India will not move into anybody's orbit. What India is trying to do is to establish an multi-polar world order - where everyone needs everyone.
This inter-dependence and economic co-operation based on sustainable future is far more safe and reliable bet for India - rather than joining camps against fighting communism with capitalism or viz-a-viz.
India is already vouching to create the third front with the Global South (Africa & South America) and thus wants to setup it's own camp - where US needs India, UK needs India, Arabs needs India, Japan, S.Korea & Australia needs India, Russia, Iran, Israel and China as well needs India to latch their ailing economy in the second half of the 21st century. Sooner than later - EU will have to fall in line as well - on other hand not sure when Canada will realize but they will sure soon.
So yea - that's the point. World needs India in coming foreseeable future of 21st century and India doesn't wants to thwart that demand by joining into or getting dragged into camps and wars resultants from the 20th Century era great wars and cold wars

You ask about other reasons why Indo-Russian ties are strong? Let me present to you some historical events, then you might understand how we thought of the West immediately after 1947.
First of all, let me tell you what I think India is: India is a civilization disguised as a nation State. Now, imagine this, an ancient civilization like India, which has its own pride, culture, kingdoms and empires and a rich rich history being continuously invaded for 700 years straight by Turks and Uzbeks because of their need to spread their faith, their desire to eliminate the prevalent culture in the subcontinent and replace it with their own, what would the citizens go through when faced with this? Especially so because the invaders in the name of Islamic conquest succeeded sometimes and formed their own empires on our soil and ruled us. Throughout these 700 years, our Kings fought with them, we won, we lost and at the end of these 700 years, an Indian Empire, The Maratha Empire, rose and finally almost defeated these invaders but at the same time, the British East India Company came to India and once again colonized us. The Marathas lost. We had to bow our heads again and this time for 200 years. We became a wounded civilization with an uncertain future.
When the Brits left, they divided us based on religion, the areas with a majority of Muslims (the result of 700 years of Islamic Conquest) became present-day Pakistan and Bangladesh while areas with a Hindu majority became India. And thus, a third of our original land was lost. Even the land on which our civilization, the Indus Valley Civilization began was lost to us Indians. As for Pakistan, they like to trace their ancestry back to Turks and Uzbeks and completely reject the notion of them being descended from the Indus Valley.
Now, the partition was done, we had got Independence, and we were weak, very weak as Britain had exploited us as much as possible. Our economy was in shambles with no food security, no amenities for citizens, no homes, nothing. We had to rebuild. And we intended to do so. But in 1948, Pakistan declared war on us. Then again in 1965. Then in 1971. And finally in 1999. We also had two wars with China. So, we, who wanted to grow, were instead faced with enemies constantly. We won all the wars we fought with Pakistan. We lost one of the wars we fought with China.
Throughout all these, the voice of Democracy in the world, the US and our past colonial master, the UK supported Pakistan, a military dictatorship instead of us. Especially so in the Indo-Pak war of 1971. And throughout all these, only Russia had our back. So we went with Russia. No Indian citizen hates Russia. Some of us might not support Russia in the war but none of us hate Russia. Communism and Democracy are not even on our minds, we just remember who had our back when we were struggling.
One could even say that in 1971, Russia prevented the collapse of India.
I hope you get the picture now.

@@zuzanareactsit is not the view of everyone. There is a good amount of people that are indifferent.
The major reason was the US and British supporting a Bangladesh genocide of hindus in 1971 while soviet protecting india. That is the biggest emotional symbolism for India and people still love Russians(soviet) due to that. And the US president Nixon held some extremely racist point of view and the US policy thereafter was to supply military equipment to Pakistan.
On the other hand, the government loves Russia because of the unconditional veto in UNSC and Russia recognizing the Indian maps which the rest of the world doesn’t. The arms export is another thing. But Russia lately(since 2000) hasn’t shared much of its tech.

