- In the spirit of Black History Month, I wanted to talk about one of my favorite movie characters and villains of all time, Alonzo Harris, from Training Day. The character is pretty popular, even leading to an Oscar for actor Denzel Washington, but why? What makes his character so good? Lets take a look as we explore Why Alonzo Harris is One of the Greatest Villains.

I love this film man Denzel truly showed the world he could make him self the villian.
Man he really did. I never doubted him, but he took this to a different level.
Ya'll need to remember that throughout the entire movie, Alonzo does everything with the threat of impending violent death looming over him. His behavior knowing that his own death is coming is very understandable. He feels powerless knowing his death is coming, so he feels the need to lash out and impose what power he can. Who wouldn't act like Alonzo knowing that you were going to die that night? In fact his composure under the threat of death is remarkable!
I agree his actions are understandable. Are they right or moral? Absolutely not. Also, to play devils advocate, I don't think he keeps his composure well at all. He is pretty reckless and questionable throughout the entire film. But to your point, he does have a reason to be. He's lucky Jake was extraordinarily naïve. Alonzo would've been turned in by me 15 minutes into the film lol.
@@itakeonmovies I meant that he kept his composure well given the knowledge of what might happen to him at midnight. It's very difficult to keep your composure knowing you might not survive to see the next morning.
I see what you mean and you're right. Most people would've just went into hiding or tried to escape town or something.
I still don't see what he did that was so wrong. He took dope money and was gonna use it to stay alive. The mob dudes are the real villains. They're a fuckin mob and killed a cop over a fist fight.

As malevolent as Alonzo was, he spoke truth with how this world "actually" works... One of /if not my favorite villain in cinema history. Denzel CRUSHED this, and so did Ethan Hawke. YOU also killed your character breakdown, broski🤘
Yeah I think the fact he was dropping Gems made him that much more compelling of a villain. He was right a lot of the time. Such a good movie. And thank you bro I appreciate ya! 🙏🏾

He only talked like that because he had a price on his head. That’s it. That’s manipulation at its finest.
There was no deeper meaning, he did all that just to escape getting killed by the Russians
You know the point of the character is that he doesn't actually believe that right? Like he'll contradict himself to keep Jake cool with him. He is just a gangster with a badge. He knows it and everyone around him knows it.

Love Denzel as Alanzo and his 1979 Black Chevy Monte carlo were both stole the show for me in training day
I couldn't agree more he was obviously a force in the film and car was like it's own character lol. ✊🏾
This is great video. I went into this film completely blind and was fully expecting a buddy cop movie like Lethal Weapon. Alonzo is so charismatic, so convincing and intimidating that my brain almost refused to believe he was a villain. I kept telling myself that he was showing Jake how the streets actually were and it would all lead to some payoff in the end. The way that slowly but surely we the audience along with Jake see more and more of who Alonzo really is, was just brilliant. He manipulates us just as well as Jake. This film has stuck with me ever since. Denzel definitely deserved that Oscar.
You got it all the way right my friend. I think that's not just a testament to how good the movie is, but how great and believable Denzel was. Had us all saying, "wait, he does have a point" 'Wait..." "oh.." lol
@@itakeonmovies Absolutely. He keeps you guessing about him until the very end. Another movie that sort of does something similar, though not as well IMO is 10 Cloverfield Lane with John Goodman. I know people hated the ending but I loved it.

I never wanted a villain to win more than Alonzo.
Interesting take. I wouldn't have minded that, but he also started getting on my nerves towards the end. I was ready for somebody to take his ass out Lol.

Frank TenPenny is based on Alonzo Harris who in turn is based on Rafael Perez. Ralph PendelBury and Diego Hernandez are based on Jake Hoyt. I don't know much about what Rafael Perez believed but I can say Alonzo Harris and Frank TenPenny were both right in their beliefs but wrong in their methods and I think they both were undercover too long, saw some big "money" change hands, and decided it was time to take a piece for themselves. Training Day and GTA: SA are both based on something that really happened in Los Angeles.
I could agree with this. They were definitely victims of a corrupt environment and situation. Instead of attempting to stop it, they became a part of the problem. As for Alonzos policing tactics, I'd say you're exactly right. Seems like someone who's seen it all and is just tired of the bs. But I think if you're in a field and you get to that point, it might be time to quite lol.
Jake seems to know where to draw the line.
Denzel is absolutely chilling in this role, just a force of malevolent nature. But, in the end, all too human and as mortal as the rest of us.
Chilling is exactly the word I'd use too and you're correct. A man whose best qualities are also what got him killed. 🙏🏾
Used to have a supervisor in the military that reminded me of Alonzo, but he never tried to kill me.

