  • Has the Alto K10 become the best first car for Indian families? The K10 has played second fiddle to the Alto 800 right from the start. But, the third generation Alto K10 has changed tack to be more than just an Alto with more power. It’s trying to be friendlier for everyone in the family. So, is it? And, is it worth it?

Coming from the hills, the Alto is a hot seller here. People from all walks of life own one. After the Omni was discontinued, this has become the de facto car for cab drivers in my town. My family has had 3 Altos to date. The OG Alto has been to places unimaginable, the old K10 was a highway car for my sister and my cousin has done many trips and back from Darjeeling. This car easily keeps up with the diesel engines when it is time to climb a steep slope. The Japanese know how to make punchy engines!

Just Bought one yesterday for 5.50 VXI+ lakhs only. It's a magnificent machine. It's safer, cheaper and bigger than any previous Alto. Moreover, for a minimalist person like me. It has everything I needed from my first car. I know that, I'll buy more cars in future but never gonna sell this.

The tall boy stance surely inspires confidence in new riders but while driving my grandpa's alto 2010 I felt it better around corners, it had a more of your own small little project car type feel to it. With it getting bigger surely is better to make it family friendly which is good in a way. Not hating on the new alto I think it's just me getting all nostalgic about driving the old sweet little alto. That's why i think the ignis now is very close to that alto in that stance and even better in handling it's like a car with lot of potential and provides that my own small little project car feel. Damn I miss that Sony aftermarket sound system in my grandpa's alto and my father's i10 2008.

(Both of the drivers of the family are out of town.) with the wider tires and lower build it handles soooooooo much better than the current alto . It’s cheap , fun and always there in case you need it

Talking about the car, it's only fit for Uber/Ola rides. Suzuki makes one of the most cheap looking cars in our country both externally & internally. For the price, I'd rather happily go with the Tata Tiago EV as a second car.

I love the 80’s uncle styling. I don’t know if you were trying for that look but as someone from that era I can swear you would fit right in. I honeymooned in a Maruti 800. Travelled all over Sikkim, Bhutan and Darjeeling to the sound of Roza. 800 was a goat. It would just climb any hill. Cross any stream. I have moved on from Maruti 800, Alto and K10 to something substantial but I have very fond memories of the 800 and I am sure this successor is as good…even better. It’s a cute, simple dependable car. Really enjoyed the review. Thanks.

After watching this video, I dearly miss the CHEVROLET SPARK. It is a car that came at a similar price point but was more value in terms of engine, cabin quality, fit and finish, space, sound insulation and dynamics. You got a lot more flash for a bit more cash in the Spark. I wonder, how the spark would look as an entry level car in the Indian market right now, assuming it to be updated with time. Do let me know your thoughts guys!

    • @MrStealthy007
      @MrStealthy007 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

You forget to account for inflation. The spark was discontinued in 2017. Inflation adjusted, the spark would cost a whopping 7 lakhs for the base model, that's more than the Baleno, which is 3 segments up. Also, the engine in the Alto is better in every way, more power, more low end grunt. I agree about the better fit and finish, but the alto also has far more space than the spark. Longer wheelbase, larger dimensions in every way. No matter how bad the Alto is in terms of safety, the spark is definitely worse, because it's based on a 1998 Daewoo Matiz platform, which just received tiny updates over the years. It got only 3 stars in the year 2000, in today's NCAP regime, it would receive 0. The Spark was a much worse car in every way, because it wasn't European or American like most people think, it was a cheap Korean car, far worse than the Alto. I say this as someone who has owned a Daewoo Matiz.

