Thanks for sharing your story, really appreciate giving your accounts on ID. You went through 4 IDs, wow, I only went through 2 so far. My ID still has my birth name and gender. I am going to change my name, but not my gender marker. I'm nonbinary and currently live in Virginia. They don't have a third gender marker available in my state, so I'm sticking with my assigned marker for now. I would really like to have the 3rd gender marker since it's accurate and corresponds to who I am. At the same time, I would be concerned sharing that if I was in a more isolated and conservative area. If I show my ID to a bartender, I always have to wonder what kind of reaction I'm going to receive since we are not visible in society yet. So, I would also be okay with having no gender marker at all because of safety reasons. In an ideal situation, I would like to carry around an ID with the correct marker. So even if someone never interacted with a nonbinary person, maybe they'll be more open minded? Then again, maybe I'm being too optimistic.
I think you share a great perspective on this. I often question why gender needs to be included on anything. Does it really make a difference in most situations? Outside of medical concerns and those are more tied to "sex". I went through 4 because I took a long time to get my name changed. But, having up to date photos made me feel better :) Thank you for raising the point of safety with an NB gender maker, I've never thought of that before. Luckily IDs are relatively cheap to change, I'd suggest trying out some different ones until you feel like you have what is right for you.
You are so incredibly calm and well-spoken. Listening to you is like a form of meditation.
