When I was a kid my parents had to budget way more than they do now and I remember one Christmas me and my siblings opened a karaoke machine (lol) and to my little kid brain that was the height of luxury. And so anyway I had ended up saying something along the lines of "I know Santa is real bc mom and dad would NEVER buy us something like this", accidentally roasting them to their faces while also allowing the Santa lie to continue for a few years longer 😂

My mom would wake up and take bites out of the carrots and leave glitter to make it look like they ate them too. So cute

As an east coaster, I love it when Amanda talks about the east coast. I will say, once September 1st hits, the apple cider is on the stove! My mom makes warm apple cider and throughout fall. Every Halloween, after trick or treat, my mom puts apple cider with oranges, cinnamon sticks, and cloves and we curl up and watch the great pumpkin. We do not drink it on Christmas though.

My Christmas was pretty chill. Christmas Eve we'd open one gift (usually a book, family game, movie we could all enjoy that evening), then bed, then I'd wake up whenever and my parents let me open my stocking by myself so they could sleep in (and a little older I asked for my own tiny tree and they'd put a couple smaller gifts like new CDs under it) then wait for my parents to get up. We'd ALWAYS have homemade cinnamon rolls then open presents. And when I was very little and grandma was still alive, we'd go to her place that afternoon/evening for presents from extended family and supper.
Well, technically Chanse isn't wrong, because Frozen was loosely based on the original Snow Queen fairytale lol. I had a book of Hans Christian Anderson stories as a kid and when I read The Snow Queen (because I had heard Frozen was nearing the end of production and I wanted to study up lol) I was just like "what is going on?" It's kind of long and complicated for a fairytale. There's all the stuff about the evil mirror, even though that isn't really the focus of the story. You can't really shorten it down like you can with other fairytales. There were a few Snow Queen movies made, though, including an animated adaptation that came out the year before Frozen did. And yet it's still not really a well-known fairytale. I used to read this book series called Whatever After (maybe the author's still writing them, idk) about two kids who get transported into a different fairytale world in each book, and they try to help the main characters of each story get to their ending. And it always plays out a little differently from how you'd expect. Anyway, I was surprised when there was a book where they got transported into The Snow Queen. One of the few times the original story got acknowledged in the media I was consuming lol

I got coal once as a joke for one of my Christmas gifts but it backfired lol. My parents thought it would be funny and then they'd give me my real gifts but they apparently forgot I'm a nerd for nature. They looked so nonplussed XD I still have that bit of coal, it's with my rock collection lol. Stores can't accept returns on those types of products, so the higher end stores will open the box and show the buyer everything that's in the box and demonstrate any features before the item leaves the store. Christmas Eve we'd open one gift (usually a book, family game, movie we could all enjoy that evening), then bed, then I'd wake up whenever and my parents let me open my stocking by myself so they could sleep in (and a little older I asked for my own tiny tree and they'd put a couple smaller gifts like new CDs under it) then wait for my parents to get up. We'd ALWAYS have homemade cinnamon rolls then open presents. And when I was very little and grandma was still alive, we'd go to her place that afternoon/evening for presents from extended family and supper.

Well, technically Chanse isn't wrong, because Frozen was loosely based on the original Snow Queen fairytale lol. I had a book of Hans Christian Anderson stories as a kid and when I read The Snow Queen (because I had heard Frozen was nearing the end of production and I wanted to study up lol) I was just like "what is going on?" It's kind of long and complicated for a fairytale. There's all the stuff about the evil mirror, even though that isn't really the focus of the story. You can't really shorten it down like you can with other fairytales.
There were a few Snow Queen movies made, though, including an animated adaptation that came out the year before Frozen did. And yet it's still not really a well-known fairytale.
I used to read this book series called Whatever After (maybe the author's still writing them, idk) about two kids who get transported into a different fairytale world in each book, and they try to help the main characters of each story get to their ending. And it always plays out a little differently from how you'd expect. Anyway, I was surprised when there was a book where they got transported into The Snow Queen. One of the few times the original story got acknowledged in the media I was consuming lol

I got coal once as a joke for one of my Christmas gifts but it backfired lol. My parents thought it would be funny and then they'd give me my real gifts but they apparently forgot I'm a nerd for nature. I saw it in the little box and immediately got excited and started spouting off every fact I knew about coal! They looked so nonplussed XD I still have that bit of coal, it's with my rock collection lol. Also, I was around 10 when I realized Santa wasn't real, because the tags on the gift looked suspiciously like my moms handwriting XD
Amanda, the open present your mom gave you was probably purchased in a store. Stores can't accept returns on those types of products, so the higher end stores will open the box and show the buyer everything that's in the box and demonstrate any features before the item leaves the store. It's standard procedure at all the stores I've purchased from.

on the topic of presents for friends; I personally love homemade gifts. I have a friend who almost always gives me something they’ve crocheted, like a Jack Skellington figure or little Christmas tree ornaments. It always makes me so happy and is the best part of the whole gift. Half my apartment is decorated with just crocheted figures at this point
I like the “I Don’t Think So Honey” segment at the end, though I think credit is due to Matt and Bowen who really crystallized and perfected the art form. I wish we could see the UCB sketch of Amanda’s mom’s gift 😂
