Young Couple Needed Help In OVERGROWN Garden | CLEAN UP | Garden Rescue | YARD TRANSFORMATION

  • This young couple needed some garden assistance in a house they had recently moved into. I got a call to go and take a look and there was no way I could say no.
With a little TLC this garden could be amazing. Although it wasn't one of my free jobs, I instantly came up with a plan to charge a lower rate than normal and try to make a cool video out of it. A win, win scenario.
This awesome couple even took away all the waste to the local garden waste recycling for me as its free for homeowners to use (I would have had to pay to dispose of it). Their help was really appreciated.
Hope you enjoy this little yard transformation video.
And as always, thanks for viewing.
    Martin.

I follow a lot of Americans on TH-cam that do this work. What I've noticed is that you trim hedges and plants and whatever needs trimming. They just butcher everything. They literally chop everything down. Thank you for not doing that. This looks amazing. Great job 👏👏🙏❣️

A lot of the American ones are mowing/clearing services. And they do a great job of cleaning up overgrown properties; however, they neither claim to be - nor are they - gardeners (a whole 'nother level of skill!).

Yeah 🤣 quite a few invasive plans. So far, so good with keeping them under control, though.

I just discovered your channel and will be watching all of your videos backward to the beginning. You have your work cut out for you in this garden as she said lots of invasive plants here. I'd love to watch part 2 of this yard. I'm in Green Bay, WI, USA. I'm handicapped now, but before I was an avid gardener and maintained 3 properties. I can't do that anymore so I watch those that can on TH-cam. I also agree that lawn guys here in the US butcher everything they don't know. It makes me want to scream at them. They also don't understand how to cut down very overgrown shrubs that will come back once cut down severely nor the difference between a scrub and a bush. I know it's not in their understanding or knowledge level to know gardening, but they should have some basic knowledge. I try to forgive but it's hard. I love when you tell us the kinds of plants you find. On camera, it's hard for us to see what kind of plants they are so you informing us is wonderful. Please do more of that either on-screen or voice-over. When you find a Jem under something do you move it to a new home or toss it? Moving gems is how I filled in many of my garden beds. Do you have to educate and ask your clients about what you're doing or do they trust your judgment? Just wondering. I love your work and I find most of my favorite garden shows are abroad. Keep up the great work Martin. ❤

Oh, hi, I have only just seen this comment. Thank you very much. I'll try and answer your questions.
Most of my paid clients do actually give me total autonomy in their gardens. Most I've been doing for years.
And the free community work I do is pretty much the same. I suppose their just happy I'm helping them out 😅
I've never been keen on totally wiping out a garden, Most of the I believe you simply don't have to. Even when it's crazy overgrown. You may have guessed, but I'm an organic gardener. I've always found working with nature, is far easier than working against it.
Not to sound stupid, but is WI Wisconsin? Green Bay, it sounds very beautiful 😊
Anyway, thank you very much for watching. It's totally appreciated.
I look forward to more of your comments.
      Thanks again
      Martin.

I LOVE the scalloped hedge! What fun! Great job with all the pruning! The couple may want to take out the bamboo before ti completely takes over the yard. It is terribly aggressive, spreading through the roots. You can already see that it has spread in to another area from where it was planted. If not removed, it will try to turn the entire yard in to a bamboo thicket! We call them non-native invasives here, plants that are not native and spread easily. That pampas grass in the front corner is another invasive here. Takes over ditch banks all over, out-competing native plants that support the wildlife and insects.

    • @martinthegardenguy
      @martinthegardenguy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

Yeah, as usual you're not wrong 😊 I'm not sure why anyone would plant it in the ground. It was hard to see, but it was even popping up in the driveway.
About the pampas grass, I feel like I've spent hundreds of hours digging up this plant over the years 🤣 it can put up a hell of a fight. It's far worse than any tree I've ever taken out.

