Thank you, Mike. Finally, a TH-cam horticulturist that shows the results of the methods employed. You're right. There are far too many gardening videos where a person shows what they did on Day 1, but they never show you if their technique was successful on Day 60, 90, etc. You not only showed what worked (water); you showed what did not work. Alas, someone used the scientific method on this platform. I'm very grateful, Mike. I just split my dracaena that was touching my 8 foot ceiling and put the leafy top in a large jar of simple water based upon your video.
Mike, I need your guidance. Badly, I am watching your propagation video on Dracaenea. (Sorry spelling) I have one tiny tuft, that is not doing well. I want to try and save on a 4ft stick. This is a baby from a 32 year old plant I had die off suddenly. The trunk was 2'diameter. That layer read in News should never had been sold or obtained from Home Depot. The thickness put age at approximately 300 yrs old. So this pathetic little shoot is Dear to me. Being a baby I saved from this ancient tree illegally harvested from Madagascar. I felt like a trust of sorts. My Duty. So this baby I propogated now for 15 years and kept needs help again. I literally have 2- 4' twigs with a very sickly plum of leaves now. That is it. So want to Start over and try to save. Was sold as a "Madagascar Dragon Tree" which it was a tree though very short. 😢

This channel has been the best thing I've found for plant propagation! So many channels tell you what to do but dont walk you through it and show the results. The way you do helps people like me who are more kinetic/hands on learners. Thank you so much!
Hello from France. I grew one dracaena cutting only in water, wedged with little stones, adding some liquid fertilizer once a month, for at least two years. When it was high enough, I cut the tip and it made three new tips, with leaves up. After this time, I planted it in soil and it accepted well this change. So you can use hydroculture or soil for this indoor plant.
May the Lord bless you ! I was just looking for the exact experiment to take on with my sister’s plant. I needed to make sure before I cut it as she loves the plant like your wife loves it. Thank you, sincerely, for your video! I learned a lot. I like how honest you are! God bless you! 💛

Your video was great cause we learned a lot .I just this summer cut up some dracaenas and just stuck a head cutting in potting soil with a just potted pothos and had really good results the soil was kept the same as all the rest of my plants . try to start them by laying the stalks horizonal in the top inch of the soil cut to about four inches each. you can also rubber band several together and after rooting separate

I bought two plants from work that they didn’t want. The soil hasn’t been changed in years I cut the tips off and stuck them in water. They rooted. I left the two stalks in the pot and only watered it once a week because I thought it would die but had hope. Well my hope worked. A new plant grew from the BOTTOM of the pot!

Wow.... hi Mike, how interesting ,I just did the same experiment with my dracaena last month and just like yours only the two sticks in the water rooted.I was just thinking how should i put them in soil so they won't spoil. And here you are, the double cup method . It's awesome, thank you so much.
I came back from the store and saw that my corn plant snapped 😞 in the middle of my living room. I had to find a way to re-pot. Your video was so helpful. I'm going to try and plant in water. Thank you for sharing the video.
I took 2, 1 gallon ice cream buckets,. and drilled drain holes in the bottom of one, drilled 2 holes at the rim of both and took the other one, flipped it over for a lid and used a small piece of rope and tied together as a hinge. Works perfectly. And large enough to put several plants in it.
Mike, I did something similar in Dec. 2020. Planted two tops, two rooted stems, and 8 stem pieces in soil. The tops did fine. Six months later I threw away 6 of the pieces. A week later new growth started on the two rooted stalks and two pieces of stem. The pieces of stem later died, but the rooted stalks are doing well now. I was blown away that it took over 6 months for the rooted stems to put on new growth. Love your channel and your passion.
Similar thing happened to me with monstera...I had put them in a humidity dome w coco and after 40 days nothing! I forgot about them and ended up with several monstera around springtime@
So from what I see on video, I will definitely go with water. Then if hopefully , I get roots I will try your Two cup Method to try and get them planted. Wish me Luck. After all this time this plant is family. I have some older than my adult children. LOL.
You didn't use any rooting hormone. I had no idea what it was called but that looks just like a plant my wife had. I cut mine back and stuck the sticks with to growth in the buckets and they grew fine. I think I might have used hormone though. Point being they can root in soil. Good luck Mike, thanks as always, and great health to you and yours.
