to play. I still like the way the Tele sounds though, I might pick up a Classic Vibe on of these days…..
To they sound pretty different. Les Paul is mids focused whereas the tele is scooped with more sparkle. Both sound good, but the tele is prettier to my ear while the Les Paul is a bit more focused.
I have 2 Fender Deluxe style with normal humbuckers. Two Custom telecaster single humbuckers I have made. 1 telecaster style with P-90's. I have one Les Paul custom. I like the LP but I love my Teles.
The difference is the scale length. If both guitars had the exact same pots, pickups, string gauges etc… the tighter/longer Fender scale would be slightly more defined and “bright”, and the shorter scale Gibson would be thicker and less defined. The feel is even more drastic when playing. Judging by the comments, the majority of people are new players that haven’t learned this. Get a guitar of each 25.5 and 24.75 scale length (does not have to be these brands) and play them consecutively and you’ll understand it quick.

The only differences are the looks and feel I already have a Les Paul and all so I’m not sure if I should get the tele it sounds the same not really anything unique about it but the looks and feel so that’s kinda disappointing.
Good comparison. It may have helped a bit more if you described the pickups. EG were the Fender pickups CuNiFe or Alnico? Its a big difference in sound between them.
wow what a great example to define the difference... next to nothing i recon. suppose it comes down to the guitar over the sound on this one... well done....
I closed my eyes and could barely tell the difference, but when I opened them I like the way the Les Paul looks.
Yeah, they're almost the same guitar. What really makes a classic tele sound like a tele is the bridge. The deluxe has just a regular hardtail bridge.
