    Related to the first tip, I decided my small challenge for learning Korean, getting a project done, and testing my daily habits would be "write down a word that's new to me that I used that day, everyday for the whole year." With this, I'd prove I could keep a daily habit, learn new words (a guaranteed 365 of them if everything goes well) and complete some translations in my projects. It's a small enough challenge but it will still tell me a lot about my learning and give me information! I've kept it up so far and before I knew it, I had done a month and felt great! I'm feeling good about the rest of the year too

    Japanese is the main language I'm learning, but I've gone through first couple levels of TTMIK because I think Korean's really cool. These are great tips! One thing that's really helped me with Japanese especially is that I don't save things to "study later." If I come across a Japanese post or news story that I think looks interesting, I try to read it immediately. I mean, you already think it's interesting and you're on the page, so why not just try to read it right then?

  • @anna8282

    The saving for later is so me lol. But can't really do much about it, because youtube keeps recommending interesting Korean learning videos and I simply don't have the time or stamina for hours and hours every day.... So kinda have to save them for later and watch whatever I can. But the backlog keeps growing..... 😅

    Thanks for the great content always, TTMIK. As an upper intermediate learner with ADHD, here are 2 things that have MAJORLY improved my progress over the last few months:
    1. Setting time goals each day instead of content goals. When I would set a goal like "finish one chapter" or "write ten sentences," it would discourage me and stress me out because if my schedule was too tight, I would fail my goal. I'd also be more focused on reaching the end of the content rather than actually understanding it. Instead, I'll set a timer on my phone for a predetermined amount of time each day (ex: 3 hours) and set a goal to study for that amount of time on a given day. Whenever I need a short brain break or bathroom break, I'll pause the timer. I can also split up the time throughout the day (ex: 1 hour in the morning, 2 hours in the evening). This is much better because I don't feel pressure to finish a certain amount of content and I'm better able to study with my natural pace. I constantly remind myself: "It's not about WHAT you study, but HOW LONG you study for that leads to improvement." So I'll just pick a resource, and take my time really digging into it without any pressure to finish it and move onto the next thing. It's also motivating because I know exactly how many hours I'm putting in each day.
    2. Using chatGPT as a vocabulary study aid. Before chatGPT, I would often get distracted and discouraged when an unfamiliar word or phrase came up. Now, it's incredibly simple to not only get definitions, but to get lists of sample sentences which easily clarify the meaning of each word as well as which contexts to use it in versus other similar words. While chatGPT obviously isn't perfect and sometimes gives unnatural Korean, it is absolutely a blessing in regards to keeping my study flow going in the face of new words. I'm also a huge introvert and tend to get stressed when talking to tutors, and so chatGPT allows me to ask very specific questions without the stressors that come with real human interaction.

    Great post! I haven't heard anyone talk about these before. I'm certainly guilty of watching Shorts and saving content for later!
    Another one that you didn't mention is having multiple learning resources that are all demanding your attention - that can be a distraction as well. I don't have any problem with staying motivated, I just feel guilty if I don't do at least one lesson in each of them... and there are only so many hours in a day. 😒
    I wish that I had found TTMIK first, but I'm so far down the rabbit hole of apps and other online courses that right now, all I can do is enjoy and absorb as much as I can from your excellent free content. 감사합니다! ❤

    Great video, and I switched my Instagram over to korean straight away! I think it's an easy app to navigate without much difficulty so hopefully not frustrating for me, plus it's easy to switch back to English if needed because it's easy to find the option.
    I'll like to add 2 ideas I use on a regular basis to improve my Korean.
    1. I write shopping lists for groceries in Korean, I'll put the English next to the word until I learn the Korean well enough. It works quickly for regular groceries.
    2. For car journeys I do regularly and know well, I'll sometimes turn on my Google maps or alternative and change the voice to Korean. I know enough words now to navigate well enough. It's good revision.

    Probably the thing that slowed my Korean learning was joing TTMIK and doing the levels. I'd NOT pay TTMIK and I would simply focus on learning words after basic grammer on how to use them. Do not waste time doing the TTMIK Levels until you start speaking korean and know hundreds of words. Its frustrating, growth stunting and will likely lead you to quit. Trust me.

    • @DSS712
      @DSS712 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I get your frustration, but I wouldn't say it's fair to blame the TTMIK leveled content on this. Studying vocab with a flashcard app WHILE also studying the TTMIK books was how I got my start in Korean, and it was very effective. I agree that a vocab base is necessary to make use of grammar study, but at the same time, drilling a bunch of vocab without context to use it in is detrimental to vocab memorization. Doing both at the same time is the best way

    • @Fab40s
      @Fab40s 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      I can see what you are trying to say, I had tried learning only using TTMIK levels say about an year ago and after 5 months reached level 7 , thought i understood everything upto that level then got stuck there. I couldn't utter a word in language exchange meetings , so i took a break from just level grammar lessons, and added reading, writing videos in TTMIK to aid in my learning journey, immersed myself in so many TH-cam videos and podcasts. Past 5 months I've turned a corner in my Korean learning journey, although I still cant speak fluently , but that's just my confidence level and not necessarily due to lack of vocab or Korean skillset.
      Immerse yourself and be consistent. I have subscribed to their new website as well and the community is just awesome. Based on my experience, one shouldn't limit themselves to just grammar levels, instead make use of all TTMIK resources as well as so many other resources available on TH-cam , reading books, journaling in Korean truly aids in language learning journey.