@@MikeKincaid79 I recommend you to try the method of tying up the shoot until the aerial roots have sprouted. This is a very effective but forgotten method used by our grandmothers.

Where do you sell your plants at. Thank you again for being so positive and homeschooling is the best. My son is 33 and tells everyone how thankful he is now for his homeschooling. Keep it up, you rock!!!
Hey ! Just started getting into gardening and propagating here in South Florida ! I can see ur videos are going to be my “ go to “ . love the before and after - feels fool proof . However, as a beginner, my question is about the water - the color made me think that it wasn’t changed too often . Should the water be changed over the two months plus, before u move the cuttings and slowly acclimate them to the soil in the deli containers ? I realize urs were intended as house plants but I’m gonna try my tricolored Dracaenas outdoors in tropical weather Florida . Wish me luck !! Thanks for the video !
;), The results of your experiment were exactly 180 degrees opposite to what I expected to happen. I completely thought the 2 rooted plants in pots were a sure thing, that they would leaf out and grow well, then the cuttings in soil would be about 50% success and the 2 cuttings in water would quickly rot. Hi Mike, good to see you! Great video! That's interesting how plants behave differently from one to another sort of speak. Henry was on the roll 😅😅😅made my day! Hugs to you and the girls! 🤗💜🤗
If you ever repeat this, I would put the stems in to the potting mix dry, not wet, and don't water them for a while (so same as frangipani). Then they won't rot. I've had about 75% success rate doing that way.
Hi Mike. My Spiked Dracaenas are growing/thriving in an outside garden in the NW USA (I never overwinter). I have one that's 42" tall. At the ground surface, its still green, no brown bark/stalk. It's too big for the area. Can I cut it back at ground level to have it start over as a smaller plant the following season? If so, when should I do the pruning? Thanks.
Ok, I'm going up to deal with mine I refer to as, the "Rockette's". I am going to build on your work and I'm saving this video so if I make a video, I will be able to site it as my jumping off point. There's a couple ideas I have that are kind of a pain in the rear but I think the results may be promising.
What is the best soil for these plants? I just purchased 2 Dracaena Marginatas from Lowe's. I found out they both of the plants were drenched in water. I repotted them using Miracle Gro Potting Soil, but the leaves are yellowing. I added systemic insect treatment. I'm in Lynchburg, VA, and I'm unsure as to whether or not I purchased soul from a bad batch or should consider a different soil.
Question Mike….. do you have a video about propagating Coneflowers or echinacea from cuttings? I know you can divide but I don’t have any plants mature enough to divide and want to try cuttings. Any thoughts?
I don't have videos on that but sounds like a fun project. People ask about peonies all the time too, so maybe I need to start working with all those plants.
Well that’s pretty crazy. I’m gunna do that. I have a plant that is maybe fifty or more years old. All the leaves are above the window on the ceiling and bent over with a rope supporting the stem partly by the curtain rod. Yeah, so it is about time to see if I can repot one from a cutting.
Thanks for sharing Mike, I have 2 that are around 6-7 feet tall, I want to try air layering the tallest to start another tree, I’ll let you know how it works out.
Thank you this was a great video. How do you make sure you don’t get fungus gnats when you do the double pot with the soil soaked in water? Every time I accidentally overwater a plant, it seems like I instantly have a gnat problem. I’ve just trimmed up a dying mass cane and put the stems in water. I want to follow your whole process but I’m worried about the fungus gnats.
LOL Kinda obvious about the water. I generally put cuttings in water before repotting. Gotta get the roots going no matter what. H2O almost never fails. Thanks mate!
I like the way you do follow ups on your propogation videos. I've seen some where they show rootimg money tree leaves and getting a new plant form it. I am suspicious of this as I have never seen a follow up results video. I know that there are some plants where it is possible to root a plant from only a leaf. There are some others that will grow roots on the leaves but it will not give you a new plant just a huge leaf. Could you do a video on money trees and show us whether or not you can get a new plant from just the leaf?
Great Video.i took some cuttings without any leafs and they never took either. Only the cuttings with leafs rooted. Has anyone had success from just stick cuttings?