I imagine the previous orchestrator/s of this lovely, almost exotic back garden have many fond memories of design, planting, watching growth, planning future additions. Undoubtedly, the new owners will appreciate your care, accuracy, hard work and gathering up of tree branches, green waste and debris blown in from the street. A serene, comfy and peaceful respite for them. Thank you, Martin, for sharing with us. 🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊

With only one exception, I wouldn't have planted bamboo or pampas grass! 🤣

If that’s Japanese bamboo around the 20:00 minute mark, good luck to them. Those things are lovely to look at but if you give them a chance, they’ll cause havoc and are impossible to eradicate. I fight with them constantly in my garden here in Japan!😂

Yeah, it's definitely not my favorite garden plant. People have known for many years that it's not something they should be putting in the ground. Yet they still do, and garden centers keep selling it.
At least it's slightly better than Japanese Knotweed 🤣
Beautiful plant, but it needs to stay in its natural setting. I.e. being eaten by Panda 🐼 🤣

What a cute garden that is! 😍It's quite cozy even though it sits by a busy road. I prefer more quiet spots myself, so that I can forget there is a world out there! I try to shield out the traffic with a fence, a hedge, trees that dip below the view-line if I can. I need to fix that problem out front at "Pork-Chop Hill" (🤣The one spot Momma couldn't get much to grow... it was her nemesis! Any time she'd get ready to weed it, she'd say I'm off to "The Battle of Pork-Chop Hill"! To this day, it will always be known for that!) I can see right through to the road with only one house between it and us, There's a big-ole gas station beyond the road I can see! EWWWW!!! 🤢 Who wants THAT to be in their view??
I cringed at their Bamboo.. our neighbor has a stand that's been running under our shared fence, and it pops up everywhere! Here in the PNW it is a rabid grower and a thorn in my side. I loved their undulating hedges you trimmed up so beautifully, and their lawn is petite and sweet. There wasn't a back yard I'm guessing... You did a fantastic job as usual, Martin. You always do!
Well, I'm back out to the Potager now, and I'm half-way done. I could barely move when I was done the other day, so I begged off yesterday and watched my Art videos. (I'm a mixed media artist.) I felt like such a lazy-butt though. At least the weather was questionable. Today however the sun is pouring into our Lakewood Washington yard at "Dove's Nest". (It's what Momma & Daddy named their property here.) Wish me luck! 💛🖤💛 Stacy

That bamboo needs to go. It’s a beast to get rid of. So odd to see plants we have in So California thriving and invading there. Hopefully they’ll realize the ivy needs to come out of the tree along with bamboo and pampas grass. It’s a pretty garden - just needs the owner to spend some money getting it in order. It would keep you busy! 🎉😊

You make a great point about the Ivy. Most people think it actually harms trees, but it doesn't do any harm at all, especially if the tree is healthy. It does look unattractive to some, but personally, I love it.
It's actually not a true parasite, as it needs roots in the ground to survive.
I like to keep it out of borders, however, as it can easily swamp out smaller plants.
It's quite an important habitat for 100s of creatures. Especially late year food for pollinators.
Hope you begin to love the Ivy like me 😊
Thanks again, all the best, Martin.

    Hi Martin
Would you call that garden a formal style in England with the plants cut into hedges and rounded shapes?
Do you have clients who like the more natural look with plants allowed to grow without so much shaping?
    Interested to know
    Thank you 🦘❤️❤️❤️

    • @martinthegardenguy
      @martinthegardenguy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi
Some people would call if formal, and others not. I think it's more personal taste than a given style.
To me, formal gardens are lots of well-kept box hedges/or similar and symmetrical shapes and paths. Like what you'd see on old colonial estates.
      But that's my opinion 😊👍
I do have quite a few clients who like a more wild garden and many that have cottage garden styles. But eventually, every hedge or shrub will need cutting back (in a standard garden). Otherwise, there'd be no space 😆
And then you have to decide how to trim it, it'd be really difficult to trim a shrub that looked natural, definitely beyond my skill level 🤣
Fantastic question though, it got my brain cells working 🤣

I understand in small gardens plants would need to be pruned often as space doesn’t allow them to grow freely
I belong to Hurstbridge Garden Club , forty kilometres NE of the city, many members have larger properties and plenty of garden area and only slightly prune
My garden is not large compared to others in the club so I tend to grow bushes that don’t have a large growing habit so I can keep their natural shape with little pruning
We open our gardens to other members and we share cuttings, as a matter of fact most of my garden plants have been propagated from cuttings over the last 14 years we have lived here
I love your Channel and best wishes for the future

To be fair, there's never going to be enough time to do everything. I do what I can in the time I've got.
The borders and rest of the shrubs will be done on the next visit 👍

Yeah, it got left in.....no way I'm tackling that monster. I'm too old 🤣
Although, so far, it doesn't seem to be causing any massive problem. It's not something I would plant in the ground. I have a few dwarf varieties in containers.
But generally speaking, it's on my lost on "never plant" plants 😅🤣
      Cheers
      Martin
