hi mate thanks for the vid i know you put a lot of time in it ive been diving and fishing all my life but could never be bothered filming it so nice job
Bro you just made my month with this upload, prob gonna binge watch it 10 times in a row, that self iki king was crazy. plus the way you put your vids together is the best
It trips me out how similar NZ and Southwestern Aus is to Southern California and Baja in seascape and ecology. Almost like deja vu watching your videos. Good stuff bro!
Interesting and such great technique stunning video makes me wanna go try my own hand at it and do it this way. The vibes, wakes my instinct I wanna go, setup a playlist with Metallica and Delta Parole and go off into my own world soon.
The kingfish probably came out so well smoked was because it had a high oil content. Smoking it was most likely the best choice. Great filming, thanks to everyone for sharing the experience.
lasker31 cheers mate, yep i smoke a lot of kingies but haven’t had that nice stringy connective tissue before. I think the age of the fish helped. You’re right about smoking I only generally sashimi and smoke them.
Hi Luke, many thanks for the video, appreciate the work you put into it. I was wondering if having a solid plastic float, attached to the gun would help landing that kingi? I'm a petite lady-diver. I always drag a solid buoy with a flag attached to my gun. Thank you!
Hey I can answer questions a bit more in depth on luke_likes_ledges on Instagram. I’m a bit confused as to what you mean. Kingfish often don’t get to flight to the float because the bottom or reef is often closer than the length of the line etc.

The absolute don of editing 👑 that’s some time and effort . blessings brother what an awesome trip. Wicked to see it from 3 perspectives. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Sam your a character 🤣
First time watching your vids...From San Diego California and we go for "yellowtail" here which are exactly the same as your "kingfish" except your kingfish get 4 times as big! It's very impressive to see them reach that size, the one you stuck in the head was smaller? Incredible.
Dog Dude Drone nice mate we do add yellowtail to the front of the name kingfish here. Yeah up at the 3 kings they are very big, common costal fish here are usually 10-15kg. Do you guys have the big abalone?
Hey Luke ,that was a great trip to the Kings. I was surprised at the absence of sharks.Any reason for that ? You were shooting some big kingis there. I never made it to the Kings ....but there's nothing wrong with Gt Barrier or Bay of Islands diving ,I reckon. Oh to be 30 yrs old once again !
stoneman006 most run shafts around 7mm, I shot the big fish with 7.5mm double flopper and the reel gun had a thin 6.5mm shaft on it. I prefer more small accurate manoeuvrable guns.
Hey guys. Really nice film. I learned to spear fish in the Caribbean year’s ago and its really cool to watch you doing it in such an truly epic location. Cant wait for more of the same. Peace and one love 🤙🏼
Primo bro 🤙 Another epic vlog and looked like a sick trip. Cool to now see it from all 3 perspectives!! Hit the kings last year on a charter, was a special place alright! Didn't do enough diving though for my liking so wanting to get up there again sometime now that I've got myself another boat. Cheers Luke!
@@AquaticRehabSpearfishing I'll hold you to that mate! Was actually messaging you year before last and was going to get you out with us while we were over coro way but weather turned to shit! I'll flick you a message 👍
Hey!! Just wondering, why don't you guys use slip tips instead of the normal flopper? Seems like the slip tip is a way better way to go. Thanks for the vid! cheers
Ben Schlesier slip tips are good for landing big fish but not great for accuracy and also just add a layer of complexity being mechanical. Mostly in this video I am hunting reef fish and same with my local hunting spots and slip tips are no good for that compared to floppers because often I pass through snapper and hit rocks etc. They are not commonly used here but defiantly would be welcome if purely targeting big kings which I never really do.
The meat I took home was the abalone (paua), both fillets off the kingfish and a couple of small reef fish. I did the paua over 2 weeks and smoked the entire kingfish and vac packed it. This is subsistence spearing and with a family of four it actually didn't go as far as I thought it would.
Stay safe mate, Loved the video. Kingies fight sooo dirty, they have turned me into a tea bag so many times, your need good spears with fish that size. Loved the video, you are helping a lot of self isolating peeps hey with content like yours! Stay safe!
dstick1 yeah ironic drop a fish on the 7.5mm double flopper and land one on the 6.5mm single flopper haha- obviously placement made all the difference. Cheers

hi mate thanks for the vid i know you put a lot of time in it ive been diving and fishing all my life but could never be bothered filming it so nice job
Cheers mate yeah I do find it difficult these days and the editing is a huge job hence why I am trying to get help through patreon.
Thanks for replying I spearfish as well but in Australia so one day when I’m older I would love to go to the three kings and shoot a nice snapper
@@AquaticRehabSpearfishing all good mate im shore we can help you out

Cold water up there so don’t think the bronzies are into it as much as where I usually spear. Saw a 7 giller.
Mean video man. Feeling the burn for you on the big donkey pulling off. Epic trip.
PM Outdoors and Reviews haha yep in my top 5 traumatic fish losses
You ever bump into Great Whites off the north coast there?
Boondock Patrol not personally but so see the odd bit of boat footage sightings.
Fkn awesome video mate enjoyed it heaps
Man, looks so much like Catalina California! Y'all prefer thin whippy spear shaft of heavy for kingys?
stoneman006 most run shafts around 7mm, I shot the big fish with 7.5mm double flopper and the reel gun had a thin 6.5mm shaft on it. I prefer more small accurate manoeuvrable guns.
Awesome video again mate! How big do you reckon the first kingy you shot was?
I dunno man IMHO in the 40s somewhere... It genuinely looked a lot bigger than the one I landed and the large fish that were hanging around on day 2.
AMAZING man!!! great filming, but better kingy :)