I honestly used to think Denzel Washington was overrated until I saw him as Alonzo. The fact that a guy who usually played characters who were overachievers saving the world played such a despicable villain really showed his talent and range. This movie actually made my respect for Denzel go way up.
It's been a LOOOOOOONG time since I rewatched Training Day but I better do so soon. Fantastic review once again. Denzel is a godsend to cinema!

One of the best Denzel Washington films. My other favourite of his is Glory. Washington played Alonzo Harris perfectly. He was scary because he sounded so logical, so persuasive. The disillusionment of Ethan Hawke's was so complete but from this he learnt and became a better policeman. Another excellent film in which Denzel Washington shone was American Gangster.
I agree 100%. What makes Alonzo so great is his ability to not only sound rational to Ethan Hawke, but also to us. I remember the first time watching this I was conflicted about his actions, but still hesitant to call Alonzo a bad guy. That's a testament to how good of an actor Denzel is. He transforms in almost every movie he's in and Glory and American Gangster are two of his best! ✊🏾

I like to think Alonso started like Jake wanting to be a good cop. But after time he got jaded and became corrupt because he thought this was thr only way he could get justice.
I agree! I definitely think he became jaded, but I also think he probably had some narcissistic and selfish tendencies naturally causing him to become corrupt fairly easily.
Wow, great take on a complex character. I agree that Training Day does have a compelling story arc but is, at its core a character study.

I still don't understand how he's a villain...
Alonzo is living in the real world... He's an Anti-hero but def not a villain. Jake is more like him as well, taking the money to make sure he dies
I like your perspective. I think part of the reason why Alonzo is so effective as a villain is because he makes some great points throughout the film. He's great with words. I think he's undeniably a villain though. He murdered and put many innocent peoples live in danger, one of which being his own son, for selfish and irresponsible reasons.
But like they say, some of the best villains are those that make compelling arguments and he definitely does that.
I wana be devil's advocate and actually support Alonzo's actions and plans.
This guy had like less than 20 hours to live. He is a man with literally a gun to his head and he desperately wants to stay alive. He did what he had to do. He had no choice. Alonzo comes off good guy who had to learn the rules of life in a tough way. I remember a scene with Roger where he sort of patronized him for being like Jake at the beginning. Those facets are still entrenched in him if you observe carefully. He is good at his job and in fact the best with the highest conviction and incarceration rate in lapd. Give Alonzo some credit. He wasnt a villain but a hero on a clock.
I like this perspective. I think if you're looking at it purely from Alonzo's point of view, sure there is meaning behind his actions. He's not just doing this for fun, like you said the minutes to his life count.
With that being said I disagree with the idea that he's not evil and certainly the idea that he's a hero. Alonzo is a man who exploited neighborhoods, even before his debts I'm sure, as you can see by the disdain people had towards him. He's an officer of the law and was in business with the Russian mob, I'm pretty sure that alone breaks multiple code of conduct policies within the LAPD. And because of this, he dug himself into debt with these shady characters and is now taking it out on otherwise innocent people, especially Jake. He was literally ready to kill another officer for his own selfish reasons and ultimately didn't care who got caught in the crossfire, including his own son.
With that being said I understand why he was doing this. That's what makes him a great villain, he actually had motivations. This doesn't mean his motivations and plans aren't evil though. The only thing closely resembling a hero in this movie is Jake, for trying to get evil off the street, without breaking 1000 other laws in the process lol.

BRILLIANT ANALYSIS!!!!!!!!!! Alonzo was literally living with a gun to his own head (hence he acts out and puts a gun on Hoyt's head)
@@itakeonmovies The people who disdain Alonzo are all crooks themselves, so Alonzo feels perfectly justified exploiting other sharks. He wasn't in business with the Russian mob, he killed a Russian mobster (probably playing Blackjack, since it was in Las Vegas, and was probably insulted by the mobster) so the mob came after him. He dug himself into debt because the Mob put a tax on him for killing one of their members. The only reason he decided to have Hoyt killed was because Hoyt didn't take the money and would have potentially snitched on him, destroying his long illustrious career. So it wasn't as much evil as brutal self-preservation.

