Ep.3 Tripling the Massive Off Grid CABIN - Windows and Doors

- I am building an addition on my small cabin in the woods with reclaimed materials.
We use ash, cedar, and pine for most of the structure and siding.
We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.
Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!
Kevin, you and Shawn James, and The Outsider are the only people that I try to find time to watch. I'm a contractor, and I do lots of remodeling and additions, I really enjoy your videos
Pretty much the same.... "Wild Homestead" is excellent also
@@rawwillpower4408 I also like Simple Living Alaska. Young people who really have their stuff together
Don't forget Bushradical (beautiful snonorical voice) and Girl in the woods...
Try also Perkins Builder Brothers for fun videos.
@@princerae i watch them as well they are some amazing guys with many talents ive learned so much from them and from kevin as well
Wow. That older gentleman's shed!! What a collection of stuff. Cool.
Reminds me of my late Grampie's shed... Though admittedly fewer chainsaws
@@jonpomerance-trifts6113 Not many can boast quite that big collection of them...
You made that man’s day. You can tell he is very proud of his life’s work.
I really enjoyed hearing the future ideas for the cabin. A deck out the front would be wonderful though perhaps an 'indoor' washroom would make cabin time more appealing to your lovely wife.
Now that "young" man is a National Treasure! So much knowledge, ingenuitu, and history in his soul!
I like the Arial view. It helps me get a good idea of where everything is around the pond.
Aerial. Arial is a character from the Little Mermaid story by Hans Christian Anderson.
@@FreezyAbitKT7A That's spelled Ariel, not Arial
@@royrush288 A third spelling is far too much for us. You can spellcheck HCA's name while you are there..
My mil had gas refrigerator and it was fed from a gas bottle on the outside of the building and vented out the same way. Never had any issues keeping food cold. She also used a chest freezer and just filled the bottom with water let it freeze from the generator. Only had to have it powered 2hrs a day and everything stayed frozen and would freeze anything she put in it. Just some ideas for cold storage
This was a super fun episode! The chain saw museum guy and that whole dynamic was a real bonus! Enjoyed every minute- thanks!!
Come on people comment on his videos this man gets out works his but off for us and we all can learn from him I really enjoy watching him his you tube videos he is one of best on you tube
This nice old gentleman is a font of knowledge. Sharp as a tack! Bless him!😍🇨🇦
Kevin, these hit and miss engines are really nice. You may find help locating parts and more information on them, through a local antique machinery association. I am in Pennsylvania, USA and my local association has an association member just for help with those engines. He is a fount of information and very willing to help others keep these pieces of machinery alive. It is a place to start anyway. Thanks for all you do and keep up the great work.
A hamburger is the world's perfect food, in my opinion. I like to eat them for breakfast. Delicious, customizable and handheld.
Good idea getting your cabin in order. Winter is coming soon, literally and figuratively.
That kind of old garage at min. 13-19 is what you have to look forward to cleaning out in 50 years, Kevin.
I could look through that man's shed for days. I would love to have anything in that shed. Love this channel. Thanks for sharing.
A small back porch on the cabin for cooking outside. Keeps the smells out of the cabin. I realize you have an outdoor cooking space down by the pond. But one right outside the door would be convenient.
Love the drone shots. How about an aerial tour of the property ?
That is a big addition Kevin! You and Don went to chain saw heaven!
Kevin. I will Don's quiet demeanor and him making you laugh...
The drone shots gives perspective to what we’ve watched you built over the years and the density of the forest you are working with
Your videos are always so heartfelt and fun at the same time! Thank you for your ability to bring joy and smiles into our lives!👓🌪🍁
Your channel is a real TH-cam gem where every video is a little work of art. Keep up the great work ⛷🌟🐕
Keep up the great videos Kevin. your friend from Ontario Canada
Do everything you said Kevin..build everything out. Both styles of toilets. Just keep on keeping on.. much love and respect to you
Good morning, Team Leclair!
It’s really great to get another prospective by the drone shots! Love to see it after all those years on the ground!!! Great choice of music, too! All the best
You are an incredible builder 👷♂️ can't wait for your next video ty for the hard work
That old dude was so damn interesting!
He certainly has a pile of stories.
Those intro shots really put perspective on your little corner of the world. Your property is so beautiful. All the lushness, all the green. Absolutely breathtaking. It's amazing to see how fast nature tries to reclaim what is really hers. Thanks for another awesome video.
I've been watching from the beginning 😁 I love the end results but I really enjoy and love the commentary along the way... He makes it fun to reuse and up cycle.
Yay! A field trip!
The drone footage was great. Loved seeing so many of your projects! Plus, the pond looks great…so clear! Well done. I also enjoyed the Timelapse of you framing the cabin.
