    I love this video. It's freeing. I will try using the larger needle. I love hand quilting and you make big stitch quilting fun.

    How do you hold the quilt if you are working a full-sized quilt

    Do you find using a larger needle makes it easier to sew without a thimble? I like thimbles to protect my skin but they always feel so cumbersome.

      I can’t use a thimble. Wish I could sometimes 😂

    I tried to learn to hand quilt with the tiny quilting needles and we aimed for 12 stitches per inch. My grandmother and her contemporaries could do it, but I never got good at it. They sat around a large frame and put one hand under the quilt to guide the needle back up to the top. I am excited to try your method. Thanks for showing us how you do it! There is really nothing like a hand quilted quilt. I have done many on my domestic sewing machine and they are nice too, but the hand quilted are very special.

    How would you hand quilt with a large quilt? I don't think you would be able to bunch it up in your hand .I am going to try this on my finished quilt, so I am curious how this would be done.

      Hi Pearl, I sought of fold it over and scrunch it up. Takes a little bit of manipulation but can be done.😊

      I am not experienced and I am busy with my second queen sized 100% hand pieced and quilted quilt. I keep it like an oven glove. I tried leaving my quilt flat on my table when I quilt but then I don’t quite catch the back like I’d like to. The “oven glove” method works for me. I also sit at a large table and my quilt is on the table and the weight is off my arms.

    I love the look of this! It's cool that this is again very popular... this is the ony kind of quilting that I ever used, back in the day when I hand quilted my quilts. I think it's time to do this once more. Thanks for sharing. Take care, blessings to y'all.

    Do you use a larger quilt in the same way? Or make theses into separate sections?

    • @ElsieGrays
      @ElsieGrays  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Sue,
      If your looking to make a larger version of this I would join your main two pieces together then start adding your shapes on. This way you should be able to hide the seam with the shapes if placed carefully. I hope this helps.😊

    Thank you for this tutorial. I have asked you a couple times, and you came through! I watched many videos on how to big stitch quilt and they’re all a bit different. Yours uses a much longer needle, but I can see the advantage.

    I started hand sewing and hand quilting three years ago. Save for five months last year because I took the time out to deliver the large story memory quilt I had hand pieced and hand quilted, I have now quilted nearly every day on average 3-4 hours a day for 12 months. I am right handed and my left wrist has begun to ache terribly. Have you had any issues in your hands and how have you solved it? Thank you.

      Hi, That is a lot of hand sewing over a long period. You certainly are dedicated!!! I do get some soreness from time to time which is generally a sign to switch projects for a while. Consider doing this so you don't burn yourself out. 😊

      @@ElsieGrays thank you. I am 67 and I wanted to make 4 memory/story quilts by hand for my granddaughter and my three children. I am nearly done with the second quilt and have two to go. These are my first sewing projects. I will take your advice and see how it goes. Thank you.

    Can you fo a full size quilt this way?

    • @ElsieGrays
      @ElsieGrays  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can but depending on the size of your background fabric you may need a join. I would work out how big you would like to make it first then look what options you have in fabrics that can avoid a join.😊

    I have just subscribed to your channel. The quilting you did turned out lovely! I have been quilting a medallion quilt with big stitch. But I am not coordinated enough to use only one hand. So I use one hand on top, one on the bottom of the quilt. Size 9 chenille needles and 12 wt. Perle cotton have worked for me so far. Perhaps my stitches are not perfect. But the organic feel of them softens the VERY geometric quilt pattern.
