Hi everyone, Joel explores making his own homemade lump charcoal for his Kamado Joe. You certainly can buy your own lump charcoal, but you never know where that wood comes from or if it has been exposed to chemicals. So in other words, I guess you could almost call this organic. Tune in to see how Joel progresses.
Also, we are excited to share with you some great news. We have partnered with TeeSpring to open a Midwest Hunting and Outdoors by 2 Dumb Asses store. This offers secure payment and great pricing. Please check it out. We are continuing to add new products to that store. We appreciate your support.

I drilled 5 1/2" holes in the bottom of mine and use it as a retort. Much more efficient and I don't overcook.

To help with how much wood you use to do this think about running the exhaust back under the barrel so that it helps with the burn. If you stand the barrel upright, wrap it in insulation and feed its exhaust into the fire you should be way ahead.

You can penetrate the barrel with a small diameter pipe that goes out the bottom and all the gas will burn to help your fire, less wood used

you want to pack as much wood in the barrel as you can, tight pack is better than loose pack.

@@midwesthuntingoutdoors The idea behind getting the best char is to have as little oxygen in the tank as possible. The best way to do that is to pack in as much wood as you can. Your after the gasses that come from the wood not the excess air around a loose pack. It will work with a loose pack but just not as efficient.