I finally watched this movie for the first time (crazy right) and I must admit that while this movie was tense as hell, it was also fun. Alonzo Harris definitely is an iconic character in cinematic history. I am also convinced that both the director and those who contributed to this movie allowed Denzel to do whatever; convinced he had a script but some of those lines were ad libbed or improv. Such a talent.
This movie really is a master class on how to manipulative, sneering, and gaslighting others to get you want. Alonzo saw Jake, a naive and charismatic cop and always wanted to prey on his naïveté because Jake was new. Alonzo had the upper hand and used his power and status as this “corrupt cop” to make people turn their backs on Jake. Believe it or not, this is how i feel some cops move in reality. Cops are narcissists that know they can win the public over because of their occupation. The way Alonzo was able to switch from this good cop bad cop persona was remarkable. He thrives off impressionable people like Jake because people like Jake can’t resist. At the end though, Alonzo’s mask came out, exposing he is a sick and vile person after all.

So why cant black guys play villians? Denzel was phenomenal in this film, who cares if hes black, that had nothing to do with his character. Hes a corrupt cop, adding the word black means little to nothing. Everyone in this film was great to be honest, oscars all around!
I think the reason one might mention he's black kind of leads me to answer your first question. Black guys should definitely be able to play villains. The issue is we rarely see it in this fashion. It's hard to name a black villain that essentially leads a film like Denzels Alonzo. While you're right, his blackness had nothing to do with the character, I think it has everything to do with movies and Hollywood in general.

Training Day is one of my favorite movies: only issue i had is that when Jake confronted Alonzo,he did not tell him that he did not like bein setup for murder by triple team of thugs,like he told him that" thats t second time u pulled a gun on me,will not be a third.",must be part of writers.

I truly believe he should have made it at the end. If that movie would have had him training another cop at the end totally different movie. He would have been like Keyser Soze or Hannibal Lecter. Mat Damon should have been the new trainee.
A movie in which Jake died and somehow Alonzo survived and continued his reign of evil would have been a crazy story, or sequel. I'm hearing they're making a prequel. So Mayne that could explore Alonzo more. 👀

Alonzo is a humanised villain who has a point. An anti-villain to be precise.

I love this movie, but something occurred to me. Why did Alonzo even need Jake? If he had just taken any one of his loyal troops to jack the Sandman and then gone on to jack Roger with the others, then everything would have worked out for Alonzo. Afterwards he could have given Jake the slow boil and he would had a much better chance of corrupting him. Maybe we can chalk it up to arrogance, hubris or love of the game, but it seems like it was a completely unnecessary risk to bring a fresh rookie in on the plan.

Lol I would love to argue, but these are all questions I've had to. The way I see it is, I think Jake asked to shadow Alonzo as he was "top dog" in that division. So I don't think Alonzo had much of a choice. So if anything Jake was a minor conveniences to him and like you said he let his hubris get the best of him by thinking he could just get rid of him.
@@itakeonmovies Actually, Alonzo knew Jake's bio was flawless in the police department and wanted Jake in on the Sandman's robbery/murder because it would look more on the up and up. Remember, Alonzo wanted Jake to fire the shot. Alonzo and his regular goons probably have been accused of misconduct in the past which I'm sure they beat but 1 of them firing the shot may have looked suspicious due to past accusations. It was all a calculated sinister plan by Alonzo.
@@itakeonmovies The smart thing for Alonzo to do would have been to make Jake wait outside and secure a perimeter, Jake would have been none the wiser that they were actually committing a crime. The only problem with that solution was that he would have heard shots fired and might have called for backup too soon and ruined Alonzo's plan, but Alonzo could have simply told him not to call for backup if he heard gunshots, but that would be a very suspicious request for which Alonzo could get in trouble for.

What I really like about Alonzo is that one can infer that he sincerely believes he's ultimately the good guy in the situation. It would have been easy to write a corrupt cop as just some pompous ass who couldn't care less about the badge he owns, but other characters' word of mouth and the way Alonzo seemed genuinely impressed by Hoyt's instinctive move to save a potential rape victim indicates he was once clean and out to do what's right.
Along the way, he made moral compromises, and he likely had to rationalize why he took a little extra money, or maybe framed one or two innocent people. That honest cop slowly died, but he got so good at lying that he ended up lying to himself about how he's a wolf, yes, but a wolf with the community's best interests at heart.
It's also why he's so insistent on selling others out to save his own skin. He's the good guy, right? He has to live so that the real scum get what's coming to them. Sacrifices have to be made, but that's the way the world works... at least, that's what Alonzo believes.
It's because of how far he's fallen that Alonzo is so compelling. Wonderful video highlighting this excellent villain!

Alonzo was a malignant narcissist. He loved bombed, devalued and discarded jake ! Well attempted to discard. Yes he was a master manipulator. He shoots roger and another guy, tries to line up a story on the spot, and tell everybody to get on board.
I bought my Monte Carlo because of this movie….

He doesn't have 4 kids with a wife he has 4 kids.