That was the coolest intro I’ve seen in years.
LOVE that drone footage in the beginning! Hubby & I have an off-grid camp and installed a Unique propane fridge and stove about 4 years ago. So far, so good! Love your videos!!!!!! 💜
I love the aerial view showing your builds in relation to each other.❤❤❤
Don good yo see you hope all is well
I love the old engines and your cabin is getting a real very fantastic upgrade as far as room and usability for your family and friends. I’ve used propane refrigerators and they work well and not as dangerous as some think as long as there installed properly do you have any camper gravel yards you could get one from most of them are still very nice as long as the mice haven’t moved in. I’ll get back with you on some of the other stuff like water got to do some research on that and other things.
You are tucked in the woods, love the Arial view. Loving the new cabin build, reminds me of a cabin my family stayed in , up in New brunswick. We use to vacation up their. Cabin was heated by a huge wood stove, hand pump for water, huge kettle was used to heat water for various uses, and our bathroom was the outhouse. Living 2 weeks a year in a rustic way was amazing.
You definitely need a fireplace. Cool find on the engines, believe they are farm tractor engines.
Sounds like you’re about to modernize everything 🔥
Necessity is the mother of all invention. Looking forward to the water tower build!
I would love to see him put in a shallow well.
The cabin addition is really coming along now, the window setup in front will be amazing. I use RV appliances myself, refrigerators, heaters, etc. I try to find Dometic units, they have been the most reliable and parts availability is great. The toilets I use in my cabins are "cartridge toilets", mount to the wall like a "normal toilet", but pull the waste canister from the back which is a chemical setup. Really nice units, no smell, and my daughters like them over the 5 gallon method..😂😅 Love what you're doing ❤️
The drone footage in the beginning was beautiful! Great job👍🏻 The chainsaw man was amazing!
As far as future cabin projects….I’m with your wife. Indoor 3 piece bathroom is a must. The front porch expansion would be nice as well. I don’t have any recommendations for propane refrigerator or toilets.
Thank you for sharing🙂
That sweet old man made my day. There is still good in the world
It's not just content; it's a source of inspiration. Thanks for the bright moments!🌷🌷 7 😺,
Loved this. The old couple was adorable.
Thank you so much for that drone shot. I think I asked it like 2 years ago. It was worth the wait. Nice camera work!
Thank Holden for that..
We’ve had a propane fridge & stove for over 50 years at our cottage. When not in use cover where you ignite because spiders build nest. No problems just make sure installed correctly and vented properly. We have fire extinguisher and carbon monoxide dectectors. Our cottage is on an island. I’m sorry don’t remember the name. Fridge works well and freezer holds quite a bit. We have compost toilet. We put two in and use one one year , switch off. Our shower is propane driven. Instant hot water, 10 steps back in the house so you don’t get cold.
An old school vent fan would be great right in the wall by the grill/griddle. Need that big deck energy 😀
Movie intro was sick. Guys got decades of crap stacked in that shop. Can’t wait to see you tackle the refrigerator project. 🐸🍺🔪🔥
This nice old gentleman is a font of knowledge. Bless him!😍🇨🇦
Extension is going to look great!
Love the put put tipity tap music those old engine make, nice post brother thanks for your company with the morning pot of coffee 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤟🏼🤙🏼🖖🏼🇳🇿
More awesome content!
I once had a 1938 servel propane refrigerator. It worked pretty well and had a tiny freezer box at the top that would make ice. It used about one barbecue size tank of gas or less per month. When we finally installed electricity I sold it for about $600 which was an awful lot of money for a 70 year old appliance. The burner was a tube of copper about one inch in diameter and I think there were fittings on the back that would allow external water from a cold spring to aid in the cooling but I never hooked that part up.I could never fully understood how you could make ice from burning propane. Magic I guess, especially since there were no moving parts. Guess that’s why it never wore out.
Love the videos Kevin. This cabin remodel is going to be awesome to watch.
In the UK all caravans and motorhomes have fridges that run on either propane, 12v or 240 volt. A caravan/motorhome breaker should have them. They aren't easily transferable between caravans and RVs (normally being built in) so should be cheap. Dometic (a Swedish company) is the most common brand in the UK and can be found in Canada too and they have good spares availability
31:00 A cooktop hood vent that runs on a dc brushless squirrel cage style fan vented through the wall sounds like a fantastic idea. 👍
I'm glad to have found your channel a few years ago when Chris was posting this original cabin build. I'm not into eating roadkill or the various critters, fungus that he finds laying around. I am a meat eater but he makes me rethink that. Perhaps convert the Hobbit root cellar to a walk in cooler.
Good morning from Minnesota USA. Great episode
Morning!
