  • Also known as the Mission Beach Roller Coaster, this iconic woodie was designed by Fred Church & Frank Prior. It opened in 1925 & had two names changes (Roller Coaster & Earthquake) before falling into disrepair in the 1970s. It closed in 1976 & was scheduled for demolition before a group of citizens intervened & had it designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1987. After a $2 million restoration it reopened in 1990 & remains as popular as it was in its first 30 years of operation.
    Belmont Park is located in San Diego, California.

    First Roller Coaster I ever went on. Amazingly fun without being scary. This is the type of ride I enjoy.

      Along with the other Giant Dipper in Santa Cruz. The one in Santa Cruz is more out and back. While the one here is more a Twister design. The Santa Cruz one is a bit fast with more air time, while this one has more lateral forces. But both are all time classics and both are rendered California Historic Landmark's.

    I used to ride this when I was a kid back in the 1960s It was 15 cents to ride They had a lot of rides back then this was called Belmont Park they even had a haunted house You could ride a car through And the octopus ride and the scrambler the wild mouse ride and the Hammerhead .

    • @erikrupp692
      @erikrupp692 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I loved the Octopus! I went on that as a kid in the 70's - with my dad. He told me not to be scared. I ended up LOVING it, but my dad couldn't handle it. 🤣 ("Dad, let's go on it again!" "No, no, I need to sit down...")

      My grandparents and our aunt used to take my brother's and there every Saturday, we kids never went on the roller coaster, we were too young, but they had many rides that we loved, my brother Willy and I used to go on the boat ride, we always got stuck in the middle, I sure miss those days. I'm deathly afraid of heights so even as I got older, I never went on any roller coasters.

      In the early 70's you could see the track flexing as the train went by on one of the dips, it almost looked like the train was actually lifting off the track. There was an accident around that same time also, I don't remember all the details. It was kinda spooky in the 80's, at night, sitting there all by itself with just whatever ambient light happened to be hitting it. Pretty fun now though, I'm glad it's still going.

    I went on this when I went to Mission Beach... I love roller coasters, but it was so rickety and loud that I got off at the end with a complete, big headache. If it was smooth it would have been great, though. (Mission Beach/Bay is my favorite vacation place.)

    I stared at that coaster from our family's favorite hotel from 1976 to 1990, dreaming of riding it someday. In 1990, I was staring at it from a chair on the beach, and saw a train whiz around a turn. I jumped up and begged my dad to drive me there. I think I rode it 10 times in a row. It's a fun little coaster. I tried to ride it last January, but it was being repaired. It's back open now.

    • @grapiken7766
      @grapiken7766 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh my god! I know that feeling... Being fascinated by something. It always seems scarier and more intense watching it than actually riding it though. I would love to go on this one day. If I win the lottery!

    The first roller coaster ride over one time. My mother was pregnant, and she forgot. She remembered as it started to climb towards the top of the ride. One of the stories I almost missed but fortunately she told me before she died. My brother was five at the time and was waiting on the platform with my grandfather. He said, “ I remember that. That was you?”

      We had just moved from Illinois to San Diego. They took a 1957 Chevy nomad all the way on route 66 California. They had a tent accessory that attached to the top that they slept in. Grandpa and the two siblings slept inside the car. my dad said he remembered the freeway being built along the side of the road. I can only assume that was I 70 along route 66. Get your kicks on route 66 indeed.

    I've been trying to explain to my cousin that rollercoasters are totally safe, but he is still afraid he will fall out, or that the chain will snap. I'd like to know, how often would a chain snap or someone fall out of their seat?

    • @gigibergem8208
      @gigibergem8208 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The chain breaking will never happened I never in my life heard the roller coaster chain in my life and falling out of a roller coaster is more possible but, VERY unlikely it only happens when the lap bars doesn’t go all the way down. I know this is a old comment but, I hope this helps.

    Don't go on this if you have back pain, neck pain, nerve disorders...I've been bedridden for a week since I've went as I have stage 3 crps. I shouldn't have done it but we were visiting San Diego and I have memories on this ride from when I was healthy and a little girl and I didn't think it would be as bad as it was
    Even healthy people were complaining of major whiplash. Such a classic roller coaster and love belmont park. Just don't do what I did thinking I could handle it as I can handle other roller coasters. This is much different.

    The first time I rode this I hurt my neck. Then last week I rode on it 5 times in one day and my right quadriceps got real sore. It's like the lap bar was giving my quadricep a charlie horse 😳

    Hi CoasterForce, I love your videos. Do you know what is the tallest roller coaster out of all the Six Flags parks? (and how tall it is) I live near the Six Flags of America park, would you say our coasters here are tall compared to the others? Thanks :)
