- Welcome to our 1978 Jaguar XJ6 Series 2 barn find. The Jag was stored in a garage not far from us, only a couple of miles away, since 1999, 24 years ago, when it was taken off the road for maintenance by it’s previous owner.
In this episode we begin the job of tidying up the engine bay, starting with a refurb of the cam covers, including new gasket etc. We also give the automatic transmission a service with new oil and filter.
The challenge we have set ourselves in this Jaguar barn find series, is to revive the Jag and to get the car back on the road again.
So let’s crack on, We hope you enjoy the episode
Huge thank you for watching.

Purring like a kitten, just like she deserves. It’s amazing what a little elbow grease can accomplish on those rocker covers too. Keep at it lads
Glad those plugs sorted the misfire. My 84 Sovereign used to do the same. Top job chaps, keep.it coming!
Harrys Garage ,Ian Tyrell and you guys, great Sunday evening .👍👍👍
Love this XJ6 had driven XJ8s AJ-V8 but to me Jags as a Coventry kid are Straight 6s 🤌🏻
Super amazing job and ability to put the car on the road again working well, with a practical approach! Well done
You and your dad , great projects - simply the most heart warming of times on the internet
At last , A man that knows how to shut a Jaguar bonnet correctly. Really enjoy these Jag videos , Thanks for doing them.
I would say 'almost' correct, i was told you do it ALL from the front, giving an upward movement on the grill, at least he didn't slam it
When I had my Etype series 2 4.2 many years ago. Sometimes it was a swine to get started. Once running it was fine. I eventually pinned it down to the Lucas ign coil. It had a short inside & turned out it was bad on many XJ engines. Changed the coil & it started on the key 1 st crank. Just a thought.
Steve.
I tend to forget how old those Jaguars are . The XJ Jaguars of that period really have all the beautiful lines and chrome fittings that a Jaguar should have to make the finished car a beauty
Are they are the business. No more XJ being made an these are probably better well are better than when Ford owned Jaguar. I'm a Coventry Kid an had family work for them an neighbours very skilled men an the Jaguar Straight 6 is just Class
These are better than the new Jags an they don't make XJ's no more They went AJ-V8 XJ8 and AJ-V6 for the X type an S type. A proper Jaguar is a Straight 6 that won motor sports an being a Coventry Kid living down the road from Brown's Lane I've got a soft spot for these old XJ6 i mean look at the back of the car just Class
Fantastic work , really enjoy your videos .
Brilliant video, love the jag content. Nice to see her runnin sweet, good oil pressure! The body looks very solid, well worth preserving. Top work lads, look forward to the next one.
Damn it - now I want an XJ6!
a beautiful road for a test drive.
The hear resistant paint I used on my cooker looked the same as yours, it had to be heated up in the oven to set it
To continue the fan saga - yes the fan will work, but it will be less efficient and noisier than when it's the right way round. Cheers Rachael
Love those Rocker Boxes look great nice work
Enjoy your beers boys, another great session.
XJ6 Coventry Motor ❤
Another fun packed show ! Thanks both .
It’s great the way you make us all feel included!😊
Love your work and really enjoy the content….
Like the Jag, my favourite one .❤
turned out great.motor sounds good BILL USA
Another great video thanks Andy Allen.
Nice job all the same.
could probably get some stainless dome nuts for the rocker covers
It’s looking good 👍
Excellent!! Nice job ! I think you should paint the large heat shield over the manifold black too after a clean up 👍
I'd just like to say (again) how much I enjoy your videos and am envious of the relationship you have with "Dad",
I got all of my enthusiasm from my Dad for working on cars (sadly no longer with us) who was an old school garage manager, not a single certificate to his name but if I could ever be a quarter as good as him I'd be 2 things, a bloody good mechanic and about 5 times better than I am now !!
(I think one of my proudest moments was doing a little job for him after he'd retired and him commenting to my Wife that he wouldn't have known how to do it,)
Wonderful to watch
Thank you
Great job, very much enjoyed it.
Mark - thought I’d joined the Patron channel but seeing nothing. Love the badge on the cam cover - most important part of the job! Also loved the masonry drill bit modification……
Hi. Thanks for the comments 👍. I’ve checked Patreon and you’re only down as a free member, you would need to Join the 1st Gear membership to see the content.