That's a good idea to bury the water tank. Your hill is high enough to bury the water tank and still gravity feed the water to the faucet and shower. The pump could have its own battery and a small solar panel to maintain the charge. A motorcycle or ATV battery would probably be enough. If you have a car jump pack, always bring it with you to hook it to the pump or to your other dead batteries to run the house temporarily.
Hey Kevin, I vote for a full septic system, a shower, a flushing toilet, and a well for running water. I have no doubt that you could build all of these. It would take your views to the next level.
We just know Kevin is gonna brainstorm some crazy awesome ideas through this build. Geez I'm 44 and I'm geeking out like I'm looking at a brand new Garcia Ambassador 5500 C3 bait caster on a Fenwick ultra sensitive 6.5 Ft medium/heavy action rod with titanium line guides!
Make an indoor bathroom composting toilet. Just build a container under the cabin(with an exterior access for cleanout time just like an ash catcher works in a wood burning stove) sub floor beneath the toilet fill 1/2 halfway with sawdust(you make a lot already) keep a bucket of sawdust next to the toilet to drop onto normal body waste removal functions. If odor is a concern mix sawdust with activated ground up charcoal or odor neutralizing kitty litter.
For your water solution build an insulated shed with 1 or 2 large hinged insulated doors with edge weather sealing to help keep cold air draft out and allow easy placement or removal of water tank as needed. Place water tank inside shed and add a wood burning stove and a high efficiency wall mount propane heater with a small solar setup connected to a portable battery(because most of the propane heaters have a built in electric push button ignition switch) and that should easily prevent your water from freezing. You can run a trench line and bury your water conduit with however much earth it takes to insulate the line from freezing. Though I don't know what method you can use to insulate the line from freezing where it ties into the cabin from the ground. I live in north central TX and our winters don't get as intense as they do in your neck of the woods.
Feel free to send me an email if you like the ideas and want to pick my brain(jasonswearingin@live.com)! Besides getting to pick your brain will be interesting. I've got minimal construction experience and have some soon needed home repair/upkeep projects from the last 2 years of severe spring time hail storms.
24:15 A water well would be a very good idea. Although you'll need to insulate the hoses or pipes depending on what your planning to use so it doesn't freeze underground. At least having a back up for anything you make would be good in case your main resource gets stopped by some sort of event.
Also for a refrigerator they also have solar powered ones online when i went looking around. That way you don't had to risk it with propane if you wanna try that instead.
Great video! Exciting new projects! Thanks for taking the camera along to pick up your old engines. That was a treat!
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm always happy to see a new video on your chanel, it was lovely to see that older couple and all the cool stuff they had managed to collect over their lifetime.
As a former member of a framing crew you make the process look fun and easy. I am ashamed of my skill set compared to yours. Never had a raccoon enter through our cat door.
Old Chris outta make quick work of that damn racoon😂
My Cousin up in Washburn, Maine, got a hit or miss going for the historical society up there! Hope you can get it going 🎉
Nice add on there Kevin, enjoying your progress and loved the drone intro footage ,all your builds being shown looked cool as,you sure keep busy 😊
This dude and his bro are the top dogs of outdoor youtube yet underrated as feck much love kevin
Thx for filming this and sharing it with us.
Love the intro
Good video Kevin! Like where you're putting the windows should make for a great view! Like the ideas you have for the rest of the cabin sounds really good. Hope you can find a use for the hit miss engines you got, sure you'll find a use for them. Hope the new blade works well for you, don't have one myself. Sorry to hear about the chicken's man hopefully you'll be able to find more. Looking forward to your next video Kevin, take care man.
Hey Kevin. Regarding the washroom. Have you considered a DIY septic tank. You have the gear to dig it out and I am sure you can can find a vessel. The only issue I fforesee is maybe local building ordinances. Also, the old guys shed was amazing. I find it a bit sad that people don´t appreciate the depth of knowledge and skill he has amassed over his lifetime. It shows in his projects and workshop.
Hey Kevin, love your videos. Looking a little over grown over there, keep making your content ,good stuff.
Maintaining or building . It's really hard to do both at the same time.
I get it, just teasing my northern neighbor.
Check out, boss of the swamp. He had one. He built out of phone that in the winter time had a little doorway that goes to the outside with screen on the outside of it so the bugs can't get in and it lessens in cold air and then in the summer time, I think he just put big old ice blocks in it and it stayed.Cold all the time
Drone shots on Kevin's channel... Nice!! The intro has a whole new vibe. Love it.
Hands down an ez freeze fridge. Reliable, good warranty and efficient.
Loved the intro. Very chill and inspiring.
thinks are looking great now everywhere is maturing nicely, you should maybe do some renovation, update videos on the past project, everything needs a little TLC occasionally.
Another great video Kevin. Happy weekend!
