Building a fun MTB jump out of an old log!

  • This huge mountain bike trail in my backyard continues to grow. In this episode, I transform a crappy old MTB jump into a stunning tabletop with an old log through the middle of it.
    This was my first time making a dirt paste and properly sculpting a jump. I had to create a homemade sieve because the ground around here is very rocky. This meant that I could get loads of fine dirt that mixed well with water. The finished result is a small kicker that is solid as a rock on my downhill mountain bike trail.
    I have filmed some of the riding with a remote control cable cam and it looks awesome.
    The Wiral LITE cable cam shots are so cool. The Wiral Lite is perfect for mountain biking.

    This MTB trail build channel has been inspired by Seth at Berm Peak, Mark Matthews and his isolation series, Seth at Backyard Trail Builds, Sam Reynolds pump track and back yard jump line, Matt Jones and his compound and back yard jump line, Skills With Phil, Downhill Jake and many many more mountain bike trail builders. I can’t thank these people enough for sharing their content. It was videos like these that not only kept me entertained during lockdown but inspired me to get out and build my own trails.

    tip. make all jump ramps longer then your bikes wheel base. that way both wheels get sent into the sky at the same time and it dosent feel like a speed hump and want to buck you. roughly 140cm long or bigger is best and gap to taste :P

    Just watched this again after TH-cam recommended it 8 months later, and again so entertaining. I just noticed a sneak peek at 4:20 and I LOVE how the music goes silent during your airtime at 9:01 oh and the wheelbarrow packing, genius!

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait what was the sneak peek at 4:20? Thanks for rewatching. It's kinda funny to go back to the earlier episodes. My editing and storytelling has already come so far. I do think I will eventually do a second channel with more lowkey vlog style videos of the day to day stuff. I feel it will be similar to this. And then have the bif flashy builds and vidoes on my regular channel. But that is me day dreaming lol. I need to just focus on one channel for now.

      @mattspen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cutlaps there is a short shot of a mechanical bucket at 4:20 which I don’t think you show the full backhoe until a later episode.
      I like that your channel is fast paced. I just watched another trail builder slowly clear brush for 30 mins and it was too slow imo, I had to play it at 2x speed

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ohhh the excavator is first shown in episode 1... but it may have been cut out now. I can't remember. The earlier episodes used to be a bit longer and long winded so I used the TH-cam editing feature to cut some extra fluff. Maybe the video of 30 mins clearing bush could do the same haha.
      Yup I have been learning a lot about TH-cam and keeping up the pace to keep viewers attention. It's been fun.

    I imagine you're using a motorised gimbal of some sort for those smooth pushing shots?
    Interested in what model and also what cameras/gear you are using in general??
    The trail is looking sick already man, I reckon my MTB riding level is probably around or just worse than yours at this point in the series (I imagine you will improve quickly since you're riding a heap!)

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh weird, this comment got marked as spam.
      The majority of the shots including barrow and shovel were all taken with my gopro using the max lens mod. It keeps the horizon level no matter what. I do have a gimbal but don't use it for any of this footage. It only fits my old gopros. I find the new stabilisation in the GoPros is more than enough for my needs. Occasionally I will do some extra stabilisation in post but not much.
      There are some cable cam shots at the end. And at the end of the previous episode is the only time I have used my insta360 in the series. There was a cable cam shot where I track myself on the bike. It's a cool feature but I find the quality is a bit low for my liking.
      I would love to have an open day for people to come and ride the trail. I just want to make it a bit longer and a few more features first.

      I don't think I used any drone footage in this episode but I do have one. The movement shots were done with my remote control cable cam.
      And for the dirt paste its good to have a mixture of dirt and clay. Too much clay and it shrinks and cracks way too much and if the dirt is too sandy it won't stick together. The kicker held up really strong to the recent rain.
