The most scared I've been restoring really old irish stone cottage - Rebuilding the walls.

This week we have some tricky jobs to do before we can progress with the big renovations. After uncovering the original stone walls, there's some structural issues that need sorting before we can rectify the roof or dig out the old floor.
The gable wall we recently exposed, with its forgotten fireplace is going to look amazing once we get it repointed with our hot lime mix, we just need to fix it first!
We also tackle the large hole left from the chimney coming down.
There's big progress with our move to Ireland as we get more and more settled with the purchase of a new Irish car!

I’m stuck in bed today with the old invisible illness, you have no idea how glad I am to see one of your videos pop up. It’s very frustrating as a ‘Louise’ type of person to not be able to use your body to be productive! At least I can live vicariously and be happy someone somewhere else is getting on with things!

@campervibe we are taking on small stone cottage removed ceilings but not the structural joists yet until we get new timber , next job is removing cement render grrr then do what you doing here ..re pointing daunting like you say but has to be done , what lime mix do you use and ratio when you get time , thanks.

Well girls, what a great video of your life and trials of a builder. So glad there were no bum shots in it this time. Loved the innuendos though.
Just on a side note, I bought a new (to me) Volvo XC60 back in 2019 and it came with a free Dog Guard, which is a shame really as we don't have a dog. However it comes in very handy when packing up to go on our caravan trips as most of the luggage goes in the boot and the 'dog guard' stops it falling into the passenger spaces when I have to brake hard. Also, you can't have enough rachet straps for carrying lumps of wood and bags of sand/concrete, the tie-down points make it a simple ob to secure them in the boot-space. Keep going at it girls. you're doing s cracking job!

Emily, you should advertise the car in Northern Ireland as you are more likely to find a buyer, but it might also be actually worth driving north and seeing if you can get a trade in on a bigger car. Even on NI/UK plates, the English cars normally have higher specs and are cheaper to buy and import over an Irish equivalent. Many of us actually go north or over to the UK to buy cars. And some garages north, particularly near the border, will actually take trade ins on Irish registered cars, so they may actually have something that won’t need to be imported. The only thing to watch out for is corrosion on the underneath as the north tent to use salt on the roads in some parts which can cause trouble with brake lines etc, but overall the cars are better quality, cheaper, wider range and higher specs than the majority of Irish examples.
Ok I was typing this while watching and see you already bought the new car. So that means Louise can actually trade it in for a Landrover. You need it for the off road camping in Kerry 😉😉😉

Oh dahlinks - table from scaffolding boards? Such Lesbytarian parsimony. You are in rural Eire - there will be lots of fabulous tables on Gumtree etc from big ol' houses, which no-one else will buy as they do not have the space.
It is vital you furnish your home to this old poouff's tastes and sensibilities.

We repurposed scaffold boards into beautiful shelving for our media unit. Sanded and oiled and the grain looks stunning.

You can get insulation systems for they walls (which is breathable) and you will need it. The stones look great, but they will readily absorb and retain that cold.

great video girls, laugh a minute almost, but serious face when trying to hold the walls up, keep dreaming, it will be fantastic when its finished, and just pointing the walls will make it look so much better, and make it stronger as well. dont think that dog guard is going to hold AJ back, he might be a good boy and sit down, but i doubt it, he is always up front trying to look out the window when in the van. i thought the cover in the boot looked ok, but you do need to use the sticky velcro. and we do love the innuendo. take care girls, catch you on the next one xx

It's mind boggling to see all the work that goes into the stone work that you have to do. I would have to get a professional to come in and finish the job cause it would be to mind draining for me after a while cause I get rather bored very easily! We just bought a new Jimny. We love it!!!! It does not corner at speed and hates the wind, but, we love it!!!! Very economical, loads of fun to drive. Sexy as.

@@campervibe I used to have an old Jimny and now have a new one and I love it as well. Great wee jeep for living rurally, perfect for navigating narrow L roads and takes corners fine at sensible speeds - ye probably already do that driving a tall van anyhow. Sure the government is dropping all the speed limits on L, R and some N roads in November so everyone will have to be taking corners at sensible speeds, Jimny drivers or not!

I have never heard of pointing before , but the amount of work required for that job is amazing . The end product , will be , well worth the Squabbling , sore backs , bruised knuckles etc .

Great idea with the scaffold boards, I bought some solid oak door frames (they were cheap as someone couldn't measure 🤣) and made a dining table, changed it into a wool storage unit when we changed decor and finally, a set of steps so our Bassett Hound could get on the bed 😁