Oh, that was fun. I am curious as to why the one good one died back. Whatever caused that may have been the reason the other dirt attempts didn’t work. More mysteries to solve! Woohoo. So far, I’ve only attempted pruning, but I haven’t gone for a big chop like you did. I left some green on top. You are the boss, Mike. Appreciate you for all you share, brother (No hormone?)
Yeah, I was really perplexed with the healthy plant dying back but I did beat it up pretty good, lol. Just thought I'd try it without hormone but I'll have to do another project with the hormone to compare.
Hey Mike. My plants has extra roots growing from higher up on the stem. I think u call them buds. What exactly is it and do I cut them off. The stem is so bumpy and not clean like yours. I say bumpy cause I don't know if it's roots , air roots or buds. But it has alot around the crown of the stem. Or the part between the main stem and the lower parts of the stem that branched out where there is growth. If that makes sense.
Funny, I transplanted and trimmed my grandmas in soil and it survived. I cut it so there was no leaves, trimmed the roots, put it back in soil, and it grew back in a month. That tree was in the same pot for at least 20 years she said. And still is, just newly trimmed.
"Never show the results" Yes, reminds me of a few TH-cam videos of people enthusiastically rooting apple cuttings (and never showing results). One video showed a man attempting to root a grape cluster from the store (with grapes removed). Of course he never showed the results. Technically, it might be possible - the DNA and live cells are there... but I would think it would take some fancy laboratory techniques to pull off. On apples, as you've shown, a slow layering process of some sort seems to work best.
Hi trying to propagate a small branch that was snapped off plant at work. Its about 4 inches long no leaves on but small green sprout at top. Ive put in water but starting to feel squashy at the end, is this normal in water or is it rotting? TIA
It's hard for me to say without seeing it, but if it looks mushy then it might be rotting. I'd snip that part off and start over with clean distilled water.
My dracaena has grown a lot and now it has like a long sprout with many litle white flowers, ot they look like flowers....I like to have a new plant out of it, but I dont know how to do it. Could you give me some suggestion about this. Thanks a lot, Ramon.
I had a sad shoot on my mom's 20+ year dracaena that I've started taking care of because she's unable to now, I cut it into 12-15 cuttings and about 3 weeks in it looks like just about all of them are starting to grow tiny little hairs. None of them look rotted. I did all of them in water and I have them on a covered porch with bright indirect light. Only 2 of them had leaves left on them. I think water is the much safer bet.
Thank you, Mike. Finally, a TH-cam horticulturist that shows the results of the methods employed. You're right. how often did you change the water in those cups? and did you use tab water or filtered water?
thank you Mike
I changed it twice over the whole process and just used tap water.
Fantastic
Well that’s pretty crazy. I’m gunna do that. I have a plant that is maybe fifty or more years old. All the leaves are above the window on the ceiling and bent over with a rope supporting the stem partly by the curtain rod. Yeah, so it is about time to see if I can repot one from a cutting.
Very interesting, thank you.
You're welcome!
Hey I’ve got one that’s about 20 years old or so, growing in a gallon glass jar, but needs repotting. Might have to try cuttings also.
Wow, 20 years old. That’s really cool. Yeah, the water cuttings were the way to go for sure. I’m going to experiment more with it though.
@@MikeKincaid79 figure out a secure way and I’ll send you a pic.
Thanks for sharing Mike, I have 2 that are around 6-7 feet tall, I want to try air layering the tallest to start another tree, I’ll let you know how it works out.
That sounds like a fun project. 6 to 7 feet! Man, you must have had that for awhile.
Coeld you give a update on the air layering?
Thank you this was a great video. How do you make sure you don’t get fungus gnats when you do the double pot with the soil soaked in water? Every time I accidentally overwater a plant, it seems like I instantly have a gnat problem. I’ve just trimmed up a dying mass cane and put the stems in water. I want to follow your whole process but I’m worried about the fungus gnats.
I use yellow sticky paper and mosquito bits for gnats.
I think you turned some of the ones without leaves upside down when you put them in the water. Could that be the reason they didn’t make it?
I’d have to go back and watch but I’m pretty sure I got them right side up.