I hear very good things about the Cinderella toilet. It's an incinerator toilet.I don't know what it's electronic requirements are.I leave that research up to the pros
Awesome 👍🏼😎👍🏼
Helluva old barn collection video!!
Some really nice old Put-Put engines!!! Gallon of evaporust in a big tupperware container and a can of old engine green and you'll have some museum pieces.
Honestly a reason to call up DebossGarage in Dunnville, Ont and get em going strong, and get a collaboration with the auto youtube world!
I think and plan a lot like you do. I have done so for over 40 years. When you were in the kitchen talking about a refrigerator, I wondered if you considered a motorhome refrigerator. The one I have in my Class C RV runs on propane or 12 volt. Maybe consider putting the propane tank outside to save space inside. When you were sitting on the little deck and talking about a bigger deck, I like that idea. Definitely needs a railing, either wood or metal, but I would forgo any glass in the railing. The environment doesn't seem like a good fit for glass in a railing. Maybe some decorative chicken wire if you feel it needs to be more enclosed. I like cabin-type wood railings, like a wooden X below the bar. Bathroom toilet...consider an incinerator toilet. Pricey, but I'm sure you could scrounge one up somewhere.
I love your channel.
BTW, there are motorhome junkyards that you could get all kinds of ideas from.
We had the same mill you have at my old job an we used windshield washer fluid in our tank when we cut pine an it worked great from keeping the blade from gumming up from sap
Those hit and miss Motors would be awesome powering your crusher.
Beautiful opening scene
Two things you could do to make using the Outhouse a bit more enjoyable. One, put a small woodstove in it. Two, do what Martin from TheNorthwoodsman1 does. He keeps the toilet seat in the cabin. Anyone who needs to use the outhouse, takes the seat out with them, then returns it to the cabin, afterward. You'll always have a warm seat, that way!
you guys are amazing
Thought you and Don had started a new programme "Canadian Pickers" 🤣. Great channel Kevin, been following for years now. 👍🏻👌🏻😊
When that gentleman said that the early engines also ran on COAL OIL, it took me back over 50 years to when my great-uncle Jake referred to Kerosene as coal oil. ❤
I thought he said "corn oil". I wasn't sure what he meant.
Real nice build. Im enjoying your vids. I would think of real working shudders as to protect Windows during windy storms. 👌
Used stainless steel milk truck hauling bed.
Set it high on posts and use it for storage and pressure for water.
The Amish here mount them in the 2nd floor of the barn and the horses and milk cows provide plenty of heat to keep from freezing.
My grandparents had an in ground cistern on the hill above their house. Water storage that doesn’t freeze and has gravity feed.
Certainly doable, i.e., the gravity fed water from well run with solar. No batteries required when pumped into a water container when the sun is shining. That's the kind of water system I have going. For the water tank, I used a concrete septic tank, cleaned and painted inside with potable water sealer and buried to avoid freezing. Maintenance is rather low if water is relatively clean (little silt coming in). Water into your cabin may need to go through some settlement filters and, after testing the water, perhaps running over a UV light to kill any bacteria, etc. OR use a counter water filter inside the cabin for drinking and cooking. Good idea 👍
railings are an obstruction, pulled 1x1s off my deck and it really opens up the space
Sweet intro neighbor! Ya know I started your channel with the Hobbit "house" root cellar and I'm glad I stayed. Look at all that you have accomplished!
I am slowly working on converting my Shed into a little Man Cave get away.. Maybe I will do a video series on it? Great video thanks for sharing cheers from Simcoe County!
I can recommend Unique Off Grid Appliances propane fridges. We put their smallest model Unique 3 propane fridge in our island cottage about 6 years ago. It works great, and sips propane. In July/Aug, it never uses more then one standard size BBQ tank of propane per month.
Unique Off Grid Appliances is a Canadian company based in Oakville, Ontario (not that far from you). They have a showroom there! I also own one of their 12/24 VDC fridges, that never leaves my Tacoma or hunt camp - it also sips energy.
Unique sells through distributors like Home Hardware, Cosco, Cabin Depot, and many others. If you call them directly, they often have scratched or dented models that can save you $ !
Thar old gents shed and contents are awesome. Any type of project you have what you need to make it happen.
I love peeking thru and seeing great things.
Looking forward to the sled build
I bought my property from a mechanical hoarder ... this guy just kept building buildings to keep the hoards until his wife she didn't want to see anymore buildings so he built them out of her sight. He helped lots of people FIX anything and everything mechanical. He was the maintenance guy at the Mill until it closed down ... he bought/got stuff from the Mill. They cleared most of stuff but left dump piles and attics with remnants of stuff.
This guy is organized but still looks like CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome).
I grew up with hoarder grandparents so have these tendencies.
