Lurcher.. all the way...they suit us down to the ground.
We were first time dog owners, and went to RSPCA shelter and were shown a 12 week approx puppy that looked like a skeleton..not quite what I had in mind..in fact absolutely not what I had in mind...
But the shelter was filled to capacity, and the kennels she was in had 3 young dogs in ..a sister, equally thin but bigger, and I was going to say ''not for us'' when her sister mounted her vigorously...the 'underdog' literally looked so abjectly depressed and broken at that point that I said ''We'll take her.
We had to have a home visit to check for fence height [2 metres] and the pup was still too ill to re-home , so I visited her every day in the dog's home, and training her when she was released was 'easy' trigger words for a pee/poo with food reward immediately initially...I set the clock every 2 hours at night, and took her in the garden ..she was a fast learner..also a good chance to look at the frosty sky..every couple of hours. Brr
She taught us a lot, a great dog, well mannered.. there was some border collie in the mix, I think as she'd flop down on her belly when eyeing up things to run at.. Miss her so much.
Finding a new rescue centre dog of her type is harder now, as many rescue places only re-home pups to people with an existing dog.
Both of ours [we got a second, 16 months later]definitely enjoyed each other's company.....but to get two dogs together is a bad idea, as you need time to train the first before getting the second....
The second dog, a Whippet was a doddle to train, as he just copied the first.

Great video! My family adopted a GSDxAussie when she was 6 months old, she's now 8 years old. Everything you said in this video is so true and accurate. The first year when she was a "teenager" were absolute CHAOS, but once we figured out "brain work" rather than just running her for miles and miles and miles, she became the best dog ever! I loved training Remi for bikejoring, canicross, agility, and obedience. She had absolutely INSANE amounts of energy, but I was happy and eager to match it.
Looking to adopt another dog, I don't think I'd have the time or energy to work with a herding breed, but I love K9 sports and obedience. It's a constant battle in my mind of "rescue a GSD... No you idiot.... Rescue a Border Collie.... NO YOU IDIOT... rescue a Corgi... NOOO!!! Rescue an Aussie.... STILL NO!!!!" I don't know what my next dog will be, and the choice is overwhelming

Our Boston Terrier puppy was a beast. Thankfully I’m retired because he literally was my full time job. … we survived and he’s transformed into a wonderful dog, but I have no desire to get a puppy again. 😂

I’m so lost. My two dogs have both passed recently of old age. They were perfect for 16 years. I want a small breed as I’m disabled with autoimmune diseases. I’ve gone to shelters. I feel guilty for not taking the rescues I know I’d love. I don’t take them bc they are old, need surgery, or other assorted issues. I have searched far n wide. I don’t know if I’m being too picky. .
Hey it's ok, and you are being responsible by admitting this and for knowing your limitations. Dont feel guilty for knowing your limitations, this includes avoiding further heartbreak and a blow to your finances. You'll get your pupper that will be perfect for you and you for them.

Great videos, pointing out things that I didn't think of, or forgotten all together. But what about how the dog feels about you? That's a big part of how I pick a dog, even puppies. The best ones I've had were the ones that showed interest in me despite other distractions. If it's going to be a good partnership, it should be a partnership from the beginning.

Almost everybody seems to forget the biggest couch potato of all dogs. Believe it or not it's the Greyhound. They requires to run a little bit every day but the rest of the day...somewere around 15 - 20 hours...they just wanna eat and sleep. They are almost everytime an adult dog when you adopt because they are many times retired racing dogs....many Geyhounds are killed after there racing days are over....about 2-3 years...and that's a disgrace...they are really loving, kind dogs. And they don't bark! So if you are a ''comfortable'' kind of person that's the dog for you :-)
What breeds or categories of dogs would you recommend for a first time dog owner? I live in a small house with a small backyard if that helps narrow down what size of dog would be ideal.

I'm thinking about adopting a 5 yr old black GSD. She was supposedly chained up in the back yard all her life. Shes animal agressive and "mouthy".
I've spent about 1.5 hrs with her at the rescue but I havent had that "hell yes" moment. I like her and I think she likes me..there were moments where we connected.
She needs discipline, she needs exercise, and she needs a stable home.
I want a dog that I can take our for walks and maybe a park, of she ever gets along with others, but I also want a chill dog that will nap all she wants when shes home.
I dont know where I'm going with this but I need help making a determination if I should adopt or not.
Shes been at the rescue for about 1 month now. She was adopted prior but they ppl brought her back. Before that she was in the shelter for months and before that, she was chained up in the back yard.
I need some help. I like this dog, she has such great potential..I just keep talking myself out of it. I was one utterance from adopting her today but I backed out.
This girl will be my second GSD I adopted. My last man was adopted at 7 or 9 yrs old. He passed last year at 16 yrs old.
Any advice or confidence booters are welcome!