I just had to replace my 2012 Maruti 800 because it got me stranded during heavy rainfall under a cliff, a landslide could have easily taken me out, they're too frequent in Himachal. It was a great car, it went where the Fortuners dare not go and carried my family through snowstorms and muddy and broken roads. It was basic and agricultural, quite literally as it carried light machines and sometimes workers.
I was going to get the K10 base variant but Maruti dealers were offering me 90k for my old Maruti 800. The TATA dealer was right next to it and I just went to check what price would they offer in exchange for my old car, they said 1.3lac. I hadn't planned on getting a TATA but the difference of INR40k was quite significant. So significant that base variant Alto K10 and base variant TATA Tiago were effectively the same price for me. It wasn't a difficult decision for me as I wanted to try something different and new, Maruti cars felt too familiar and the orange lights on the instrument cluster were a big turn off. I did the paperwork right there and got my Tiago the next day. It's quite agricultural as well, the low end torque is better than the K10 and it makes climbing steep mountain roads really really easy. It's wider, that is bothersome in narrow roads where you can barely fit 2 cars side by side and it is quite stressful when you are just centimeters away from a 100-200 foot deep cliff. The corner stability control is a plus as mountains roads are full of curves but I can't tell if it's working. Both car's feel worse than the Maruti 800. It was very communicative. The steering wheel, the brake pedal and the clutch would talk to me. Even a small stone could be felt through the steering of the M800.
These new cars, the K10 and Tiago felt like nothing. I compare all cars with my Honda City because it has the best balance of ease, comfort and road communication. Maruti 800 was too light so having no power steering worked in its favour. The Tiago feels dead to me. The brake pedal isn't hard. It's too easy to push it to 100% without realizing it and even with ABS it's too dangerous for muddy and icy roads. Honda City feels soft initially but you have to put in some effort to push it to 100%.
Same is the case with the accelerator. When you push it all the way down, it seems like it takes ~2 seconds to think if it should accelerate. In M800 and Honda City it is instantaneous.
I didn't get to test the K10 properly because the sales rep was sitting right next to me. And initially during the test drive the Tiago felt smoother because of its delayed throttle response and better sound insulation. Tiago can be agricultural and is capable, just like my M800 was but it is not a driver's car. It just feels too numb and I don't know if K10 would have felt better as a driver.
But I don't know if I made the right choice. Fuel consumption wise, I didn't. Safety wise, I did. Can't say about the rest, except for the uneven panel gaps in Tata vehicles. Maruti does a really good job with their measurements and tolerances.
Requesting a Tiago and K10 comparison. They aren't that different from each other.

Sir I am a Suzuki owner and I am staunchly against Suzuki cars for the following reasons :
    1. Poor crash safety.
    2. Failure to recall cars despite known issues like steering coloumn failure in multiple models.
    3. Servicing costs are similar/ higher compared to other brands when done from authorised service centers.
It’s better to spend money on a safer car and on brands which won’t hide defects.

After moving to a Tiago NRG from an Alto 800, I don't think I can imagine ever getting back to an Alto, even as a secondary car. My alto has been used in cities, across cities on highways, and even in unpaved villages. It was a good Car, but for 5.11, not very good, and I'd get knee pains from the constant lever shifts. Rides with more than 2/3 average sized adults mostly became not too pleasant, with the engine grunting, the AC huffing, & the passengers puffing. And that damn seat height!! Highway rides were nervy beyond speeds of 85-90 (though it *DID* do speeds of even *120kms* 4 abreast😂). But it did have one thaing my Tiago does not have: SMOOTH engine. The Tiago is a VERY pleasant ride on highways, but inside the city, I miss my Alto's refinement. But probably wouldn't go back to it.
Oh, I also forgot its _lack of_ heft/weight, which has its own set of problems, other than safety.

Any reason why the S-Presso skipped a mention? I sat in an Uber recently and the ride was as plush in the city as my Corolla. And given the ground clearance of that thing, i would love to do some seriece off-road. Pair it with an AMT, its a serious errand boy in the city. Office commutes. I would live to hear a comparison between these 2 especially on the highways. As both of these fall almost in the same price

It has been always a pleasure to drive Alto. It gives an extra kick while going Uphill, where Bigger cars get tired to go. I agree, this car has variants crossing over different price segments.
For an average Non-Car Guy who is a first time buyer, an Alto & the Suzuki badge will strike a chord of reliability & familiarity.
An Uncle of mine was zeroing in on the Alto Vxi+ and I convinced him to get an Ignis Sigma, which is a far better car.

I think because of the high tax in India, manufactures are unable to lower the price of cars below a certain level.
So, when they come up with a low priced car, there will be visible cost cutting everywhere. That is what happened with Alto and that is why the wow factor is missing.
But still this price is higher for someone who is currently using a motorbike and dreaming to buy the first car.
This Alto and the Brezza has the same 18% GST included on their ex-showroom price. The government should consider a sub category for entry level cars, where is GST is lower.(10% or lower) So that a 'two wheeler' family can upgrade to a car family. Otherwise the entry level cars will be expensive like this, and as you said in the video, people will consider a mid-varient Calerio or base-varient swift over this car.
The presentation is unique. Keep it up.

I asked the service centre rep during the first service, he said "sir I've tried 2 other altos and they have the same steering experience" which meant that it might be the way altos steering is - cost cutting I'm assuming.

I have driven the 1st gen Alto k10, it's engine felt way more free revving and much responsive and was easy to drive. But there are things didn't liked. First it's not free from vibration as it can be felt through dashboard and doors but gets smoother as I start moving. Second it feels very low when sitting in and as I'm 5"6" I was not feeling comfortable anymore, the dimensions especially width was feeling too narrow. And Third is it's build quality, not the best and feels super flimsy. This new Alto k10 review I saw is having these issues you addressed, and a bit of rattling sound can be heard which I also heard on the old alto k10, and in this the safety rating is 2 stars only, which doesn't feel great. I agree that Kwid is way better in looks, space, and lots of safety features it gets.