Come along nicely, Gentlemen. Quite a lot of progress so far. Really enjoying the series. Thanks for sharing.
Well done lads Great job can’t wait for the next one
Great content guys!
Keep up the good work.
More mini please 👍👍👍
Always a good watch, this is how the real world is! On the subject of the rusty Jag head nuts, I would clean off the loose rust but leave a thin layer, then treat with some rust convertor so they go black and once the reaction has finished polish with some WD40. I did this on my car and the black finish looks good...or until you can swap out to stainless steel..
The 1st paint looks like grey primer😮
Splendid work. The Jag is sounding good.
Great job, when I've done them I've polished them first, then wipe each coat of paint off with thinners.
Blue smoke from exhausts on start up or after idling could indicate worn valve stem oil seals which can sometimes lead to spark plug or plugs oiling up, subsequently causing a misfire. Don’t forget ,transmission fluid level should be checked while engine is running. Keep up the good work. 😊
They may not know this eh!?
The best bonnet in the world to look over when driving a car is a Jaguar Series 1, Series 2 or Series 3.
really nice to look at great job you both i love jaguar i got a 2010 one a X TYPE2.2 D
I think another item you could address to really spiff up the engine bay would be to tidy up the underside of the hood.
Bonnet
@@alanheneghan7502 who ever heard of "Little Red Riding Bonnet?" 🤣🤣🤣
Great work lads, can you put a link in for the quick jacks? Cheers.
yipee it's sunday
Well done guys runs very sweat Cheers
I would fit the bridge across the cam covers and pipe that carries hot air from the exhaust manifold to the air box to help with running in this cold weather and prevent carb icing if you were to use it a light throttle and steady speed on a dual carriageway or motorway.
wondering if the initial VHT paint would have only went black after 'baking'. I've used a lot of these VHT paints but never followed the instructions about curing them figuring that would happen once the parts were 'in action'
🤷♂
if it was a chaufeured car , probably Stanley Kalms's car, he was owner of DSG in 77
Would it not have been easier to sand blast them rocker boxes
Will you be doing as gunson colourtune on the SU Carbs and set the timing with a strobe light
A can in one hand and a glass of beer in the other is more appropriate fir your dad whilst he is shaking that can of paint🍺🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi Chaps, really enjoying your videos and the beers at the end are well deserved, reflection time is very important. Can you tell me what transmission fluid you used as I’m planning to do this exact job on my Daimler series 1. Keep up the good work 👍
Soppy water would have been better than dry sanding.
Rustoleum is your mate with this one HWTL
Those rusty dome nuts on top of the engine are frustrating me...!
I still can't understand why you haven't stripped the carbs down after being standing for 25 years. That's the first thing I would have done.
This might have been the sound quality but it sounded like it was ticking over too fast and that the choke was on hence the black sooty plugs. Have you checked the oil level in the damper pots on top of the carbs?
Yes you don’t understand
And you do I suppose?@@joeedwards627
100 times better...
Steady progress but it’s quite frustrating that you don’t take the opportunity to clean off old muck oil and grime from around where you’re working… all around the gearbox should have been done when you were under the car then you could tick that all off… it was the same when you had the radiator and everything removed.
Can you at least get some thinners and T-cut on the inner wings to bring back the original green paint ?
Cheers…
Isn’t the oil filler cap supposed to be red?
Nice reflective number plates would be nicer!
3.4 is rarer for a very good reason. Leather was an extra, it was under powered and was more thirsty than a 4.2 just the same reason a S1 2.8 was dropped
Just what they wanted to hear ?!?!
It's hardly relevant now @ringo196 . Might have been 50 years ago if you were using the car daily but this is something different. Would be a pity if only 4.2 Jags with leather were saved
Therefor the smaller Engines had less Problems regarding thin Walls between Cylinders and high Piston Speed because of big Strokes.
Great job, but?........Change those rusty dome nuts and washers to make it look good, otherwise whats the point !
You didn’t listen did you
Love the obligatory rock music - come on, lads, break the mould let’s not follow the herd; this isn’t ‘Fast and Loud’.
I’ve said before I’ve never seen so many comments from the armchair experts as I have on this channel, I’d have done this, I’d have done it this way, I wouldn’t do it like that, you crack on fella, do it your way, these people are sat at home wishing they were but can’t do or have done shit
