Very nice video. Your approach to making the base was interesting and informative. I just got the kit and have been digging around the scrap pile looking for ideas, I got some from you. Also tilting the handles is something I like. They should be tilted! Ok, I have just watched a bunch of TH-cam videos and oddly enough you and James Wright are the only ones that seem to know how to properly use a router plane. Nice technique! I watched Paul make this a few days ago and now seeing this , I thought the same. You can tell from the tools a lot of the time the Influencers on TH-cam. This is a great kit if you weren’t willing to spend the coin on a Veritas plane. I like these as an option. You can also tell when woodworkers watch Rob Cosman ( Chinese WR hand plane). I like watching Paul Sellers, down to earth and doesn’t push tool sales for a living.
This is a nice build video. It's well referenced to the original designer and I think you have put in some good and interesting design ideas of your own too. 👍

I don't think I will have plans for sale (as I didn't even make any for the actual building of the cabinet) but I have most of the measurements in the description of the video if I remember correctly. Thank you for putting up a video of yourself building someone else's design. If I want to build a design someone on TH-cam has posted, I always wonder if it really works, how hard was it to build really (how many retakes were there), and if it works. It gives me a little more confidence in going ahead to make that tool when I see a second person build the same thing. Not everything you did was exactly like Paul Seller's design. In making those changes you've demonstrated some of the flexibility of the design. Again, thanks for posting this.

@@dkbuildsno worry there. TH-cam is full of videos that are repeats of someone else’s projects. Interesting to see how someone else approaches the project or makes slight tweaks. TH-cam is extremely repetitious, pick a woodworker and subscribe to his channel until you see a more entertaining one. I find Paul Sellers has a huge library of instructional videos.
Nice, a Paul seller router plane, he did said it's customizable. Interesting that the metal is bevel down, most router plane have cutting edge straight and flat but cool
Yeah I think he uses a bevel down approach because he makes the blades himself out of square stock. Much easier to make this blade than an L-shaped one like most router planes use. I do think bevel-up is better though.
Yours does look exceptionally nice with the woods you chose. And, LOL, it does have a resemblance to Shrek!! Nice to see someone else make Paul's version and succeed. Great job.
I just got my kit for this plane in the mail a couple weeks ago but haven't had time to get it together yet. I like your adjustment for setting the handles at an angle. Great work!
I used the same kit!!! I made a structural change, I bored the center hole at 50° and inlet the iron to the very bottom. Then used gunsmithing bedding compound to bed the iron..Zero vibrations. Plus I've made to additional irons from O1 steel. A 1/4" and a 1/8th for inlay work......
Very nice build. Been a follower of Paul Sellers a long time. Think he would like that you took his idea and made it with modifications of your own design. Have my kit and have base done and know heading toward completion.
Just letting you know I finished my router plane today. Couldn't find knobs so made my own. Followed Paul Sellers how to shape and make Plane knobs and modified them to work on router plane.

Nice work! I like the idea for angling the handles, btw. For everyone who is waiting for the kit from Paul sellers, no need! I have already made two of these from metal sourced from scrap, with the exception of the blade. For that I bought a 12" bar from metals online or something like that. Paul has videos on how to harden and temper the steel, and I did it in a barbecue with a hair dryer 😁. All very possible and fun!

@@dkbuilds A couple of more tips -- cut the notches in the blade and also the angle to the cutting edge 'before' you harden the steel. The closer you are to the final bevel the easier your honing will be. Use hardwood such as mesquite for a hotter fire, and don't be shy about the hairdryer. Just make sure you don't get so close it starts to melt! Paul's magnet test to see when you have hit the right temperature worked perfectly. It was the first time I attempted anything like it, and it was a simple as Paul makes it look. Enjoy!
Thank you Ben! I don't believe it is stainless, I would expect it to patina over time and probably rust if water is left on it. I didn't put any finish on mine but I believe Paul Sellers puts shellac on his (I could be wrong)

Sorry for the delay William! The plane is great as a little project, and it useful if you only have a very small router plane (like me). It's great for some specific uses like shaping tenons etc but in general I wouldn't describe it as high quality or precise as for example a Stanley.

Thanks Gary! I'd say it works pretty well, but only if you are removing a tiny amount of material at a time. IMO a Stanley (or Veritas, LN, whatever) would work better than this but they're just so expensive! Plus this was a fun, cheap one-day build.

I did use a small router plane for one step of this build, but that step is totally optional (just fitting the zebrawood inlay on the front which us purely aesthetic). A router plane is in no way needed to build this.
Hell yeah that's a great solution Phi. Only downside is limited/difficulty adjusting it, but if it gets the job done there's no need to fix something that isn't broken!
Whew. That was a narrow escape there at the end. You almost cut your thumb off with the camera. It would be hard to do woodworking with only half your thumbs.
This is the sellers design, I built it and was disappointed. The problem is in the straight iron. It’s too sharp of an angle and bights into the wood to aggressively. Router planes have an “L” shaped iron for a reason. I scrapped mine and built a new one with an L iron. Much better.
Great feedback Rand and I actually agree. I don’t think router planes should have a bevel-down design like this one has. The problem is it is much more difficult to DIY an L shaped iron. Good for you for making that work! The trick to using this plane for me is to take off really tiny amounts each pass. It’s painfully slow but works well enough.
@@dkbuilds So am I. We need to get you some firmers. 8) You COULD use a mortising chisel as a firmer if you have one. They'll take that sort of beating, and more. Oh, while we're at it we should look into finding you a dozuki and a ryoba, too. Especially the dozuki. It comes with a short learning curve, but once you use one you'll never go back to English patterns again.
You don't need the tool to make the tool. For this one I put a zebra wood inlay in the front and used a small router plane to smooth that cut, but 1) that inlay is totally unnecessary, it's just for looks and 2) smoothing the bottom of that cut wasn't strictly necessary either as it's not an important glue surface.
Hey dude! You use a rabbet plane to clean up a tenon, instead of trying to use a router plane like you showed on your video. Get it straight and stop trying to teach people the wrong thing.

I notice that the kit came with a blade already cut with two locations for the adjustment wheel unless I missed it on this build.

Seem to recall a video of someone making them from Allen keys here on TH-cam. Including how to harden and temper the steel, to take a sharp edge.

You don't need the tool to make the tool. For this one I put a zebra wood inlay in the front and used a small router plane to smooth that cut, but 1) that inlay is totally unnecessary, it's just for looks and 2) smoothing the bottom of that cut wasn't strictly necessary either as it's not an important glue surface.
I think buying one is way much easier dude..

You use a rabbet plane to clean up a tenon, instead of trying to use a router plane like you showed on your video.
Get it straight and stop trying to teach people the wrong thing.
Thanks for the feedback Mark. I disagree with you. A rabbet plane would smooth that surface yes but it wouldn’t necessarily get the glue surface coplanar with the face of the work piece. Please consider being less aggressively rude in your comments. Thanks!
