  • Today we build and test DML Speakers in and for the KGKG Garage. How easy are they to build? How good do they sound? We will find out today!

I highly suggest using a sub woofer with the DML's. I prefer the Dayton Audio DAEX25x4-4 quad/ spider cage exciters, had good luck with them. I also suggest spacing the speakers farther apart and play with proximity to the back wall. For anyone building these I just use coarse thread screws directly screwed into the foam to hang the speakers - no adhesive involved and no issues even with the heavier quad exciters. Cheers

You might think only "successful" builds are worth posting, but this is useful as you did what all DML starters will do, the foam panels, and will get not great results. Its always the bass missing. I read you should frame your panels, like with a rectangle of wood around the back, to get bass. The whole audio scene is new to me "crossovers, impedance and ohms, oh my!" lol. I will try a few things but liked for your effort.

Hi, nice work. Try using a amp or some filter to feed a sub woofer low frequency and mids n low to flat speaker. When flat don't get low frequency fed they sound better in view

Hey friend, Kirk here. The Crackling you hear, are most likely Distortion, because you have them so close together, there sound waves are hitting each other and trying to cancel each other !

sorry thats just wrong on so many levels. waves that 'hit' each other dont distort they simply add up. distortion is either 1. from amp (unlikely) 2. from speakerdriver/exciter (very likely) 3. from panel or combination of driver - panel relationship. distortion increases the harder you drive a speaker

@@knowgearsknowglory2862 don't take seriously this kind of nonsense comments, for someone like me looking for content about these speakers is really good to see different build results before I try myself. Thanks!

one exciter needs to be in the center, the other off to one side and down a bit in the setup you have.
the panel should be 90% the width as the length.
a subwoofer in needed separately with foam panels.
an acoustic ceiling tile would add some midrange and take out some higher pitch.
a stiff cardboard panel believe it or not sounds really good !!
frame the left and right side of the cardboard with wood 1x1's by cutting a slot in them to glue the cardboard in, then run two 1x1's across the back attached to the 2- 1x1's on the sides for support, leave the top and bottom as is.
you can lightly spray the cardboard and wood with some polyurethane to give them durability.
this is what i have learned from studying the topic and i am getting ready to make some myself. its not hard to get GREAT sound out of these, just a few basic rules need to be learned from others.
the best ones i have heard yet are cardboard with 2 exciters and an added ribbon tweeter at the top center. they had the exciters placed one in center and one down and to the right a few inches on both.