If you're the praying type, please pray that no find house for us so I can finally adopt her. :) fyi, she's so lovely, loving and awesome.

I'm not super active, but I'm looking to get in shape and go on multiple walks a day and lots of playtime. Would a collie be good?
I know this comment is a year old, but I had a thought just in case people are still reading these comments and you are still around. Many dog breeds would be thrilled to have multiple walks a day and lots of playtime, but wouldn’t be miserable if you had to be inactive every once on a while or even continued with your habit of lower activity. I’d say if you have already become super active since you left this comment then that is one thing (definitely doesn’t require a collie and might not be ideal, but you know what your activity level is) but a lower energy dog than a collie can still have plenty of energy to do anything you going to dish out to them. Also your dogs fitness level can increase with yours as long as they have no chronic health issues. It seems like a bad idea to get a collie if you aren’t already extremely active and also ready to devote hours a day to your dog having them do tasks for you. Lastly, adopting based on breed specifically isn’t necessary and could potentially limit the large pool of dogs you could meet and see if you click with, so unless you are for some specific reason dead sure that you need a collie or any other particular breed, such as for some kind of work or task, it might be even better to not limit yourself in that way and instead have a broader range of dogs you are looking at, as there are lots of amazing mutts and other breeds out there that than easily adapt to an active lifestyle yet also aren’t as demanding as a collie. In my experience and as I’ve heard from many other adopters, when you find “the dog” at a rescue or other similar situation, you will both know and just click, and it often isn’t anything to do with breed or look (though it is always important to rule out breeds you know you cannot provide quality of life for of course). The right dog might come in a shape, color, or size you least expect, just like any best friend or companion.
Am I the only one never drawn to puppies? I just want an older dog since their personality is formed and I know what I'm dealing with. 3-8 years old seems great

We adopted a Belgian Malinois back in July, for the most part a really sweet Belgian, but not thinking this through we just started Fostering another Belgian.
There is a ton of jealousy between these two super high energy pups and l want them to get along sooner rather than later. Any tips?
I need a dog where I can take it for a walk. I have health issues where I struggle with energy. I could take him for a walk every day but not a dog that needs to be run. I do not want a dog that is small. I want a medium size dog not a tiny dog. But I love kids so it also needs to be kid friendly. Do you have any breeds in mind for me?
I think a retried greyhound would be pretty good!

if you're okay with tons of grooming, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is good.
but hey, sometimes contacting your local animal shelters and telling them what you want also works! They are always happy (but heads up, sometimes slow) to help someone find a match.
Consider a senior.
My lab / border collie mix was great. I did have a backyard and a doggie door to allow her to come and go as she pleased. Her biggest problem, and probably the reason she was in the shelter, was that she was the world's most prolific shedder.
Would you say a Husky or Malamute is suitable for a first time dog owner at all or would you recommend they go for a less stubborn dog regardless of their willingness to invest time in training?
I'd say it depends on free time, the amount of work you're willing to put in, and how patient you are, plus the dogs personality. I've only ever had experience with friends and neighbors dogs (boxers,doberman, american bully, american pitbull terrier, amstaff, cane corso), but I've gotten to walk and handle said dogs at different times, and new what personality type i wanted and how to look for it. I got my first dog at the beginning of last year at a local rescue, he was 12 weeks old, and after wisdom panel health I found out I was right about my breed guesses (amstaff,boxer,bloodhound,gsd,sib husky), he is 16 months and medium energy and a bit stubborn but he was the perfect dog for me, even the neighbor who told me after we brought him home that she thought he was a bad first dog choice has since said she cant believe how well we've done with him, he's a sweet good boy with a fairly Velcro but not in your skin sort of temperament, I'm going to be looking for a female of similar temperament in a couple years time to give him a buddy.

The local shelters are overflowing with pitbulls. Slim pickin's.
I am a professional dog trainer and former rescuer. Some of the most wonderful dogs I've ever met were pit bulls/pittie mixes. When I was looking for a dog for myself, I specifically chose to look for a pit bull (or mix). They can be fabulous family companions, they're generally very food-motivated, intelligent, and eager to please, which makes them both fun and easy to train. They love with their whole hearts, they're loyal and affectionate, and endlessly amusing. I presently have 2 pit mixes (German Shorthair Pointer/pit bull who was 4 when adopted, and a deaf white Boxer/pit bull who was 6 months when adopted) - both are wonderful with my 2 small dogs, my cats, and my siblings' big dogs; both love people, especially children; both have been easy and fun to train; and both believe they're lap dogs.

My first dog was a shelter dog and he was definitely abused and won't chase balls, now that I'm looking for a new dog, the only thing I want is a dog that will chase balls and play with toys
isnt there a risk if you take your puppy to a park it could get attacked by a dog? nice to take them to the park but who knows what could happen.
