    The scene when Gyllenhaal is in the basement is one of the creepiest scenes in recent cinema. Oh, and "I'm not the Zodiac. And if I was, I certainly wouldn't tell you."

    The original case is already an incredible history and an important part of American culture, Fincher and the producers made a good job translating those events and people into a cohesive film. No doubt directorial and artistic choices made it a compelling cinematic experience but are also the cast of incredible actors with likable and believable performances that makes the film work.

    I remember getting to the end of the film on my first viewing and feeling so incredibly frustrated and disappointed that the case wasn't solved. But I realize that was exactly what I was supposed to feel. The film wants the viewer to feel the frustration of not having closure, of not solving the mystery in a satisfying way. If you feel that way at the end, then you know what everyone who has ever struggled with this case feels.

    Thank you for the review of Zodiac, guys! This film is one of my favorites, and my opinion of the real-life story of the Zodiac Killer case is that it was Arthur Leigh Allen all along. I realize there is some evidence to suggest it was not Allen, but I still happen to agree with Robert Graysmith's opinion.

    I once spoke to a forensic psychologist about the Zodiac case and she agreed with me that someone who would send such letters to taunt the authorities would at least leave a letter of confession in their will. His ego would not be able to accept anonymity following death, he would want posthumous credit and recognition. So he'd still be alive or, like Arthur Leigh Allen, would have died unexpectedly at a relatively young age before leaving his confession.

    Haha - now that I've been & gone & rewatched the superb Fincher 'Zodiac' flick, I can settle in & watch my always enjoyable "Online Movie Buddies" have a DAMN fine conversation about it! So THANK YOU for reminding me of a DAMN fine film, fellahs! 🥰
    Y'know, whilst rewatching 'Zodiac', it struck me that the Zodiac Killer is the closest thing we have to a latterday Jack the Ripper. Not as to the modus operandi, but certainly with the tantalising clues (the Ripper's graffiti on the wall, his deliberately meaningful arranging of body parts), the letters taunting the police, & the absolute terror his short but vicious reign caused in the general populace.
    And of course, the fact that Jack & the Zodiac were never caught has guaranteed their place in serial killer history, WELL above & beyond all those other pathetic saddos, & limpdick psychopaths we all love & loathe!
    Y'know, I had completely forgotten that the film (like the book) pretty conclusively fingered one particular suspect, which actually ALSO parallels Jack the Ripper, as persuasively outlined in THEE very best book ever written about the Ripper, bar NONE - namely Bruce Robinson's 'They All Love Jack' (published in 2015). Not only does this book have the definitive, final word on the identity of the Ripper, but it also rather nicely nails the self-serving 'Ripperologist' industry, as well as the many hypocracies & failings of the pretty vile Victorian Era, to boot!
    At the risk of harping on about it (oops, too late!), I defy anyone to NOT be convinced as to the Ripper's identity after reading Robinson's hugely entertaining book. Dare I say, it's a RIPPING good read (I dared! I dared! LoL), with plenty of invective & righteous anger, as one might expect from the writer & director of the stone cold classic comedy, 'Withnail & I'.
    Phew! So go on, Gary & Iain & all my luvly "Shelf-Offerers" - watcha waitin' for??? Go read 'They All Love Jack'! You will NOT be disappointed*!
    (& no, I DON'T receive any commission on book sales, but maybe I SHOULD...Hmmm...) 🤔 😇😄
    (*& if, by some freakish random act of chance you ARE disappointed, well, you only have yourself to blame. Grin!)

    • @MothraBlues
      @MothraBlues 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@supoa9489 Nope! He was an entertainer - a singer who had also penned one of the most popular songs of the time.
      But like I say - 'They All Love Jack' is the final word on it, imho. Trust me, Robinson's research was exhaustive - and the more he researched, the more he was astounded at how much evidence about the Ripper's actual identity wasn't that hard to discover, which naturally enough led to the obvious question "So why the so-called 'mystery'?"
      Well, those answers are in the book as well! LoL

    I think Fincher makes it pretty clear what he thinks about rogue cops by having the Dirty Harry scene included. It was a shot at taking the law into your own hands and maybe a shot at Clint Eastwood? Why do you think they walked back the right wing politics in the sequel Magnum Force? I do completely believe Eastwood used the killings to his advantage with Dirty Harry; that is kind of............yuck IMO. Real people got brutally murdered and using it to make a movie with questionable ethics was not the best idea IMO; no matter how good the movie, it was still a bad idea.
    And while this is a very good film, it seems like this was the template for the excellent Mindhunter on Netflix which was a Fincher produced show. Great movie, but that show is even better than this movie. Both are certainly worth a watch if you haven't seen either.