Well, India-Russia relationship actually go a long long way, back to India's independence movement against the imperial Brits. The then Soviet Union supported India's independence movement and Indian freedom fighters even got weapons and other supplies from the Soviet Union to stage up an armed rebellion against the British. Indian freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Sardar Udham Singh got the help of the Soviets in their fight against British imperialism. After our independence, India-Russia relationship didn't prosper until Nikita Khruschev came into power. The Russians helped us to build heavy industries and boost our economy. They gave us weapons to defend ourselves from China and Pakistan when the West, especially the US, refused to give weapons to India. The Soviet Union defended us in 1971 and you'll be surprised to know that the US had actually planned to nuke India in 1971 because they were supporting a terrorist sponsoring country like pakistan. Also, then US President Nixon and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger were highly critical of India and were also highly racist towards Indians. Nixon publicly called our then PM Indira Gandhi (who's known as the Iron Lady of India) a b*tch. We Indians haven't and can't forget these things. Indian films and music are highly prevalent in Russia till now and Russians have a very favorable view of Indians. All these factors count into the present India-Russia Special Strategic Partnership

We have huge population with lots of different ethnicity, keeping it together is more challenging than becoming part of some alliance. and supporting someone in conflicts is never been our cup of tea. India only makes groups if it is about economy, fighting terrorist and for global issue.
But in this condition it was NATO who expand its border first Russia attacking Georgia and Ukraine comes second. If they talk about the life of people than westerners had killed and destroyed much more than Russia.

To put it simply, considering all the geopolitics, India has become that girl in the town, that everyone wants to impress on and take her to their side of the game. But she's seen to be cleverly playing the game to its own greatest interest by engaging with all the players on both the sides. About the Indo-Russia partnership, i think its built on MUTUAL TRUST, akin to the Indo-US partnership which is built on MUTUAL BENEFITS. So by that, I can say that relationships based on trust are more deeper and profound than those based on benefits.

True. America is a full fledged man-eater croc in the river which keeps the red-faced Orangutans and the green-faced Neanderthals from crossing the river and into our homes while Russia is our dear old friend, who though lives quite far away from where we live but on the same side as us and desperately wants the river to be croc free. But Russia still understands our need to have a man-eater croc in the river. That's the real story between Bharat and Russia.

China, the USA, the EU, and India would be the four geo-strategic, geo-political, and geo-economic poles of the World. India is manoeuvring into its place. India needs to rise peacefully. It's all about the people-to-people connection Between Russians and Indians, You can see this same bond with India and Afghanistan and also with India and Africa. Even though they are not our huge trading partner. Sometime Geopolitics works in favor of People-centric. Yet west always fears us that we'll reach our golden period like we hold 25% of world gdp 260 years ago that's why they always see us as threat and try to restrain our growth economically and militarily. West doesn't believe in competing, they believe in stopping the other parties from growth. Therefore Russia and India hold strong bonds not only on government level, it's on people to people level because we both believe in growing together.

Many indians sitting on big places helped brits rule this country for 200 years which is impossible with such a small force. Most of the British force was indian at that time so stalin calling them dogs of imperialism wasn't wrong 🙌

Soviet helped us unconditionally, and therefore you will see unconditional love for Russia, in indians. I am not saying its a right thing to do, i am just stating whats the fact. @@zuzanareacts US chose Pakistan at that time for their support in raising the Mujahideen (terrorist) in Afghanistan, US armed the terrorist organisation in Afghanistan to fight the soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Pakistan helped them by providing manpower and support to terrorists in Afghanistan and in return US would shower Pakistan with billions of dollars and weapons and btw Pakistan has always been under military dictatorship most of the time so they used these resources which they got from the US to terrorise India. Pak made those terrorist to attack India, they did everything wars, hijackings, attack on parliament, mumbai attacks and killing innocent civilians and all this time US remained silent because of its own self interest. US did not speak even during the development of nuclear weapons by Pakistan. Whenever India would ask for defensive weapons US would always deny that and instead support Pakistan. US learned its lesson with the 9/11 attacks but that was too late and later they found Osama bin laden hiding near military installations in Pakistan thereby seeing the true face of Pakistan and realising that they were double played. After that US started relations with India. All this time until recently India has no other support except Russia. Europe was fiery of relations with India because of the compulsion of US which lead to the European hesitation for India which still continues. Many in the European world still view India as dirty and backward.

India is nobody's ally not Russia nor USA. The world "Ally" is a western term and doesn't apply to nations like India that is surrounded by two hostile nuclear nations that has started wars with India. What India like to call is Strategic Partners because India do not want to get into pacts. India wants a multipolar world not a bipolar world. However, as you see how USA has put red carpet to Modi during his visit, we will see a rapid progress in the relationship with USA. This decade is the decade of new India-US partnership thanks to China and the rapid growth of India in South Asia which is the only country that has fought against China militarily and continue doing so in the region.