Can draecenas be cuttings be orooagated in water?
I can work on that. Are talking about pothos?
@@MikeKincaid79 Pachira Aquatica is the species name I believe. There's a Corn Plant also called a Money Tree (Roberta's Garden)
@@loloholmes2793 Yes that is the plant I was thinking of.
Great Video.i took some cuttings without any leafs and they never took either.
Only the cuttings with leafs rooted.
Has anyone had success from just stick cuttings?
I don't know but I sure didn't. Good to hear confirmation about your experience. Seems like a lot of us are having the same experience.
Appreciate you for all you share, brother
(No hormone?)
Sounds like root initials. That’s a good thing. Just let it root!
Funny, I transplanted and trimmed my grandmas in soil and it survived. I cut it so there was no leaves, trimmed the roots, put it back in soil, and it grew back in a month.
That tree was in the same pot for at least 20 years she said. And still is, just newly trimmed.
Right on. Sure wish mine would have bounced back but I think I beat it up too much between cutting the top and pruning the roots.
What if you took the stem cuttings and did the soil “soup” method from the beginning? May be worth an experiment??
I was thinking the same thing. Waiting on the 2 little trees to get more size on them.
loved the cat cameo at 5:11 ahah
They sneak in from time to time
@@MikeKincaid79 Got to love em! Loved the content by the way! Awlays look foward to your next videos. Have a good day!
You have to change the water in the cuttings jar daily, or at least 4 X week
"Never show the results" Yes, reminds me of a few TH-cam videos of people enthusiastically rooting apple cuttings (and never showing results). One video showed a man attempting to root a grape cluster from the store (with grapes removed). Of course he never showed the results. Technically, it might be possible - the DNA and live cells are there... but I would think it would take some fancy laboratory techniques to pull off. On apples, as you've shown, a slow layering process of some sort seems to work best.
I get a lot of questions about rooting apples. One of these days I'll give it a shot. When I do, I'll film it.
Coool Mike. Ty
Very good to know!
Great! I actually learned a lot from this one too.
@@MikeKincaid79 I have some soaking now and I removed all but the top leaves. Did you swap out the water regularly?
I think I only swapped the water a few times on this one but it wouldn’t hurt to do it more often.
@@MikeKincaid79 A couple of mine are now showing roots in their water, so will be onto their soupy messes soon! Thanks again.
What kind of water were the cuttings in? Did you change the water at any point?
Just tap water. I think I changed it once for this project.
Should the stems have been callused over first??
Maybe
Did miss spoke by saying ,JohnCena can be propagated In the wild?.
I’ve had mine in a glass milk jug filled with water for about a month now and I’m not getting any roots. Any ideas
8:15 what was that that ran from under the table??
Probably one of my cats lol
@@MikeKincaid79 oh
OMGoodness. Thank you. I think you just saved me from killing my plant.
Talking with you hands or learning sign language Mike? 😁
Probably a little of both
Mike, can the water, where the cuttings are placed, be changed - let's say every two weeks? There are some odors building after couple of days
Yes, change as often as needed.
My dracaena has grown a lot and now it has like a long sprout with many litle white flowers, ot they look like flowers....I like to have a new plant out of it, but I dont know how to do it. Could you give me some suggestion about this. Thanks a lot, Ramon.
This video will show you how. I've never gotten flowers from mine. That's amazing!
I see the kitty down bellow lol😂
Lol
So, in theory, could we have rooted them in the two cups, by keeping it soupy until we see roots and then let the water evaporate and transplant?
I suppose that would work. Sounds like a good idea for a video.
Does this have to be started in spring?
Not if it’s an indoor houseplant.
I've done this, your root hormone would of helped. Was surprised you didn't use it
I'll have to do another project with the hormone
Do you change or top up the water?
I changed it once or twice
do they need to be under direct sun while rooting?
No direct sun
I have a question about growing Luna Hibiscus from seed. Do they have to be pinched back when small ?
Pinching any plant back will encourage root growth and more branching.
Could the branches be trained to be braided when they've rooted and gotten taller?
Yeah, I'm sure you could braid them. That's a really cool idea.
Thank you! No wonder my cutting died in the soil.☹️
Right on, glad to hear of your success!
