Maximum the Hormone are one of the legends of Japanese Rock and well known for their heavy genre bending and humour. Atarashii Gakko are the emerging free spirits of eclectic performance and have just finished their World Tour. A perfect match for this collaboration.
Shimi is an old MTH song and this is a collaboration of different styles of music and also generations, but not vastly different attitudes. It works so well because the original version of Shimi had the slower more melodic parts sung by their drummer, Nao, so substituting Atarashii Gakko sounds natural - Nao still gets to sing the final "melodic bit". I'll leave it to MTH fans to give you more info on them. AG! are the four women in the school sailor suits. Their name means "New School" and they are a song and dance group formed back in 2015 and are managed by Asobisystem and 88Rising. Mizyu (two hair bunches and air shamisen) had already worked with Asobisystem as a backup dancer with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Suzuka, Kanon and Rin joined her. Suzuka's extrovert personality and strong voice make her the obvious front woman on stage, she's the tallest and has the first solo in the video, but AG! are always quick to say that they have no leader. They are all trained dancers and do all of the choreography themselves and work with various producers on the songs. Their artistic input sets them apart from most J-pop and K-pop idol type groups and their stage shows are performed with a unique joy and flair. They've all worked hard on their voices and now have excellent control with Suzuka taking the lead, Rin often rapping and Mizyu and Kanon doing more melodic parts. They just released a new album called "AG! Calling" and are on the second half of their first World Tour. AG!'s music is all over the place, but their style is always entertaining and fun and for an intro to them have a look for "Atarashi Gakko, Otona Blue, The First Take". Make sure you turn on the English subtitles.
This is fantastic. Shimi is an older MTH track from 2007. AG fit into this collab incredibly well. MTH is pretty legandary in Japan and very influential. Hanabie started out as a MTH cover band and the drummers from Band-Maid & Nemophila were inspired by MTH's drummer, Nao (She was the last solo singer in the video) that girls could be drummers. MTH loves genre flips on a dime and it works perfectly. The visuals in this MV are phenomenal. Grungy, post apocalyptic, traditional Japanese culture, even some Japanese horror movie elements. Check out Satsui Vs Satsui, it's fire as well.
Both bands are really cool and have a lot of variety in their genres. Atarashii Gakko is just fantastic and I deeply regret not finding out about them in time to find a concert on their recent tour i could road trip too.
